Bruce Arians: Ryan Williams probably out for third preseason game

Cardinals running back Ryan Williams is running out of opportunities to show a new coaching staff what he can do before it has to start trimming the roster.

Williams, who has missed most of training camp and both exhibition games with a knee injury, is not expected to play in Saturday’s preseason game vs. San Diego, head coach Bruce Arians said Monday, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.

According to Somers, Arians indicated that Williams needs to return to the field.

If Williams can’t play Saturday, this could set up an “all-in” scenario of sorts for the third-year running back in the final preseason game at Denver on August 29 — assuming he’s still on the roster. ┬áThe Cardinals must pare down their roster to 75 players two days before the preseason finale. If Williams is in the mix for a reserve spot, his play in that final preseason game could be key.

A 2011 second-round pick, Williams missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury and most of the 2012 campaign with a shoulder injury.

They can trade him to San Diego for Ryan Matthews. A swap of injured underachievers.

Just a few years go this guy was the best running back in college football. Injuries really took him down. Went to a few house parties where he was there (he never drank) and he was always nice to everyone.

Too bad, if his body could hold up he’d of been quite the player.

Had the fortune to see him play in HS a lot as it’s not far from where I live. Very nice guy too.

Well atleast Mendenhall can get his #34 from him when they release him… running backs are a dime a dozen.. and injured ones are even easier to come across… just another college stud that doesnt pan out int he NFL… NEXT…..

    For 4greatestvikingever
Not a chance. Ryan Mathews is averaging over 5 yards a carry so far in preseason. Hope he stays healthy.

His competition for the #4 RB spot is Alphonso Smith. They might keep Williams and see if he can get healthy, because guys with Smith’s skills are always available to be picked up later if necessary.

This guys talented but has had some tough luck. I thought he had some real potential to be a very good lead back coming out of college, and was a bit miffed he went to a division rival.

My niece has a beautiful blown-glass unicorn figurine that’s probably more durable than this guy.
