Pete Carroll pleased with Christine Michael’s “very good first game”

It’s a little silly to talk about who’s leading the league in rushing after a grand total of seven preseason games have been played. But I’m in a silly mood, so I’ll go ahead and point out that Seahawks rookie Christine Michael is currently the NFL’s rushing leader.

With 16 carries for 89 yards in his preseason debut against the Chargers, Michael impressed Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who said he liked the mix of tough running and breakaway speed that Michael showed off.

“He bounced the ball well outside on his long run – had a couple of nice runs,” Carroll said, via the News Tribune. “He’s got a long way to go, but he ran hard, looked quick and made some guys miss. So I think it’s a very good first game for him.”

A second-round draft pick, Michael isn’t competing for a starting job, as that job belongs to Marshawn Lynch. But Michael, who can also return kickoffs, is making a case that he deserves to get the ball in his hands often when the season starts.

    That’s a girl’s name!

  2. nathpz says: Aug 9, 2013 6:15 PM

Michael can really run the ball, as long as he can stay healthy. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Seahawks drafted him to turn him into a long-term starter once Lynch wore down.

Christine’s just breaking down gender stereotypes about names and breaking ankles.

  4. pathsovglory says: Aug 9, 2013 6:23 PM

his name wont be funny anymore once he trucks your favorite linebacker for the touchdown

  5. hrmlss says: Aug 9, 2013 6:23 PM

Just like Christine Ponder in Minnesota, who throws like a girl.

  6. deepseabreeze says: Aug 9, 2013 6:24 PM

wonder how long before he gets busted for roids

  7. hatesycophants says: Aug 9, 2013 6:25 PM

The dude’s name is Christine? Why?

  8. nathpz says: Aug 9, 2013 6:29 PM

To be fair, *Michael* is a boy’s name.

  9. schmitty2 says: Aug 9, 2013 6:30 PM

Just a suggestion but how about shortening your first name to Chris?

  10. nflpoker says: Aug 9, 2013 6:34 PM

His name is Christine, huh? I bet his sister’s name is Ralph. He better be careful when he is in the shower.

  11. denverwally says: Aug 9, 2013 6:36 PM

It’s small steps. first you have girl’s names in the league, then you have actual girls refereeing, and then female players… I predict by 2099.

  12. fanfrommontreal says: Aug 9, 2013 6:37 PM

I refuse to make fun of someone’s name, but what on earth was his parents thinking? It must have been tough in the school yard…

  13. lance19 says: Aug 9, 2013 6:38 PM

    Hey, Gene Simmons,
who rushed for how many yards?

    “Christine 16!”

  14. dennisatunity says: Aug 9, 2013 6:38 PM

This guy has an exceptional game for a brand new running back, and all some of you can do is make fun of his name? What sad little people you are.

  15. pem34 says: Aug 9, 2013 6:38 PM

Is it bad that i just assumed he was talking about the female ref?

  16. footballbat says: Aug 9, 2013 6:38 PM

This guy has been living with these cracks about his name his whole life. Might be new to you, it ain;t new to him. Probably made him a tough SOB.

Ever hear that Johnny Cash song about a boy named Sue? His dad did it to him just to make him tough.

  17. lance19 says: Aug 9, 2013 6:38 PM

Doh! I meant how many carries? :p

  18. thegreatgabbert says: Aug 9, 2013 6:39 PM

Christine was running over people like a car possessed.

  19. tooz72 says: Aug 9, 2013 6:41 PM

Seachickens are the new Chargers of a few years ago, they’ll have some good years and never win anything that matters

  20. mathomp3 says: Aug 9, 2013 6:48 PM

He looked like he was about to break a big run every time he was handed the ball. Definitely an explosive runner. With more experience I think he will do a better job of finding the holes and should be a solid #2 behind Lynch and eventually could be the top guy.

  21. sweetnlow44 says: Aug 9, 2013 6:56 PM

This guy looked good. Real good. It’ll be tough to find enough touches for all 3 of Seattle’s backs. Lynch is the obvious starter, but Turbin and Michael are too talented to not give some touches to. Good problem to have, I guess.

  22. competitivecompetitioncompeter says: Aug 9, 2013 6:59 PM

Michael looked really really good. He needs to be more patient in the zone blocking scheme, but what do you expect from a rook. Some of his best runs were where he broke tackles in the backfield, dude is possessed of a wicked spin move.

And he’s behind Turbin on the depth chart, currently our #2 3rd down back, how’s that for depth? Seattle is gonna have a lot of guys north of 53 who wind up on other teams’ opening day rosters.

  23. badguy711 says: Aug 9, 2013 7:05 PM

Yes, the Seahawks draft players with girl’s names (Christine Michael) as opposed to the Niners who draft players who play like girls (AJ Jenkins)

  24. darthvoter says: Aug 9, 2013 7:07 PM

I’ll bet this dude is as tough as nails having grown up with that first name. He’s a talent. You draft Lynch in your fantasy league, you best get him as a handcuff, especially in keeper leagus!

  25. jonkchar says: Aug 9, 2013 7:09 PM

    good comments, guys.

  26. bigassbiscuit says: Aug 9, 2013 7:15 PM

    Adderall.

