Steelers place Burress on IR, sign another receiver

Burress AP

As expected, the Steelers have placed veteran receiver Plaxico Burress on injured reserve, a day after he underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.

They replaced Burress on the roster with Tyler Shaw, an undrafted rookie from Northwest Missouri State who was cut by the Cardinals on August 6.

The next question is whether Burress, who turned 36 on Monday, will be back in 2014.  At this point, it seems unlikely.

Can the Steelers PLEASE stop signing former Arizona Cardinals?! We never wanted Willie Gay back yet he was SMOKED by Cruz on Saturday so badly my 9 year old sitting beside me was able to see how badly he was beaten when the ball was in the air!!! On a side note, Larod Stephens-Howling was fantastic but he doesn’t count cause the Cards didn’t cut or trade him.

Big moment for Tyler Shaw and I hope he saves this page. It will be the only time his name is ever mentioned on this site except for maybe when he’s cut or gets arrested.

This is the first (out of 100’s) comment I have seen a Raven fan like you hit it on the money with your comment! Don’t be so jealous. LOL

They might as well start engraving Lombardi #7 for the Stealers. Gotta appreciate the optimism of their loyal fans though. Even when they have a Bloated immobile QB., an porous O line, and a defense minus young stars, they still believe they will be challenging for a title. In reality they are the least talented team in their own division, and will dwell in the basement of the Afc North for the next decade.

Report comment. I guess when you head is so far up your — you may miss such a gem. Again preseason moves are like your frequent trolling posts…..worthless.

Love the comments from the jealous Steeler haters, desperate to put some meaning into this signing. Here is a clue: He was an undrafted rookie. In other words, he is training camp fodder, last on the depth chart and won’t make the team.

Honestly, it is probably better that one of the young receivers get that 5th spot. Tyler Shaw is a camp body and more than likely will not even make the practice squad. (which is why he was referred to as “another receiver” in the title) Justin Brown has probably just been handed the #5 receiver spot – now let’s see what he can do with it. I like Brown over Gilreath so far.

  15. ziggy26 says: Aug 13, 2013 4:24 PM

The Steelers are more than happy with their Top 4 receivers – Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, Jerricho Cotchery, and Markus Wheaton. Those guys will be productive this season.

They need a fifth WR, which for this team has traditionally been a player who contributes in some way on special teams. Shaw’s likely fighting for a practice squad spot at best, but more than likely finding a place to showcase his ability for other teams.

As for William Gay getting burned by Victor Cruz – It was Cover 2, meaning he was expecting safety help over the top, so his assignment was to trail the receiver. Ryan Clark was the guy out of position, not Gay.

The Ravens fans sure make these garbage articles worth reading even tho I feel I lose more brain cells reading the back and forth ignorance, but even after winning a Super Bowl Ravens fans are obsessed with Steelers its almost comical its self. That being said these teams are like day and night( yellow.. day purple.. night) From top to bottom these are in the upper echelon of NFL organizations and that alone means to me these teams will always make sure they are competitive in todays NFL

Dude, do you really think anyone takes what you say more seriously than an ant carrying a leaf? At least the ant is carrying triple his weight for his community….you not so much. I guess your assessment is just based on last years results not years of experience watching the NFL.
The steelers this year will be lucky to be 8-8, but saying that means with breaks, health, and raven luck they could be 9-7.

    Ravens fans:

Wow…its preseason. Who knows what will happen in the regular season. Your Ravens could end up third in the division if the ball bounces the other way.

I mean, Flacco COULD suffer an injury or Rice COULD suffer an injury…who knows? I’m actually curious to see how the Ravens would do in that situation…if it were to happen.

    GO STEELERS!!

  38. celty00 says: Aug 13, 2013 7:34 PM

OK, just curious as I didn’t hear how Plax got hurt. Was he struggling to get his gun out of his pants again and hurt his shoulder??? Good to know he kept the safety on this time around it could of been a lot worse.

  39. ftcsubs says: Aug 13, 2013 7:54 PM

These games seem to matter alot to Ozzie Newsome. He saw enough in one quarter to make him go out and grab to Shady Rest receivers. That joke is the gift that “keeps on giving”.

I tried to tell him and you that your WRs were garbage back in April. LOL

And if they bomb again Thursday night, he’ll go out and get T.O. or Ocho. That will send this MB into a state of delirium from all the laughter.

It took Ozzie 1 qtr Scoobydoo. One qtr… hahahaha

  45. tombstoned says: Aug 13, 2013 10:23 PM

This is what it looks like when a football team circles the drain. Hope Big Ben can do it all by himself. Oh wait… He already proved last year that he can’t. Good luck not finishing last in the division this year.

