Ndamukong Suh: It’s not all about brute strength anymore

Houston Texans v Detroit Lions Getty Images

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh says he has changed as a player.

Suh, who burst onto the scene as the NFL’s defensive rookie of the year in 2010, says that back then, he was just relying on his physical abilities. Now Suh believes he’s a better player because he has a better mental approach.

“I think without question it’s just growing up,” Suh told the Lions’ website. “Being in the game four years deep now and understanding that it’s not all about brute strength. Really, when I was coming out as a rookie it was just being physical and playing as hard and as fast as possible. Now it’s a combination of the two. Knowing where I can cheat a guy or beat a guy because I see him leaning or doing something different. He thinks I’m doing this because we always do this in a particular play and I can switch it up and still beat a guy.”

Physically, defensive tackles don’t get much more impressive than Suh. If Suh has the mental side of the game down as well, he could be scary.

Mental Game – He will now begin to headbutt Qb’s on the ground

Suh is either really smart or really stupid, its hard to tell

  3. mayorstafford says: Aug 14, 2013 7:16 AM

It’s too bad the national media has raked this guy over the coals for stomping on some clown who untying his shoe and cheap shotting him all game (cuz he was getting schooled)…he is one of the best talents in all of football. I’m glad he’s on my team.
Cue the ignorant posts from people who’ve never really seen him play in 3…2…1…

  4. mustbechris says: Aug 14, 2013 7:19 AM

My favorite “hindsight is 20/20″ thing is all the draft talking heads – particularly Todd McShay – who hedged their bets by emphasizing how Suh and Gerald McCoy were neck-and-neck in terms of skill and potential that year. It’s like saying Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf were neck-and-neck.

  5. ColtsWinColtsWin!! says: Aug 14, 2013 7:23 AM

Yep, the PED’s can only take you so far, you have to learn to control your roid rage as well so that you can stay in the game. :)

  6. beerbratscheese says: Aug 14, 2013 7:24 AM

Does this mean he’s admitting that he’ll be laying off the HGH now?

“it was just being physical and playing as hard and as fast as possible. Now it’s a combination of the two.”

So Suh was physical and playing as hard and fast as possible.

And now, it’s a combination of the 2. So basically, he’s being physical and playing as hard and as fast as possible.

Am I the only one who don’t see the diffrence between now and then?

  8. detroitcityy says: Aug 14, 2013 7:47 AM

    One of the best DT’s

  9. letsgobuffalo4 says: Aug 14, 2013 7:50 AM

Ofcourse when your numbers drop and your team sucks you “figure out” this game haha. And if up til now you have only relied on strength and no mental game……….how do we know you’ll be good? if until now you havent realized the quirks to the game- i doubt you ever will. 7 wins this year with possibly the greatest receiver of all time, what a shame.

  10. concord148 says: Aug 14, 2013 7:55 AM

Ndamukong Suh is scary are you kidding me, you ought to meet my wife. That’s scary.

  11. stewart09 says: Aug 14, 2013 8:06 AM

if he can eliminate those brain explosions he is famous for he could surpass Atkins as the best DT in the NFL and with fairley and Ansah this could become the best D-line in the NFL aswell.

  12. 49erstim says: Aug 14, 2013 8:07 AM

Ndummykong always talks a big game about his mental approach. ……then on gameday he stomps guys and getsflagged. There has never been a ddoubt that the guy is physically gifted, but I’m tired of hearing him TALK about a better mental approach. Time to be about it big fella.

  13. tsizzlehotpiss says: Aug 14, 2013 8:14 AM

Suh is already “scary” because he’s the dirtiest player in the NFL.

@mayorstafford – let’s not forget intentionally kicking Texans QB Matt Schaub in the nuts or the numerous unnecessary roughness penalties Suh has incurred since he entered the league…….

  14. coachbeck says: Aug 14, 2013 8:16 AM

He is the 2nd best DT to Geno Adkins

  15. hawkstradamus says: Aug 14, 2013 8:17 AM

Suh is one of the most impressive football players I have seen in 30 years of watching the game. If he played on a big market team his “issues” would be swept under the rug, announcers would praise his competitive nature and after every other yellow flag they would mention his charity work or the fact that he hasn’t been in trouble with the law.

  16. wingz101 says: Aug 14, 2013 8:23 AM

Suh got a lot of crap last year, but he really did play well. What hurt him and his numbers was the pathetic play at DE and the constant injuries to Corey Williams and Fairley.

He still still drew double and triple teams, he got flagged, what three times? He’s the best player by far on that defense and one of the best DT’s in the league. But like Stafford and CJ on offense, he just needs better players around him.

  17. fofofotey says: Aug 14, 2013 8:27 AM

It’s also about his kicking foot strength.

  18. wryly1 says: Aug 14, 2013 8:38 AM

Going into year 4, this top draft pick is still better know for his bonehead plays than his game-changing plays.

  19. sschmiggles says: Aug 14, 2013 8:39 AM

It’s like saying Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf were neck-and-neck.
    ____________________________

What a joke. McCoy is great player, certainly no Ryan Leaf. I’m sure he’d have more of “teh sakcs” like Suh if he were playing with a DL like Detroit’s instead of one of the worst in the NFL.

But hey, he isn’t as flashy and he isn’t in the news all the time, therefore he must suck.

So Gerald McCoy is a slouch? I kinda remember him making the Pro Bowl and outperforming Suh last year.

