Martellus Bennett says lack of preseason targets means nothing

AP

In the Bears’ first two preseason games, tight end Martellus Bennett has had exactly zero passes thrown his way. Bennett says that’s nothing to worry about.

Bennett wrote a series of messages on Twitter on Friday morning, attempting to nip in the bud any talk that his lack of targets in Thursday night’s preseason game — or his lack of targets in last week’s preseason game — is an indication that he’s not going to be a big part of new coach Marc Trestman’s offense.

“I see a lot of fans and media talking about me getting targets right honestly it’s only preseason,” Bennett wrote. “I catch 0 or a 100 balls now and It’s Still going to mean to same exact thing ‘nothing’ whatsoever. I’m all in to whatever we do on offense. I’m not interested in being a pre-season all star. The only thing that matters is that Cincy game. I’m not mad or anything. I just wanted to tell you guys (the fans) before they (the story makers) wrote something silly. Lol.”

I could suggest that after the Bears brought Bennett in to give Jay Cutler more options in the passing game than just Brandon Marshall, it’s troubling that all five of the passes Cutler threw on Thursday night were intended for Marshall. But I’m one of “the story makers,” so I’ll refrain from writing anything silly.

  1. Martellus Bennett or Marty-B as I like to call him doesn’t care about the preseason. If he isn’t getting targets during the regular season, you will see him act accordingly.

    Thank You….very much, really

  3. Too many ‘story-makers’ don’t get that it would be stupid for the Bears to spread the ball around in pre-season, and thus reveal more of Trestman’s game plays than they should.

    Go Bears!

  4. If Bennett wants to blame someone privately, I susggest blame Cutler. Cutler continues to view Marshall as the only receiver on the team (and ignoring the rest of the squad).

  5. Marty B Marty B, my Cowboy that played himself right out of Dallas. He has yet to mature and take his skills to the next level. Hopefully Chicago is a better fit than Dallas and New York. Maybe he will get knocked around in the North.

  6. Cutler likes Marshall… ok so. Rivers likes gates and nobody else but you don’t hear anything about that??? It preseason why show the whole playbook, no one else does. Trestman said he didn’t want to use his red zone package in preseason. Side note Kyle Long isn’t looking over drafted to me!!! Dude is a beast!!

  7. Cutler is a QB who “targets his throws” so 5 stright passes to Marshall should not suprise anyone.
With a good QB like Eli , that is not happening!

  8. Yeah, Trestman did say that they really limited the playbook and didn’t call some of the Bennett plays to not give away too much of the playbook. And 4 of the 5 targets had Marshall as the first read and he was open.

  9. Bears won, who cares! And if Jay threw to him 20 times in 2 games and they lost there would be a story about Forte and Marshall not getting the ball more. So really a story about Bennet not getting the ball in a win, is not really a bad thing.

  10. He will enjoy the Cincy game because they will take away Marshall and the running game so it’s gonna be quick passes to the TE before Geno Adkins and crew is all per Cutler.

  11. Combining a TE that’s an emotional basket-case with a QB that has no emotions except disdain is an interesting chemistry experiment.

  12. Martellus Bennett is an above average player that finally got the opportunity to start and catch a lot of passes. In my opinion, he really left a good place in New York but they did not want to pay him the top dollar Chicago offered.

If Jay Cutler wants to tarnish his reputation, throw to Bennett. He will open the lanes for Alshon Jeffrey, Brandon Marshall, and Matt Forte.

If they do not utilize Bennett it’s their fault. Best of luck to the Black Unicorn.

SHUT HIM UP! Rodgers played in that game in green bay against the Cards and the packers didnt score 1 point. WHY? because they dont have a WR on that team thats worth the number on his jersey. ROLE PLAYERS at best. Dom should run out of green bay while he still has a good name cause the packers is planning to blame him for this season. Now! why did Aaron Rodgers turn down a date with Miss America and then tell everybody on the internet about him LOOKING INTO RYAN BRAUN’S EYES. but filthymcnasty1 wont stop so FAT Johnny purple drank Jolly looks like he just got outta Jail. and the packers dressed this bum in a cheese suit and put him on a NFL field. that O-line will get Rodgers, Starks, and any fat RB killed in that back field.

So you’re angry, and you’re going to get even by saying that Aaron Rodgers is gay?

    HAHAHAHA!

    How’s that working for ya?

  15. @filthymcnasty1
Dont put words in my comment. I said Rodgers turned down a date with Miss America. then went all over the internet talking about LOOKING IN RYAN BRAUN’S EYES.

you said Rodgers is gay BUT when your right… you are right.

  16. Bennett is a TE that can block, and catch.

As this newly implemented offense irons out the wrinkles, specifically the Oline, It makes sense that he was utilized in the blocking game, more than the passing game.

  17. It means you left a future HOF QB in Eli Manning and went after the money instead. Have fun with that crybaby choker that the Bears call their starting QB.
