The Chiefs got a scare on Monday when running back Jamaal Charles needed to be carted off the field at practice after an injury, but it looks like serious injury was averted.
According to several reporters who were in attendance at Chiefs practice, coach Andy Reid said that x-rays on Charles’ foot were negative. There’s no word about other tests that might be performed to assess the extent of the injury, which Reid referred to as a strain, nor was there any discussion of a timetable for a return to action.
Should there be no further negative developments upon further evaluation, it doesn’t sound like the kind of injury that will keep Charles out of the lineup for an extended period. Whether that means that he’s well enough to play in this week’s preseason game remains to be seen, although caution will almost certainly be exercised with a player whose ability to make plays in the open field will be one of the focal points of the team’s offense this season.
