Tony Gonzalez plans to play in Falcons’ third preseason game

After getting some time off from training camp, Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is ready to get to work.

Gonzalez told Jay Glazer of FOX Sports that he is getting ready to leave for the airport to fly to Atlanta today and plans to be at work with his teammates on Sunday. He also plans to play in the Falcons’ third preseason game, next Saturday against the Titans, which is typically the game when teams try to get as many of their starters on the field as possible.

“It’s time for me to get back there,” Gonzalez told Glazer. “I need to get some work with Matt [Ryan] and the offense. I’m excited.”

The 37-year-old Gonzalez said last year that he planned to retire, but he reconsidered in part because the Falcons told him they’d be flexible with his schedule and allow him to spend more time with his family during the offseason. Gonzalez, who led the Falcons with 93 catches last season, has always been dedicated to health and fitness and is expected to show up in Atlanta in excellent shape.

This guy literally does the same things Favre used to do (retire, unretire, show up to training camp when he wants, etc), yet no one in the media ever seems to call him out for it.

Well, the Falcons will only be in one playoff game this year before Matty Choke does his thing, so there’s your answer.

Not wishing it on him, but I expect him to be out for several games due to injury to those nicely vacationed 37 year old hamstrings.

@youarejealousof6rings: its guys like you who give us other Steeler fans a bad name and show poor sportsmanship. You actually sound like that Ravin troll joemontanaflacco, that all Steeler fans can’t stand.

There’s not a single person posting on this site that wouldn’t love to have Tony Gonzalez playing for their team. Glad hrs back and I’m looking forward to another amazing year.

This is an example of the future clause that the superstars will demand:
    Only two pre-season appearances.

Gonzalez has had a terrific career. So don’t get me wrong but I was surprised the Falcons were trying so hard to squeeze another year out of him.

He wanted to retire and is well past his prime. Probably time for the falcons to just move on.
