Jim Irsay apologizes for Colts’ play in preseason opener

Jim-Irsay-Getty Getty Images

We can agree that wins and losses don’t matter in the preseason.

We can also agree that it’s never a good idea to anger the boss.

Colts owner Jim Irsay took to Twitter on Monday to apologize for his club’s play in a 44-20 loss to Buffalo in the preseason opener on Sunday afternoon.

In defeat, the Colts were outgained 451-288 and surrendered two return touchdowns to Buffalo.

“My commanders got n earful from me!” wrote Irsay, who used some unvarnished language to describe the club’s play.

The Colts’ next preseason game is Sunday at the Giants, and it will be interesting to see if Indianapolis is a little sharper in its return to the field.

    What a buffoon.

Okay to appologize the year Peyton went down and you had no credible backup and the team sucked because that’s on you

But appologize for a practice game. R u freakin kidding. This guy is whacked. Practice? We talkin practice? Not a game. Practice?

Hey Irsay, stay of the sauce who cares about preseason.

I used to be a huge Irsay fan and am still a fan albeit a smaller one. If he doesn’t keep his pie hole closed he’s gonna be as annoying if not more so than Jerry Jones is. And that’s not a good thing. His job is too open his checkbook and let the people who know football run things. Him constantly piping off like this on Twitter is putting unnecessary stress on his coaches and players and it’s something they don’t need right now.

With Andrew Luck or not, they’re still rebuilding and won’t be winning the big one for a few years at least. They are definitely headed down the right path, but he needs to give it time.

I don’t think a team thats won the Superbowl in recent memory has gone undefeated in the preseason. This is the time the Colts should be doing everything and anything to take a look at guys, not trying to play to win. If they win then it’s a bonus, but scout the talent on your team first and foremost.

  7. dioalice says: Aug 12, 2013 2:44 PM

The Colts played, as Jimmy stated, “like crap.”

Yet, it’s preseason game number 1. Anyone in the stands at Lucas Oil Stadium expecting to see the starters playing up to expectation yesterday should be considered delusional.

While it is his team, Jimmy should sit back, write the checks and let the “commanders” and their troops do their jobs.

  8. cletusvandam says: Aug 12, 2013 2:46 PM

If he really wants to apologize he can pay for his own crappy stadium.

  9. tonyugoh says: Aug 12, 2013 2:48 PM

He spent a lot of money to upgrade the team’s weaknesses and has said he expects the defense and special teams to be better this season. If yesterday was an indication of how those units will play this year, then he has every right to be worried. And to those of you complaining about how he meddles and talked too much, remind me what the Colts’ record has been in the past decade and remind me of any player holding out or criticizing the organization in that time.

I actually don’t have a problem with this. As a matter of fact, I applaud him for doing this. How many times have we said, ‘It’s only pre-season’ then 3 months later, ‘Wait ’til next year’?
I don’t understand where the criticism is coming from or why.
Maybe those of you leveling criticism or making the snarky comments have nothing to improve on (doubt it) but that doesn’t mean no one else doesn’t.

  18. jacktheraven says: Aug 12, 2013 3:11 PM

  19. trippymane says: Aug 12, 2013 3:13 PM

For the people saying it’s not about the wins it’s about evaluating your talent? Well if they lose 44-20 it most likely means they’re talent didn’t play that good which is what actually matters Smh. Idiots

The game was close til our 3rdteam stringers went with.their 1st stringers, most guys who played into the 3rd qtr wont make the team..nothing to see here folks, carry on

  21. chc4 says: Aug 12, 2013 3:14 PM

What is the possible upside of an owner being on twitter? They should be above the fray. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I cringe every time an owner or even GM gets involved in this stuff. It’s immature and totally unnecessary.

  22. andersong0857 says: Aug 12, 2013 3:16 PM

You guys are all idiots !!! Although Preseason does not always tell you how good team is in regular season. there is alot to be learned that is absolutely essential. The saying how hard you do in practice will carry over how you play in a game still is true. There also is 90 players with only 53 spots open to make the team. So its a superbowl every preseason game for those wanting to make the 53 man roster. Lastly all this trash talking about Jim Irsay is hilarious. You only could dream of a owner that acually cared just as much for his team as the fans that support him that he would say such a thing to his true fans. He is a true dream owner and as a Colts fan I salute him as one of the best owners in the NFL.

  23. eatitfanboy says: Aug 12, 2013 3:19 PM

The polite fiction that everyone subscribed to last year was that Pagano was still “leading” the team despite the fact that Arians was coaching it.

I bought into it, although somewhat dubiously, wearing my ChuckStrong T-Shirt because I love Cancer Cure causes while in the back of my mind always kind of sort of feeling that Arians was more qualified to be a HC than Pagano.

The Colts were in an unwinnable position. They couldn’t admit that they preferred Arians stay in the top job, and now they get to watch him turn the Cardinals into a wild card contender in what is all of the sudden the best division in football.

I wish Pagano the best, and am deliriously happy that he beat cancer. I’m just not sure this is going to have the story book ending on the field that Colt fans are hoping for.