  24. iceburgskin202 says: Aug 14, 2013 8:50 AM

If Suh played in the 90s or b4 we would be calling him the second coming of Mean Joe Green. But he plays now and the NFL wants to take away a factor any of us had to play with. Intimidation!!! It will be flag football b4 2030

Is Gerlad McCoy supposed to be Ryan Leaf in this scenario? If so, you;re way off base, and a prime example of how media coverage can skew perception vs reality in terms of a players value (especially defensive players). McCoy has had trouble staying healthy, yes, but has outplayed Suh to date. Talk to whoever you want, go to profootballfocus, they will all agree.

I’d have him on philly roster at any cost except for maybe McCoy. And we’d be much better for it.

  37. irvin12589 says: Aug 14, 2013 9:55 AM

Dude is scary, I have never seen a 300+lb DT that is as lean as he is. He keeps getting a bad rap for his “lack of production” since his rookie year. However he faces a constant double team on almost every play so yea it’s harder to put up 10+ sacks like that. However I believe this year will be huge for the lions D-line. Especially on 3rd down when you have Suh/Farley in the middle and Young/Ansah rushing the outside. God forbid the Lions ever decide to blitz. Cutler/Rogers watch out because those shaky olines are gonna be EXPOSED by the Lions front 7. Now here’s to hoping the secondary does their job

  38. myeaglescantwin says: Aug 14, 2013 10:01 AM

as he continues to over power anyone they throw in front of him.

from day 1 this dude beat up the league..

now that he is 20lbs heavier and unquestionably stronger than anyone in the OL interior,,, he can add the technique to compliment that power..

  42. jbarge says: Aug 14, 2013 10:15 AM

Suh should ask Larry Allen if this game isn’t about strength anymore. Not a coincidence that the strongest man that was ever in the NFL was also the best guard to every play the game.

  43. rukkus1 says: Aug 14, 2013 10:23 AM

Lions fans are worse than Cowgirl fans. Every year they are full of hopes and dreams and every year it gets squashed. You’d figure they would have won a few Superbowls recently, especially with more top 10 picks than any other team in the league.

@mayorstafford, I’m only mentioning this because of your last comment about Suh haters. I know, anyone who doesn’t like Suh means that they have never seen him play. Good analogy. You’re a typical homer Lions fan, nothing wrong with that, but to say that the “Suh Stomp” was justified because he was getting “cheap shots” all game, puts your meat headedness and homerism on full display. This is coming from someone who cheers for the Lions when they play the Packers at least. State your opinion, but leave the que the haters comments to yourself.

  50. filthymcnastysmom says: Aug 14, 2013 11:19 AM

Do you realize how contradictory your statement is?

I don’t agree Suh haters never watch him play, but who the heck are you to dictate what a person can say? You tell him to state his opinion but then tell him what he can’t say.

Some people are so stupid they have no idea.

These same idiots post pictures of Eagles with red, white, and blue colorings on Facebook but then act like we live in a communist country. It’s the mentallity that people “love freedom” but not if it means a different view or opinion is out there. Sorry Sprtsfan1, not saying that’s you, but you sound A LOT like that if you are going to tell ANYONE what they can say.

Make an argument for why what they said is ridiculous. You know, use your brain.

  52. sprtsfan1 says: Aug 14, 2013 12:04 PM

@ Bender: Easy there sir, you’re speaking to someone who puts their life on the line to defend that freedom of speech you so eloquently talk about. I, in no way spoke in a fashion to limit any of his freedoms. I, just as you and mayorstafford, have the right to say what I want as well. When someone says, “que the haters” they automatically put anyone who disagrees with then into the hater category rather than making a rational argument. You sound like an educated person and I agree with you very much in regard to your statement about hypocrisy. If I came off as a hypocrite, that was not my intention, but I can understand how it could be taken that way. I’m just tired of being labeled a hater just because I have a counter-argument.

It’s all about stomping on people, that’s part of football. That’s they way we were all taught from day one of football practice, stomp, kick, punch all the other players. I coach 11-12 years olds now and they know hoiw to stomp and play dirty by the time they get out of flag football at 5 & 6 years old.

  56. lionstigersandwingsohmy says: Aug 14, 2013 12:51 PM

  57. cfeeley52 says: Aug 14, 2013 12:56 PM

  58. q1ller says: Aug 14, 2013 1:14 PM

This guy and James Harrison are so transparent. More than anything, they both want to come across as tough guys… hence Suh drawing attention to his brute strength (there are plenty of examples from both of them).

There are plenty of equally imposing guys in the NFL, but thankfully most don’t need to draw attention to themselves like this. By the way, my team plays the Lions twice a year and I have barely even heard Suh’s name called the past 2 years.

  62. jimmylions says: Aug 15, 2013 1:50 AM

Talk all the trash you want, but when a member of the Lions defensive line hits free agency he has no problem getting offers from around the league. Money talks.

Our D-line is great and will be even better this year. Most analysts say we (easily) have the best pass rushing tandem in the league (Suh/Fairley).

Ask Cliff Avril whether playing alongside Suh helped him get his payday in Seattle. Don’t be shocked when Ziggy Ansah terrorizes quarterbacks this year.

I’m glad Suh is a Lion and I know every other team in the NFL wished he played for them.

  63. lionsyooper says: Aug 20, 2013 5:54 AM

This is ridiculous. Can you any of you fans of other teams honestly say you wouldn’t want the best tackle in the NFL on your team? Because, that is what Suh is. He is double teamed EVERY PLAY, and still wreaks havoc. Hopefully Fairley can loosen that up a bit this season. And YES, he is stronger than the guys you are referring to. He didn’t have to compete at the combine to be a top pick but still did for fun and blew the competition away, because he is COMPETITIVE. If you want a guy that doesn’t care what happens on the field, shakes hands with his enemies, and has no competitive nature then you can have him. I will take gladiator that is out for blood!
