Rex Ryan yet to name starting QB for Saturday

Geno Smith, Mark Sanchez AP

We’ll have to wait on news of the Jets’ starting quarterback for Saturday’s game vs. Jacksonville.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Jets coach Rex Ryan indicated Tuesday that he’s yet to pick a starter for the club’s second preseason game.

Mark Sanchez started the club’s preseason opener at Detroit, completing 10-of-13 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. However, he was intercepted on a screen pass by Lions rookie defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, who returned it for a score.

Rookie Geno Smith, competing with Sanchez for the starting job, completed 6-of-7 passes for 45 yards at Detroit. He suffered a minor ankle injury in the 26-17 loss to the Lions, but he’s played through it this week.

According to Mehta, Ryan indicated Tuesday that Smith’s health is a “factor” in the decision on who starts Saturday.

Hasn’t Geno Smith been taking most of the first team reps? Doesn’t that pretty much say it all?

Does it really matter who starts for the Jets?

If this was a regular season game, it could determine the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Isn’t Mornhinweg a west coast offense guy. If they are going with Geno, don’t they have a lot of work to do,him being a shotgun guy?

  4. disturbedshifty says: Aug 13, 2013 2:07 PM

That’s because he hasn’t been watching the offense.

Smith is probably checking daily to see if Rex Ryan’s tattoo has a new jersey on.

I have a really bad feeling its going to be Sanchez, unless John Idzik actually has a huge say in who plays..

PFT should imbed audio of a drumroll into this article until the announcement is made.

Heard rumors from various unnamed sources that Mr. Johnson has offered Rex Ryan a four year contract extension.

Besides that awful pick-6, Sanchez looked like a decent QB in Mornhinweg’s offense this past preseason game. I had never seen him perform on a drive as well as his last one (5/5, 78 yards, TD). As much as I’ve hated Sanchez, I’d like to see what he can do in a non-Sparano/Schottenheimer system.

zimaman knows as much about football as Zima knows how to make good beer. If the Jets were so terrible then why would you give them 4 wins? Looks pretty odd that you have to go out of your way to comment on a Jets thread ripping them apart and then giving them 4 wins. Go have another malt beverage girly man. Dont you have some tennis to watch?

Seriously, would you rather see the Jets fail than your Pats succeed? I 100% believe it’s the former in your case.
Have you ever made an effort to seek professional help for this obsessive behavior? It is very counterproductive.

By the way, don’t you think your Dolphins should win at least one playoff game before you rant?

    @multiplemiggs

These trolls claim they don’t care, yet take time , effort and their maximum brain power to repeat the same crap over and over daily.

Everybody is drawn to the Jets. They don’t realize they are mesmerized!

The biggest problem about Sanchez throwing that pick six isn’t that it was a particularly crippling mistake, and his recovery from it isn’t all that important either. What is most important is that Sanchez continues to make the same rookie mistakes in practice, preseason and “meaningful” games. The guy has hit his ceiling.

That said, he’s still going to be the starter. Rex is sticking to his guns and going with the devil he knows. It makes little to no sense to waste the guy you think is going to be the future on a season where there is very little chance of success. Rather than let losing get into his head, save him on the bench, prep him and teach him, and when Marty Mornhinweg takes over as head coach rebuild with him as a centerpiece.

“Everybody is drawn to the Jets. They don’t realize they are mesmerized!”

Same concept as when passing by a car accident.