  24. swagger52 says: Aug 12, 2013 3:19 PM

It would be nice if the rest of the NFL believes the same thing about Irsay as Baltimore does. Give us back our records. How many Indianapolis Colt parties were thrown for Artie Donovan last weekend?
Exactly…Put that in your pipe and tweet it.

Ya be critical all you want ladies. We got the next peyton manning with Andrew Luck and greatest owner to make sure its rebuilt right. He has biggest heart and passion to do whatever it takes to make sure it happens. Unlike some owners its about money with Jim Irsay its all about winning no matter what the cost. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it lol. Leadership starts at the top and works its way down to the rest of the team. We got great owner, GM and coach. so the rest will come.

  31. benacci says: Aug 12, 2013 3:42 PM

I would say that the First team run blocking was terrible and special teams was not covering the lanes. Those were what the offseason problems that were to be solved, and Irsay has a right to be upset.

  32. sarcasm says: Aug 12, 2013 3:42 PM

  53. mrfrostyj says: Aug 12, 2013 7:23 PM

Obviously some of the commenters have never attended a Colts game. The fans here are notoriously fair whether. On top of that the ones who aren’t fair whether are worried that the wrong coach is running the team. The Colts didn’t look too great last season till Arians took over and that game didn’t ease anyones mind on Pagano’s coaching ability.

Don’t forget, pre season game 3 is against the Browns. Bernie Kosar WILL hurt Jim Irsays feelings if they cotinue to play bad.

  54. keepyerstickontheice says: Aug 12, 2013 7:47 PM

Yep. it’s all fun’n’games until you lose to the Bills and their two rookie quarterbacks. Then it’s deep into the hooch and bitter Tweets.

So, are the Bills that good, or are the Colts that bad?

Neither. They’ll probably finish with the same record.

  55. bartmuley says: Aug 12, 2013 10:55 PM

Irsay doesn’t like the way his team played in a preseason game?

Hey Jim….remember in 2009 when the Colts were 14-0 and on their way to an undefeated regular season?

Remember how you and Polian took out Manning and the starters and tanked the last two games?

So save it. Preseason games are meaningless and you’ve already demonstrated that you don’t care about winning in the regular season.

I was embarrassed by the Colts play against the Bills too….in 2009.

  56. bartmuley says: Aug 12, 2013 10:59 PM

Mr Frosty Colts fans aren’t “fair weather”. Give me a break. This isn’t 1990 when half of Indianapolis were still Bears fans.

The Colts have sold out every home game for over a decade. Really “fair weather”….huh?

And I’ve been to plenty of Colts games.

  57. bartmuley says: Aug 12, 2013 11:08 PM

All you knocking Irsay are clueless.

The guy says some dumb stuff on Twitter but almost everything said on Twitter is dumb.

The guy’s record as an owner speaks for itself. Since he took over the Colts they have made the playoffs most years….they have 2 certain HOFers, probably 3 HOFers in the last decade. They’ve been to two SBs and won one.

Since Irsay took over they have one of the best W-L records in the league.

They rebounded from a 2-14 season to go 11-5 with one of the youngest teams in the league.

    Those are all facts.

The guy can say whatever stupid crap he wants, he’s earned it.

You want a crazy horrible owner? Look at AL Davis’s last 10 years. Or Jerry Jones.

You want horrible owners? Look at the Cardinals. Or the Lions. Or the Bengals. Or the Browns.

Anyone who calls Irsay a bad owner is a fool.

  58. taosravenfan says: Aug 13, 2013 1:55 AM

Te apple does not fall far from the tree. His old man was a bad person and frankly he is not much better. We may have lost football hot 13 years but the trade up in the quality of the owner from thr irsay’s who are in the bottom of the league to Steve B. who is one of the most respected in the league almost, just almost made it worth losing the uniforms.

  59. cmgww says: Aug 13, 2013 9:20 AM

First… Stop with the “drunk idiot” crap. His dad was a drunk, Jim had his addiction issues but has been clean now for over a decade. And the Jerry Jones comparisons? Are you joking?? Irsay has been a great owner. He hired Polian and let him do his thing. When that went south and it was clear Polian had lost it, he cleaned house and hired another GM. I wish he would dial back on the Tweets, but he is no Jerry Jones. Only missing the playoffs twice since 2000 should tell you he is doing something right. Outside of NE, who can claim that run of success?

  60. taosravenfan says: Aug 13, 2013 11:24 AM

The only reason he missed the playoffs twice since 2000 had zero to do with him and everything to do with being in the position to draft Peyton manning. The fact that they had Peyton and could only win one SB is an indictment on the front office and ownership

Selling out the second smallest stadium in the NFL and having fans actually show up to the games are two different situations all together. Keep in mind this same Jim Irsay had to threaten fans in Indy as recent as last season that if they didn’t start showing up he would voluntarily black out games and practically had to threaten to move the team to get the stadium in the first place.

Indy is not a football town whatsoever and it’s embarrassing having to explain to the away teams fans (the ones who are buying most of the tickets) why the fans in the blue jerseys leave at halftime if they’re loosing and in the 3rd quarter if they’re winning.
