Report: Von Miller suspension “at least” six games

AP

Broncos linebacker Von Miller said last week he was “confident” of winning his appeal, but he apparently shouldn’t have been.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Miller’s suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy will be “at least six games,” though he’s still trying to negotiate it down to four.

If that holds, Miller would miss games against the Ravens, Giants, Raiders, Eagles, Cowboys and Jaguars, and put his team in a significant bind.

They were already struggling to replace the pass-rush lost in the Elvis Dumervil fax-gate, and now have to figure out how to get to the passer without their best player for 37.5 percent of the season.

  1. And all of a sudden Denver doesn’t look nearly as “loaded” as the so called experts made them out to be do they?

  2. Sweet!! I’m shocked the NFL would suspend anyone from their beloved little darlings though.

  3. He can’t smoke a joint in the offseason? When he’s not getting paid? In a state where Marijuana is legal for recreational use?

    He should fight this all the way to the US Supreme Court.

  4. In the eyes of Ole Rodge, forgetting to go pee is the same as peeing positive.
    Von’s recent forgetfulness with his court date and subsequent arrest probably didnt help either.

  5. From all accounts Von’s infraction are from missing a test/class for a weed infraction 2 years ago. Not a failed test nor is it performance enhancing related.

    Why would the NFL punish him 6 games or more?

  6. And to think that people love to mention Von Miller and Clay Matthews in the same sentence.

    Two differences: Matthews has won a Super Bowl (first in a football family to do so) and Matthews has never been suspended or had to attempt to appeal a suspension.

  7. jaguars and raiders? its prob in the teams best interest that he doesnt play in those peewee scrimmages…why risk injury

  8. The third of the three preseason championship teams is starting to suffer the same fate as the other two.
    Niners, Hags and Donkeys fans this should just go to show you and everyone else how dumb it is to preordain yourselves champs
    Cheating and poor conditioning and the fact that God hates John Elway are all contributing to your downfall.

  9. The Supremes would toss it since his union collectivy bargained his “right to smoke dope” away.
    I thought his substance was PED’s not do-o-bies.

    Thick framed glasses can be deceiving.

  11. Week one no excuses win or lose for either team Denver Fans. We lost half our team and Pitta. You guys wont be full strength.

    Whatever happens take it like a man, give the other team credit.

    That’s because they haven’t started testing for HGH yet.

  13. Just admit that you got high and this will go away Von. I would love for an athlete to just be honest about their weed usage. Most fans actually support legalization.

    “Looks the debate over Aldon/ Von is officially over.
    49ers win again”
    ———————————————-
    Just wait until Justin Smith retires and then let’s debate on how great Aldon Smith is.

  15. Now if the Raiders can only remain healthy they may have a better chance of being better than the Broncos. Every team have guys getting hurt or suspended. Going to be a weird year if some off the wall team makes it that had no chance earlier this year.

  16. @kd75

    Playing in the NFL is a privilege….not a right! He may not be breaking the law, but the NFL has rules.

    “jimthebuilder27: and Matthews is nowhere near as good as Miller.”
    —————————————–
    Probably helps that Von is juiced up – meanwhile Clay is getting double/triple teamed every play cause he doesn’t have a Elvis Dumervil on the otherside to compliment him.

  18. Not saying this report is bogus but everyone keep in mind….EVERY media outlet is in such a rush to push THE “story” of the minute, they will risk putting info out there that isn’t 100% accurate….and then change/apologize for it later. Either way, not scaring this Broncos fan. Champions bounce back from adversity. In the end, I’m confident in a good season ahead.

  19. If I was broncos fan I’d be ecstatic…you play in the worst division in the league and last I checked still have Peyton at QB..you get a well-rested and very angry Von Miller back with 10 games to go? Shoot, where do I sign up for that?

  20. Broncos now without their two best defenders from last year, Miller and Dumervil, and they are still among Super Bowl favorites?

  21. Goodell has got to go! Unbelievable that this jerk makes $20M a year to ruin the game of football!

  22. Teams got really carried away trying to make players take pay cuts this offseason.

    I was really surprised Denver played hardball with one of its young stars in Dumerville. Baltimore seems happy to have him, and I’m sure Denver would be happy to have him back at his original salary at this point.

    Yeah, because we all know that every player who’s lined up alongside Justin Smith during his 10+ year career has nearly broken the sack record. And it’s not like Aldon Smith tore his shoulder the same time Justin tore his triceps last year.

    Nope. Watch one NFL mini-segment blabbing about Justin Smith holding for Aldon, and now everyone can discredit 2 years of absolute greatness. SMH.

    Say something original.

    Fact remains, that as of today, the debate over the best OLB in the draft 2 years ago has got to be Aldon. Von Miller is being suspended. What else needs to be said?

    Just because the media says it’s maryjane, doesn’t mean it’s so. Perhaps it is peds and the maryjane.

  25. Denver fan here: I am ok with the six games, Miller is an idiot. It will cost Denver but he deserves every game he is given. We obviously don’t know all the facts, but the NFL would not be this harsh if he does not deserve it.

    Don’t be fooled by the hipster glasses…

  27. Everyone had these guys as a Superbowl contender. Elvis left the building, Miller suspended 6 games, Bailey with a bad foot etc etc etc. This team looks like it’s falling apart with all the injuries and the Admin getting arrested and all. Sorta like a train wreck, Elway should be angry, makes him look stupid.

  28. As an unbiased party from all sides, let me get in on this Von Miller vs Aldon Smith vs Clay Matthews.

    Von Miller is in a class of his own.

