Vilma has knee surgery, expected back for opener

Well, now we know why Jonathan Vilma was in Philadelphia, and what he was getting a second opinion on.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Saints linebacker is having knee surgery today.

Vilma is expected to miss the rest of the preseason, but is expected to be ready for the regular season opener.

Vilma’s viability has been a question on several levels. He missed six games last year because of knee problems, and had to take a pay cut just to keep his spot with the Saints.

There’s also a reasonable question of how good a fit he is in a 3-4 defense, and that question will now have to be answered without the benefit of preseason snaps to work on it.

Even without Vilma the Saints have two of the better middle linebackers in the league in Lofton and Hawthorne. I think we’ll be fine.

Not good…as much as I hate to say it it may be time for Vilma and Will Smith to retire…reduced salary and all…

Why would vilma have any reason to retire ?

Even if it is an injury article, it’s nice to read something about the Saints without the word “bounty” in it.

Will he be hobbled, old, lost a step? Possibly. But I disagree with the last statement of the piece in a general sense. When young/healthy, Vilma could flat out ball at any position, inside or out..

    Vilma, it’s called karma

I know Vilma’s play hasn’t been what it used to be but the guy is still a great defensive leader and his vocal skills are always a huge help! He is also a great locker room leader! But yes his time is coming to an end! Just hope the Saints do good by him for all the great years he has given them! Who Dat Who Dat! I also agree with MDD93! We have great LB’s in Lofton and Hawthorne! We’ll be alright no matter who is out there! Can’t wait for the season to start! So amped!

What a loudmouth. Not sure why that’s related to his knee, but he is a loudmouth.
