Saints continue to look for receiving help

The Saints continue to look high and low for some help at wide receiver.

According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints have added former Cowboys and Chargers wideout Patrick Crayton, who was at practice this morning.

This was after they brought in veteran Steve Breaston when they lost Joe Morgan for the year with a torn ACL.

Starters Marques Colston and Lance Moore are intact, and having a fleet of complementary backs and tight end Jimmy Graham mitigates the panic.

But dragging in veterans might also indicate that they’re not quite ready to trust either Kenny Stills or Nick Toon with a bigger role.

…or he just could be a camp body? He has no shot of making this team.

  2. I tell you, you people in the media either don’t know what you’re talking about or you’re just trying to stir up something just to stir up something. The Saints aren’t desperate for WRs, like you make it out to be. The Saints usually keep 6 WRs. For sure they will keep Colston, Moore, Toon, Stills, and Roby. They have Parker and Tanner who have been doing extremely well in camp. The Saints will be cutting some WRs that would make virtually every other team in the NFL. Cutting an unrestricted free agent in Brian Leonard, who by all accounts was having trouble remembering where to line up, and bringing in a veteran WR in Crayton isn’t the desperate move you guys make it out to be. Heaven forbid Sean Payton wants players who know what to do. You’re making a mountain out of a mole hill.

  3. Drew Brees with Patrick Crayton and Steve Breaston would be better than Matt Ryan with Julio Jones and Roddy White in the second half of a playoff game.

  4. Sounds like Payton doing one of his old players a favor.

Toon is a lock for the #3 spot right now and Stills will be on the roster because he’d never make it through waivers. That leaves two WR spots open with Breaston, Roby, Tanner, Hakim, Parker and Crayton fighting for it. Pretty good competition.

  5. Every WR the Saints cut this year will be better than Meachum… Brees made Meachum… In fact, Meachum should thank Brees for all of the guaranteed salary the Chargers are on the hook for..

  6. I thought Toon looked pretty good against the Chiefs, Stills had his ups and downs, and Andy Tanner looked pretty reliable…Saints will be fine at wideout…

  7. If you are a real Saints fan you know that it doesn’t matter what WR’s we have on the field! Brees will make them look good even if they are not! He has showed it time after time that any WR out on the field with Brees is instantly average or better than average and that’s all we need out of a 3rd string WR! WHO DAT!
