Stop the presses: Sanchez, Gabbert look good

Just call MetLife Stadium “Bizarro World,” because two of the NFL’s most maligned quarterbacks are looking great there tonight.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert both got off to good starts in Saturday night’s preseason game, with both men marching their teams down the field on early touchdown drives.

Sanchez got things started with an outstanding drive on which he threw three passes, completing them for 11, 23 and 23 yards, with the final completion going to Jeff Cumberland for a touchdown. He appeared to be in total command of the offense, and Jets coach Rex Ryan grinned widely after the touchdown pass.

But Gabbert answered with a tremendous drive of his own, going 4-for-4 for 71 yards and capping it off with a five-yard touchdown toss to Allen Reisner. Gabbert, who was shaky in last week’s preseason opener, looked outstanding.

That wasn’t the end of the good quarterback play: The Jets got the ball back and Sanchez proceeded to march them down the field again, with the drive stalling only when receiver Stephen Hill failed to come up with a catchable ball from Sanchez. The Jets settled for a field goal on that drive.

On the Jaguars’ next drive, Gabbert again moved the offense smoothly, and although a third-down pass into the end zone fell incomplete and Jacksonville had to settle for a field goal, it was another solid drive.

It’s just the first quarter of a preseason game, so we shouldn’t overreact. But everything about both of these quarterbacks look great tonight. Well, everything except Sanchez’s mustache.

Two awful teams shredding each other hardly warrants stopping the presses.

Yo Gabba Gabbert and Sanchez will be out of a job by mid season…..

  4. vikingsvoice says: Aug 17, 2013 8:26 PM

Inconsistency has been Sanchez’s M.O. his entire career. Not quite unlike most young QB’s.

    Their Super Bowl.

“Two awful teams shredding each other hardly warrants stopping the presses.”

The downvotes this statement is getting can ONLY be from Jets and Jaguar fans…. no one else in their right mind would downvote such a TRUE statement.

Stop the presses: Sanchez and Gabbert are facing the Jags and Jets defenses.

  9. NotoriousKDV says: Aug 17, 2013 8:36 PM

Sanchez looked even better against Buffalo in week 1 last season and we all know how the rest of that season turned out. So let’s not get all excited just yet MDS.

And Sanchez is again looking lovely with his new fashion line of designer headbands on the sideline! Well, at least it’s not a tiara.

Nice pic…he looks like a little person.

Blaine Gabbert: The Real American (hell ya the Jags are going to win!) If you have’t seen that video yet, look it up, it’ll make your weekend a bit more enjoyable.

  15. jr507 says: Aug 17, 2013 8:44 PM

what’s worse than Sanchez and Gannett? Guys who spend their Saturday nights talking crap online to us Jets and Jags fans who have real interest in the game. Sweet life.

  16. greenytheterp says: Aug 17, 2013 8:49 PM

Maybe they should update this for the great interception he threw in the end zone. He is so inconsistent…

    “Sanchez, Gabbert look good”

    Yeah…. against those two defenses.

  18. shadowcell says: Aug 17, 2013 8:51 PM

I really hope Gabbert and Sanchez turn out to be awesome this year, just to confuse everyone.

  19. thegreatgabbert says: Aug 17, 2013 8:57 PM

Gabbert’s starting receivers had 2 career NFL catches between the three of them. Two undrafted free agents and a 5-7 fourth round punt return specialist.

  20. greenytheterp says: Aug 17, 2013 9:19 PM

Sanchez really looked masterful at the end of the first half (not). In all honesty, he moved the offense pretty well in the first half but really did poorly twice in the red zone. You just can’t make those mistakes…

  21. flipola says: Aug 17, 2013 9:30 PM

Ah, preseason. Where the 0-16 Lions go undefeated.

  22. bighurt228 says: Aug 17, 2013 9:32 PM

Guess ole Rexy can proclaim again how the Not Yets , will be Super Bowl bound and win the whole thing!!

  23. kacapaco says: Aug 17, 2013 9:35 PM

and then Sanchez throws an INT 😦

  24. kiopta1 says: Aug 17, 2013 9:40 PM

    Could Sanchez look anymore dirty?

  25. vincentbojackson says: Aug 17, 2013 9:46 PM

I was ready to tip my hat to Sanchez on that first drive TD pass.

Then I saw him do that silly airplane celebration running down the field like they won the Superbowl. At that point I just shook my head and turned the TV off.

  26. dontbuttslapyourlawyer says: Aug 17, 2013 9:58 PM

Doing your signature td celebration as a QB in the PREASEASON tells me all I need to know about who mark Sanchez is………just sayin

  27. larrydavid7000 says: Aug 17, 2013 10:09 PM

Because both defences SUCK Big Time.

  28. cwk22 says: Aug 17, 2013 10:53 PM

Love how thegreatgabbert always feels the need to make it look like a drama unfolding before our eyes. “In spite of the overwhelming odds he had to face: (poor receivers, etc) he once again overcame adversity and proved how great a QB he is!” Ha ha ha ha. Yea right!

  29. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Aug 17, 2013 10:58 PM

These two QBs needed to play against a bad team to gain confidence. They both were able to at the same time.

    Super Bowl preview.

  31. harry1941 says: Aug 17, 2013 11:39 PM

You fans are forgetting that the Jets defense has a new defensive coach,,and so does the offense.Tony went to SD. It take time to learn the new system.

  32. briang123 says: Aug 18, 2013 1:37 AM

Too bad for each of them all 16 games can’t be against each other.

  33. nyg201 says: Aug 18, 2013 7:12 AM

Seriously, if your a JET fan and believe Sanchez is a playoff qb your only kidding yourselves. He just doesn’t have the DNA to be a playoff/Superbowl qb.

Don’t give me well his first two years story. 1. That excuse is too old already and 2. it was b/c they had the no.1 def and no.1 rushing attack. Two things they haven’t had the past two years.

good qbs make plays when the original play breaks down something sanchoke can’t do.

  34. bookofelisha10 says: Aug 18, 2013 6:44 PM

as a giants fan i never want to see sanchez go anywhere for a few years– i love watching his play. its so terrible each quarter i laugh..of course this is during tthe timeouts when Eli is tossing bombs to cruz
