Mort: Jenkins lacks confidence and “swag”

A.J. Jenkins AP

49ers receiver A.J. Jenkins finds himself at a crossroads, early in his career.  To stay on the path of NFL football, the 2012 first-round pick needs to find a way to act like a guy who has had the success that, to date, Jenkins hasn’t enjoyed.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the 49ers believe Jenkins has talent, but that he lacks confidence and “swag.”

And, yes, Mort actually said “swag” on the air.

If Jenkins doesn’t develop confidence and/or “swag” soon, he may not be an NFL player much longer.

Maybe he’ll have swag when he’s playing for the L.A. KISS.

You wouldn’t describe players like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady with the word “swag.”

Well of course it’s a negative comment from mortensen, he’s not a packer so mort obviously will find something wrong with him.

The same can be said for the FortyWHiners head coach based on his never ending whining, crying, and lying.

The same can be said for the FortyWHiners QB based on his fetish of body ink, and posing in ways that look like he should just come on out of the closet already.

The same can be said of FortyWHiner fans based on their never ending need to be obnoxious, uncivilized, mouthy, and threatening to any child or elderly lady, which shows all of us they lack total confidence and ooze low self esteem due to little packages.

    ESPN is absolutely terrible.

  8. thirdistheworrd says: Aug 15, 2013 8:15 PM

Yes. Swag is a real thing. Everybody who’s ever played a sport can tell you that if you don’t have utter confidence in yourself and believe that you are the most talented player out there, every time you step on the field, you won’t be on the field very long.

And I’m not talking about your Rodmans, or your TO’s, or D. Halls or loudmouth showoffs. Every consummate professional: your Birds, Unitas’ Peytons, and London Fletchers all ooze swag because they know they’re the best, even if they don’t haves to advertise it by acting like a goofball (not that there’s anything wrong with a little Jared Allen/Chris Cooley/Dr. J showmanship).

That’s why people are paid to be professional sports psychologists, because without the correct mindset, without swag, you cannot succeed at any level of sports.

@swaggyy, how does it feel to be a seattle fan? A fan base that has not experienced excitement of winning even *once*…oh I know Sonics won one championship but you ran them out of town.

BTW, that would a NBA team that you have not heard about since most of you are bandwagoners!

    Hahahahahahahahahaha

This applies to you to @Iknoweverything.

Everyone, let’s not bring up Carpenter who was drafted at an earlier spot (not the same year).

    ———————————————

All these daily reports are due to one reason: he hasn’t done anything. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of folks who were eligible to be drafted he was taken 30th overall out of all of that talent.
The fact is it’s clear this kid has zero confidence. His play hasn’t been bad it’s been appalling and borderline repugnant.

  25. jayniner says: Aug 15, 2013 9:03 PM

Jenkins obviously had enough “confidence and swag” to con the 49ers into a 4-year $6.9 million contract…..

  26. henson58 says: Aug 15, 2013 9:03 PM

I firmly believe a receiver doesn’t come in to their own until halfway in to 2nd season or maybe start of 3rd. Seems like teams are getting away from developing players. Good players are gonna be lost due to the lack of patience because of how quickly someone else caught on. At any position some of these prospects flourish right away and some take time. And has anyone thought maybe just maybe this system doesn’t fit his style. I would give him time the kid obviously has talent he may not be AJ Green or Megatron but he could be a solid player at some point.

  27. frankdatank23 says: Aug 15, 2013 9:04 PM

Lol at Kids thinking swag is some new development. It’s an abbreviation of a common word used before any of us were born.

Everything is sports reporting is so in the moment, stating the obvious. “struggling player lacks confidence!” Then the situation changes and then they change the story, nobody remembering the fact that they were just saying the opposite. Not so long ago, when Woods was #50 in the world, everyone was on the bandwagon saying he’s done. Now he is #1 in the world again and has won 5 times this year. Does anyone remember that Victor Cruz had zero catches in his rookie year? Jenkins probably won’t produce like you would want a first rounder to, but he may actually turn out fine. But will anyone call Mortensen out on this reporting in the future? No. No wonder athletes think sports journalist are garbage.

  38. sampsonswag01 says: Aug 15, 2013 9:59 PM

As a very strong 49er fan I knew something was wrong with this kid months ago. People who think this is another Crabtree event couldn’t be further from reality. If a true low-end 1st round (or even high end 2nd round) cannot find some way to get himself to contribute in *any* manner beyond other players getting hurt late into the season; that’s an issue.

People keep thinking this guy is going to flip the switch yet he’s had the championship professional grade top-of-their-field coaching, an elite head coach with a very creative OC, a QB who can make any throw on the field to and will throw you open AND is surrounded by All-Pro and Pro-Bowl players…………………….Jenkins will never, ever have a scenario better prepared than what he is getting right here and right now……………..and, yet, he can’t perform. If those aren’t red flags for people……I don’t know what would be.

  39. northbynw27 says: Aug 15, 2013 10:00 PM

    @bobhk

The difference between Jenkins and Carpenter is apples to oranges. Carpenter HAS STARTED GAMES IN THE NFL. Jenkins can’t even catch balls against a scrubby SF secondary in practice. Jenkins can’t even catch balls in preseason games without coughing it up.