  46. matteyghoukis says: Aug 13, 2013 11:33 PM

I don’t think it’s a big deal who the receiver is. Dan Roomey is back and is going back to basics, meaning were gonna be a running team with a good defense.

It’s the smartest strategy as we have a Great quarterback so instead of relying on that like we have been. We only need guys at receiver that are serviceable. If we can’t run and play good defense it dont matter if we have Megatron and Julio Jones cause we’ll lose games by like 35-31 so what good is it at that point…

  47. scoobies05 says: Aug 14, 2013 9:55 AM

once more jb….tell us all what is going to make the steelers good this year. no rbs, no tight ends, aging injured qb, mediocre o line. the ravens can score points. the steelers cant. so keep talking trash about the ravens but we all know the truth. you are scared because you know the truth…steelers will be luck to come close to what they did last year. and you are right…we are weak at receiver…so like a good gm, ozzie is trying to fix it. no one with any sense at all would say ozzie doesnt know what hes doing. your homegrown team missed the playoffs last year. so who really knows what hes doing

  48. udontknowjaq says: Aug 14, 2013 11:27 AM

I like the Steelers Wrs while not tall the top 2 seem to be possession receivers and Sanders seems to get open a lot I can see him being 1 of the top guy in the NFL in 3rd down grabs, Ben was very efficient in that area last season and I just like Antonio as a Steeler I would take him over Mike Wallace any season in just his work ethic alone the 3rd and 4th Will be the rookie or Cotch and if the rookie takes the spot no knock on Cotch IMO Just the Steelers get Gems there Cotch could be the 3rd on many teams in the NFL when healthy

  49. lovefootball4life says: Aug 14, 2013 2:19 PM

jtb thank god Ozzie didn’t listen to you since April. We would have lost our MVP QB, top five RB, DPOY, and countless other “pieces of trash”.

Maybe, just maybe, losing Pitta, and now Dickson past week 1, and Deonte spraining his foot that Ozzie decided to keep the team competitive again this year and pick up targets across the middle where these guys normally play.

You got lucky and you know it. Deep down you wish Steelers did something better than camp fodder after losing Plax.

  50. jtbsteeler says: Aug 14, 2013 2:44 PM

When this “solid” plan that Ozzie came up with this offseason fails and crumbles, I’ll be in here. Join me…

And its yet to be seen whether the Ravens 1st team offense can score. that will have to be proven because right now that’s HIGHLY debatable. You get no benefit of the doubt because Flacco struggle most of last season. And from what I see, he’s set up to fail again. This reminds me of ’08.

The Friday morning headlines on this site will be “Flacco disregards the playbook and goes back to what he likes, Jumpballs to get the offense out of this preseason funk.” Over/under on Flacco Jumpballs is 3. I’ll take the over.

  51. scoobies05 says: Aug 14, 2013 2:44 PM

i am right there lovesfootball. i keep telling jb that good gms see issues and tries to fix them. jb cant accept that his steelers have no proven rbs, tight ends, medicore receivers and an agingin injured qb. the steelers to their credit usually figure it out but jb needs to worry more about his team and their weaknesses

  52. scoobies05 says: Aug 14, 2013 4:06 PM

one more time jb. tell us whats good about your team…the one that just got blown out

  53. vonkaiser2001 says: Aug 14, 2013 9:48 PM

    Ziggy26 says:

As for William Gay getting burned by Victor Cruz – It was Cover 2, meaning he was expecting safety help over the top, so his assignment was to trail the receiver. Ryan Clark was the guy out of position, not Gay.

No defensive assignment in history has ever been for a defensive player to “trail” a receiver. That means he’s been beaten badly. The fact that the safety provided zero support over the top doesn’t change the fact the Gay was outrun so badly into the seam that the easiest pass in football went uncontested.

  54. sbchampsagain says: Aug 15, 2013 10:08 AM

The fact that we even signed Plax in the first place is worrisome.

Please oh please let Heath Miller be ok!

Otherwise we have no one to catch the ball AND a rookie RB…oof.

  55. blackngold4life says: Aug 15, 2013 5:55 PM

Blown out? When did that happen? Giants starters couldnt score inside the 10..No TE? Paulson is better then what u have..No RBs? We got 4 that can run it..You got Rice (The entire Offence)..and Mediocre WRs? what do you call that group you got? Old injured QB? Y’all was ready to cut Joe’s head off Mid season until Rice BAILD him out vs San Diego (and we all know he wasn’t past the 1st down) Ben missd 4 games and still put up Pro Bowl numbers!