  27. northstarnic says: Aug 9, 2013 7:23 PM

His name is Christine?! Sheesh, that musta been tough

  28. sportnorcal says: Aug 9, 2013 7:24 PM

I wish the Niners could play the Seahawks every other week. It’s quickly grown into a great rivalry – and both teams look stacked again this season. The Rams look to be up and coming, too. It’s great to see the NFC West competitive again.

  29. nflpoker says: Aug 9, 2013 7:34 PM

The parents probably didn’t plan him. So what is one of the nastiest things you can do with the kid? Give him a name where it necessary for him to learn how to fight.

  30. kingdm8 says: Aug 9, 2013 7:38 PM

I wonder if he’s Johnny Cash’s long last black son.

  32. decon49 says: Aug 9, 2013 7:41 PM

    It was against 3rd stringers

  33. trollingforjustice says: Aug 9, 2013 7:43 PM

Ill bet his dads name is Shirley…..

  34. kuantan97 says: Aug 9, 2013 8:09 PM

After reading the headline I honestly thought it was a gal trying to become the first NFL woman kicker.

  35. hawkstradamus says: Aug 9, 2013 8:11 PM

He put a suck spun move on the chargers first unit defense. That being said it was the chargers first unit defense, but still the kids got moves.

  36. secretomen00 says: Aug 9, 2013 8:16 PM

i clicked on the link to see if his name was a typo. guess not. wow. more power to him.

  37. hatesycophants says: Aug 9, 2013 8:24 PM

Give me a break. It’s not as if his name is Francis or Carroll or Merrill. Those are legitimate male names. His name is Christine. There is a male variation for Christine. No excuse. Again, why?

  38. jessejames182 says: Aug 9, 2013 8:40 PM

    Gig’em Christine!

  39. threefeetaway says: Aug 9, 2013 8:43 PM

Not that this makes it any less feminine, however it’s pronounced like “Kristen”

  40. jayhawk777 says: Aug 9, 2013 8:50 PM

It’s pronounced “Crys” “10” asin it’s crys10 clear that he’s dang good and would start for more than “10” teams.

Hawks have do much depth it’s not fair to the redt of NFL teams. Whiners have zero depth and eill pick up our scraps.

    Book it!

    Go “crys” “10” !

  41. sportnorcal says: Aug 9, 2013 9:31 PM

Rivalries are great, and I understand hating the other team. But then there are the idiots who not only show their age, but their complete lack of football IQ while trying to sound smart:

“Whiners have zero depth and eill pick up our scraps.”

  42. beastmode5150 says: Aug 9, 2013 9:55 PM

All of you basement dwellers talking crap, would you say it to his face? Who cares what his name is, grow up, he’s a talented guy that has a good head on his shoulders.

    42-13

  43. beastmode5150 says: Aug 9, 2013 9:57 PM

Plus Pete calls him “Christian” for some reason so….umm, yeah, take that.

  44. lanzurrah says: Aug 9, 2013 10:04 PM

He had 4 carries for 15 yards against the SD 1st and 2nd stringers. (Chargers D starters only played 2 series). Wow…3.75 YPC. Domination!

  45. sjninerspicer says: Aug 10, 2013 12:21 AM

Yes, Christine had some good runs. But remember this is preseason and it was against the Chargers 3rd string defense.

  46. themackstrong says: Aug 10, 2013 12:35 AM

Maybe his dad was a Johnny Cash fan. Yup I thought he looked good but was impatient at times. Turbin last year would burst and crash into his offensive line before the hole would develop. Zone blocking in NFL takes time for young backs to see get a feel for it but man what a gifted athlete Michael is…I kept reading that its hard to take your eyes of of him in practice and wow did that translated to the field even if it was pre-season. Lets hope he health issues are behind him because in a few years Lynch will pass the torch. Schneider being a step ahead of the game thanks to his time in Green Bay. Another young rookie Seahawk fans should watch out for T Alvin Bailey.

49ers are so good…..at being stupid!

Lets talk about who’s who since the Seahawks joined the NFC West. Oh, you want to talk about decades ago. Can’t deal with reality, Cant stand the fact that the Rams actually won a Super bowl since then and the Niners have 2? 2 Division Championships since. Seahawks…..lost count. Smoke and mirrors (YOUR COACH) couldn’t take the most talented team “last” year to a championship..again!!
Adderall? Actully only two Seahawks test positive…2 players who came to seattle tested positive on other teams. Oh and the 49ers are clean?….that’s a bigger joke than your leader..smirk leader….that’s funny. Leader takes people to the top so I’m sorry to call something he isn’t.
Week 2 cant get here fast enough..get your squaking in now you fools.

  48. trippymane says: Aug 10, 2013 2:52 AM

You guys are all idiots how is (chris-tin) a girls name?! It’s not pronounced (chris-steene)

  49. rrthomasxyz says: Aug 10, 2013 3:04 AM

Pronounced Chris-ten and spelled Christine. Those of you who dwell on the gender related issues of the name are similar to those who would discriminate using other non-sequetor reasons like race, sexual preference, or religion.
    The guy’s good.

  50. hendeeze says: Aug 10, 2013 4:02 AM

Of the 89 yards, 66 were gained in the 2nd half. When the future Walmart scrub employees were playing. Give me a freakin break.

I’m going to guess you probably just hit puberty. Sadly this is the typical mentality if a Seahawk fan. Unreal.

Congrats on your domination of division championships when the NFC west was one of the worst on football. That’s something to brag about. What a loser.