  40. souldogdave says: Aug 15, 2013 10:01 PM

I would have said swagger. Swag is what you get at trade shows. Swagger denotes supreme confidence but not hubris. If they can wait a couple of years, who knows? Right now he’s not a starter and doesn’t look good. One more year to see if truly a bust

    @Bobhk

Typical Niners fan. Only wants to talk about the SBs they won over a decade ago and avoid present day football. No one cares anymore man. Its a new ball game. Honestly, you know, it doesn’t feel that good that we havent won a super bowl. Im sorry thay my team wasnt blessed with two HOF QBs. But I’m optimistic we will win a few very soon though. And great Carpenter comparison. Not. At least he has seen the field. His issues are injuries. He has still looked pretty good when on the field. There is a difference between being physically unable to perform due to injury and physically unable to perform because the player flat out sucks and the team doesn’t have confidence in them. I guarantee you right now that Carpenter will be a very good left guard in this league. And also I never was a Seattle Sonics fan. I’m a Portland trail blazers fan.

BTW, how was that 42-13 beat down and not being able to win the SB this past season because your QB choked? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    See you week 2 buddy.

  46. billmead1976 says: Aug 15, 2013 10:45 PM

seems like a public smear campaign by the 49ers. lots of first rounders never make it in the league. why is there all this press about Jenkins not producing?

  47. swaggyy says: Aug 15, 2013 10:49 PM

But I forgot to completely answer your question. It feels GREAT to be a Seattle fan. The only Seattle team I root for is the Hawks. They’re in my opinion the most talented and deepest team in the NFL. We have a great young franchise QB who is driven to bring us multiple titles. How does it feel to be a SF fan? How do you feel about your depleted secondary and lack of wide receivers? Your defensive line is absolutely nothing special either because Justin Smith is ancient coming off injury and ya have no one else. Frank Gore is ancient as well with lots of miles. All your other backs are unproven. Your center is ancient. Teams are going to pass on your defense all day long. Everyone thinks that team is so deep and talented. Its crap. Russell Wilson and his boys will have something to say about that the next years . Enjoy living in the past

Swag isn’t the problem, it’s having bent digits on both hands from the ball bouncingoff of them.

Swag is the term that fits. Swag is more than confidence. It’s the aura you exude. Marshawn Lynch has swag. Megatron, AP, Richard Sherman, Patrick Willis = swag

AJ is a bust with no heart. Go work on your craft and maybe AJ will gain some confidence.

  52. theytukrjobs says: Aug 15, 2013 11:39 PM

I don’t get it. From all accounts, he’s a big bodied athletic WR with good work ethic and no personality issues. Good college player.

And while the 49ers have solid WR’s, it isn’t like they are 5 deep with sensational players.

Yet here Jenkins sits. If not for him being a 1st rounder he’d almost surely be cut. I still think the 49ers have to keep him and just hope he figures it out, but at this point his ceiling is probably a 4th WR or a possession guy.

Please don’t try and tell me this is a “race” issue. Swag is more of a trendy word to describe confidence and style. It has ZERO to do with race. It’s more an age issue. You wouldn’t describe Peyton Manning or Tom Brady with swag because they are players from an older generation. No one has swag who once danced to the Macarena.

A.J Jenkins should have never turned down Jerry Rice when he asked him to run the hill. If Jenkins wants confidence…he should look for a mentor like Rice and he can teach him a few things about confidence. I think AJ Jenkins was a reach and he needs to step up his game because as a 30th pick in the draft…the spot light is shining down on your neck. Wherever you go and whatever you do…the medias going to be all over your tale because the 49ers have high expectations on you. The difference between AJ Jenkins and Quintton Patton is confidence…Patton has tons of confidence and is eager to play…but poor Jenkins, all that speed you have is natural…but confidence, you will have to build upon it…so start building it up and prove the doubters wrong. I’m pulling for you because I believe in chances but if you’re not cut out to be a receiver than your NFL career will end quickly.

I’m astounded that so many of my fellow 49er fans think there’s no issue with this guy. Let me run a list down and see what everyone else:

    (1) – is receiving the best coaching the football world has to offer since being drafted.

    (2) – has a quarterback that can feed the ball and throw receivers open anywhere on the field.

    (3) – was being mentored by a future HOFer in Randy Moss, gamer in Crabtree and other solid vets.

    (4) – was publicly invited by the single greatest WR of all time….but declined the invitation for whatever reason.

    (5) — was buried on the depth chart allowing for an inconspicuous way to learn the craft for nearly 3/4 of a season void of scrutiny or any meaningful media attention.

    (6) –supposedly has some of the fastest wheels at the combine.

    (7) — has the full and unfettered support of an organization that has every reason to want to have this guy succeed thus providing him THE BEST circumstances possible to succeed anywhere in the league……………………………………………………………….

And after ALL of that supportive structure and environment……………he was:

    (a) Never allowed into a game UNTIL the WR corp became a MASH unit…and still his efforts were very unremarkable.

    (b) Was removed from the NFCCG for UDFA and practice squad player Chad Hall (who, coincidentally, had no problem getting a single reception)…..a game played on turf which would seem grossly advantageous for a guy of Jenkins’ speed.

    (c) Began the game against Denver in pre-season playing against 2nd tier talent.

One word describes what the coaches think of Jenkins right here and right now:

    UNTRUSTWORTHY.

Being untrustworthy is worse than being tagged injury prone.