    I love Aldon Smith and last year he was by far my favorite defensive players who isn’t on my team. Until I started watching Von Miller tape…

    Von Miller is one of the best all around LBs I’ve ever seen. He can do everything. And as far as pass rushing he is in a league of his own. Aldon Smith is a flat out beast but a lot of his sacks come from design. And many from that completely obvious Justin Smith holding play (I know niners fans will hate this but it’s true). Not saying that Aldon Smith doesn’t put a beating 1-on-1 with tackles. But not like Von Miller. Von has every pass rush move in the book.

    And Clay Mathews isn’t even in the conversation. He’s a good pass rusher but these other 2 have the ability to be all time greats. And for that dude to bring up that he’s better “because he has a Super Bowl” is laughable. Football is a team game buddy. That’s the worst argument, especially for a pass rusher. It’s not like they can have as much of an impact as a QB.

    Broncos fans better stick with this dude Von. This suspension will suck but Von has the ability to be an all-time great. You should consider yourself lucky to have him.

  29. Broncos will still win the division. Who else will? the Chiefs? Manning will just put up more points than the opposing team (ala Brady style) until the defense heals – no pun intended for Mr. Bailey.

  30. And for this dude saying that the debate is over between Von and Aldon, what does being suspended have to do with a players ability? Absolutely nothing.

    Aldon had his problems with DUI’s so let’s not act like he’s some saint.

    Von Millers suspension isn’t PED related. Violating the SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY is different than violating the PERFORMANCE ENHANCING policy.

  31. he should have took the 4 gamer like a good little boy, this division is so horrible anyways speaking from a colts fan, they will have no problems being without him for the first 6 games. count on that.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The comment you are referring to makes little sense but yours is worse. How many tackles, sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles/recoveries can a player make while suspended? While he is suspended, Miller is no more an impact player on the field for the Broncos than I am.
  33. The lesson here is: Don’t mess with the NFL!
    Who were the top plaintiffs against the NFL during the lockout? That’s right, Brees and Miller!
    The NFL will find something wrong you did and when they do, the wrath of the owners is upon you.
    Bountygate for Brees and a 6 game suspension for violating substance abuse policy when everyone gets 4!
    Keep your head down, play children’s game, make your millions. Don’t mess with billionaires who have judicial and political connections.
    What the Federal Supreme Court for the Federal Government that still have weed listed as a category 1 illegal drug ?
    I don’t think the Supreme Court would even consider hearing it other than to give themselves a good laugh.
    The Feds under Obama have backed off marijuana prosecutions, but until its legal under federal law you’re not going have much success fighting it in federal courts.
    And if the GOP were to get the presidency back they’ll just reverse everything that’s happened under Obama anyway.
    ===========================================
    Because Von was already on “parole” so to speak for previous violations. He has the follow the letter of the NFL’s law. Each additional violation is an escalator. He’s dumb enough not to follow the rules from his previous violations. If he doesn’t like it, he’s free to follow the Ricky Williams example and quit football to smoke all he wants.
  36. @FinsFan
    Yeah I’m not arguing who will be more productive on the field during Von Millers suspension between Von and Aldon. That’s pretty obvious.
    But a suspension has nothing to do with a players ability. Of course it will affect his stats but not so immensely that if he played in these 6 games he would be great, if he doesnt he will just be decent.
    So when arguing who is a better player between the 2, your talking about who is a more talented player. Yes Von Millers stats will suffer from missing some games but its not 100% about stats. Yes it’s largely about stats but for example, Aldon Smith has better sack numbers so far, but I think that Von Miller is a better pass rusher. And I think most unbiased minds would agree.
    Yes Vons stats will be affected but over his career this 4 or 6 games won’t make THAT much of a difference. In the end even with these missed games I bet you Von has more tackles, TFLS, pass deflections and makes more impactful plays overall.
    Just my opinion though.
  37. What is goin on here? All you people hatin yet NO ONE knows what hes even being suspended for? He didn’t test positive for ANYTHING PED or recreational, this is dumb. Actually I heard it was cuz he missed a test while over in Afghanistan with the troops….idk im just sayin this weird
  38. The biggest choke in the NFL Playoff History of the past decade was the Denver Defense against Baltimore Ravens 2012. Having Peyton only puts you in the playoffs. He has only won one out of all of those playoff appearances with just two S.B. showings. He knows how to lose in the playoffs. Fact not Fiction.
  39. @raiderssuckball
    Keep dreaming buddy! You guys are a Manning injury away from a total collapse. At least with Boldin and Pitta gone, having Champ and Miller out will kind of even things up. Of course I must exclude the NFL’s free “home game” gift to you guys for blowing the playoff game last year.
  40. These bad apples are causing the NFL to continue to get a bad name yet the union wants to stand behind these characters. NFL is more and more becoming MLB in letting all the bad stuff continue.
  41. Miller is getting the extra games for diluted urine. Its said they feel he drank to much water in attempt to dilute the urine.
    In my line of work, “missing a test” as you call it, or more commonly referred to as failing to appear, is the same as testing and failing. You lose your high five-figure job.
    However, in the NFL, instead of losing your multi-million dollar career, you get docked a few paychecks and get to move on.
  43. This is a truly bad and long-reaching problem. He has taken the snaps w/ first team up until now, depriving whoever his replacement will be of those snaps. When he comes back, he will not be the player he was, and will be more apt to be injured. The worst problems are 1) Elway can no longer trust him, nor can his teammates, so no chance of a long-term deal, 2) he will be on his own and wandering around, no longer within the structure of the team, he will be tested repeatedly by the team and one and ONLY one screw-up, and he is gone for at least a year. The chances of him fouling-up over the next six weeks is no SMALL predicament. Talk about throwing your life away…
  44. Clebrowns216 is finally someone with an actual football mind that posts in here. Thank you for spreading some knowledge. I was beginning to lose hope.
