Mark Sanchez will start for Jets on Saturday

AP

For at least another week, Mark Sanchez is the starting quarterback of the New York Jets.

The team announced on Thursday morning that Sanchez will start in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Jaguars. Sanchez also started the preseason opener against the Lions last week.

It’s not clear whether Sanchez is getting the start because rookie Geno Smith suffered an ankle injury against the Lions, because Smith was “brutal” in practice on Wednesday, or some combination of the two. But one way or another, Sanchez remains ahead of Smith on the depth chart.

The Jets haven’t put any timetable on when they plan to name a starter for Week One of the regular season, but Smith is starting to run out of time to take the job from Sanchez. As the incumbent starter who is starting the first two weeks of the preseason, Sanchez has to be viewed as the favorite to be the starter when the Jets open the regular season against the Buccaneers.

  1. Well now I have my out for the Jets Pre-season game. Saves me some money on drinks, tolls and parking. Thanks Rex!

  2. Why would they start Geno? He is a rookie who by all accounts has a bit of mental work to do before he starts, and that is fine. The NFL needs to cool it with rookie quarterbacks. If the Jets rush Geno they’ll be making the same mistake they made with Sanchez.

  3. If Sanchez does become the starter, then it doesn’t say much for Geno Smith. What can you say? It was going to be either Beavis or Buttfumble anyway.

  4. You know what they say!!!! “you can polish a turd all day long and at the end of the day you still have a Green Bay Packer fan”!!!! Badda Bing!!!!!!

Mark “my dirty” Sanchez…. will be the starter week one!!!!

  5. Sanchez’s contract is why he is still there and why he most likely will be starting. Paying that 8M for a guy to hold a clipboard? Just don’t see it. Geno is going to have to do something real impressive over the next couple preseason games to get rid of Sanchez as the incumbent QB.

Do you remember when Pete Carroll reacted so negatively when Sanchez declared for the draft early? Hmmm…

Would you have said that after his 1st 2 years with 2 trips to the title game? This makes no sense.

  7. Why not? He earned it. Just ask him and he’ll tell you.

He he he he. Sorry, couldn’t contain myself with that comment.

  8. Who really cares? I doubt Jets fans even care anymore about who starts at QB as none of them on the roster are worth a nickel.

I will tell you what “makes no sense”. The idea that you believe Sanchez “led” the Jets to two title games in his first two years.

    Shut up!!

  11. Too bad it is a pre season game. Otherwise this game in the regular season could be billed as the Jadeveon Clowney Bowl as these two teams along with the Raiders appear to be locks for the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

  12. Sanchez’s luck continues. If Geno had been healthy he would’ve started. Smith will start the 3rd preseason game (if jealthy) and get his opportunity.

  13. Sanchez will be the starter unfortunately for Jets fans, but you really do not have anyone else. The Jets should have cleaned house in 2012, but such is fate. One thing is for sure, Rex and Sanchez will be gone next year. Hopefully your next first round draft pick will be better than the last ones. The Jets drafts remind me of the Raider drafts of so many seasons past. Uggg. Take the pain.

  14. Sanchez has to be viewed as the favorite to be the starter when the Jets open the regular season against the Buccaneers.

And there was much Buccaneer rejoicing.

Yup, because his entire career numbers stink. Bottom on the barrel. He was carried to those AFCC Losses by players that are no longer on the roster.
    Wrecks team is a flake.

  17. No matter what you think of Sanchez even a casual Jets observer has to admit he has been much better this preseason than Smith.

I know that is kind of like saying he’s been the tallest midget in the circus, but it’s a fact.

Smith hasn’t seized the opportunity, plain and simple.

  18. Someone has to start at QB for the Jets. And the guy who opens the season starting very likely won’t finish it.

Worst case scenario for Jets fans is that Sanchez is the opening day starter and the defense is lights out. Winning six of the first nine games means you are seeing Sanchez all year and probably bringing him back next season.

  19. Someone please tell Sanchez that guys with receding hairlines shouldn’t push them even further back with squirrelly headbands like the one he’s wearing. Mercy!

  20. QBs get too much credit and take too much blame. He definitely didnt lead them to the title games but he made the big plays when he needed to. The Jets have screwed him over with the roster and a change of scenery will help, but going to the fact that he shouldnt have left college when he did is a pointless argument.

  21. The fact that he is the worst quarterback in Jets history aside, that seriously is the lamest headband I have ever seen on a man in my life.

Who could be the first active NFL player to “come out”? I think we have our answer. 😉

I actually agree with the argument that just because a team had a winning record and made the playoffs, it’s not necessarily because the QB “led them” there.

So how come you’re not allowed to make it about Tim Tebow?

Not sure if Squapity would have said it, but I would since we ALL know it was their D and running game that got them there in spite of Sancheezy. Or was it his color-coded wrist band that got them there?

Yes, it will be tough, since Sanchez plays so well! (eye roll)

  25. Why are you all wasting all that bandwidth?

Pittsburgh and Miami will play for the AFCC.

    Just ask the trolls above.

(Either team won’t sniff the playoffs)

How much did Matt Flynn make last year???

  27. I agree with everyone else! LOL does it really matter who they start? The team is just god awful, it’s not just the QB’s! Face it they are going to blow balls no matter what!

    __________

Matt Flynn wasn’t an incumbent like Sanchez is. So he had no connection to anyone on the Seahawks and got outplayed by Wilson. So the Seahawks ate that contract for that year because it was obvious who was going to lead them.

Geno has not done anything to make anyone think that he is superior to Sanchez. Add in that contract and they are going to play the incumbent who already has ties to the team rather than put in a new face with no ties and no more upside.

  29. when you pay a guy a billion dollars, he should be your starter, no question. the big question is, how awful will dirty sanchez be, and when is the next butt fumble?

  30. I love how you morons who aren’t even jets fans comment on jets related issues as a jets fan ill take the wait and see approach on Sanchez because the truth is he has looked good is he going to throw 10 to 12 picks good chanc he is but I think he’s Gona throw at least 28 td’s this year but then again I’m a jets fan.

  31. Phinfan-
So you’re saying you want the Guy that lit you up with 147 yds to Santonio Holmes alone in Miami last year??????
You might want to rethink that one.

C’mon now. Admit it. He only makes that “millions” because he found a bunch of fools to pay it to him. Or, are you saying he earned it? Cause I kinda doubt ANY other team would have given him that kind of dough (or actually, any dough at that).

  36. Smith is better than Sanchez that’s a given but that’s like saying the 30 yr old me was a better driver than the 67 yr old me the problem is was I ever a good driver or is Smith a good QB.

  37. arm chair GM, haha i love it. yup mark sanchez sure is better than all of us for “making millions”. this dude probably cant walk into a restaurant in his own teams city without getting laughed out of the place. sanchez can keep his millions and keep spending it on fashion statements and looking like a complete buffoon hahahah
