The Dolphins lost tight end Dustin Keller to a leg injury in the second quarter of Saturday’s game against the Texans and it’s looking like they may not be getting him back anytime soon.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that Keller is likely out for the season after the injury, which saw Keller’s knee shift to a precarious position after taking a blow from the helmet of Texans safety D.J. Swearinger. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald is hearing the same thing about Keller’s outlook and reports that the Dolphins have already started calling around about possible additions at the position.

Losing Keller would be a serious blow for the Dolphins offense since his arrival was cited as one of the reasons to believe that the team would be more productive on offense than they were last season. Long one of the few reliable targets for Mark Sanchez with the Jets, Keller was expected to play the same role for Ryan Tannehill.

Keller is on a one-year deal that he signed with the intent of playing well enough to turn it into a more lucrative and longer-lasting contract before the 2014 season. If the indications about the severity of his injury prove correct, Keller’s not going to get that deal and the whole thing will turn out to be an unfortunate lose-lose situation in Miami.
