Report: Von Miller suspension “at least” six games

Von Miller AP

Broncos linebacker Von Miller said last week he was “confident” of winning his appeal, but he apparently shouldn’t have been.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Miller’s suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy will be “at least six games,” though he’s still trying to negotiate it down to four.

If that holds, Miller would miss games against the Ravens, Giants, Raiders, Eagles, Cowboys and Jaguars, and put his team in a significant bind.

They were already struggling to replace the pass-rush lost in the Elvis Dumervil fax-gate, and now have to figure out how to get to the passer without their best player for 37.5 percent of the season.

    From all accounts Von’s infraction are from missing a test/class for a weed infraction 2 years ago. Not a failed test nor is it performance enhancing related.

    Why would the NFL punish him 6 games or more?

    And to think that people love to mention Von Miller and Clay Matthews in the same sentence.

    Yeah, because we all know that every player who’s lined up alongside Justin Smith during his 10+ year career has nearly broken the sack record. And it’s not like Aldon Smith tore his shoulder the same time Justin tore his triceps last year.

    Nope. Watch one NFL mini-segment blabbing about Justin Smith holding for Aldon, and now everyone can discredit 2 years of absolute greatness. SMH.

    Say something original.

    Fact remains, that as of today, the debate over the best OLB in the draft 2 years ago has got to be Aldon. Von Miller is being suspended. What else needs to be said?

Sorta like a train wreck, Elway should be angry, makes him look stupid.

  64. clebrowns216 says: Aug 19, 2013 12:04 PM

    As an unbiased party from all sides, let me get in on this Von Miller vs Aldon Smith vs Clay Matthews.

    Von Miller is in a class of his own.

    I love Aldon Smith and last year he was by far my favorite defensive players who isn’t on my team. Until I started watching Von Miller tape…

    Von Miller is one of the best all around LBs I’ve ever seen. He can do everything. And as far as pass rushing he is in a league of his own. Aldon Smith is a flat out beast but a lot of his sacks come from design. And many from that completely obvious Justin Smith holding play (I know niners fans will hate this but it’s true). Not saying that Aldon Smith doesn’t put a beating 1-on-1 with tackles. But not like Von Miller. Von has every pass rush move in the book.

    And Clay Mathews isn’t even in the conversation. He’s a good pass rusher but these other 2 have the ability to be all time greats. And for that dude to bring up that he’s better “because he has a Super Bowl” is laughable. Football is a team game buddy. That’s the worst argument, especially for a pass rusher. It’s not like they can have as much of an impact as a QB.

    Broncos fans better stick with this dude Von. This suspension will suck but Von has the ability to be an all-time great. You should consider yourself lucky to have him.

  65. lovefootball4life says: Aug 19, 2013 12:05 PM

    Broncos will still win the division. Who else will? the Chiefs? Manning will just put up more points than the opposing team (ala Brady style) until the defense heals – no pun intended for Mr. Bailey.

  66. clebrowns216 says: Aug 19, 2013 12:10 PM

    And for this dude saying that the debate is over between Von and Aldon, what does being suspended have to do with a players ability? Absolutely nothing.

    Aldon had his problems with DUI’s so let’s not act like he’s some saint.

    Von Millers suspension isn’t PED related. Violating the SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY is different than violating the PERFORMANCE ENHANCING policy.

  67. clebrowns216 says: Aug 19, 2013 12:12 PM

    And the Broncos will be fine. That’s the crappiest division! Haha who else will win it?

  68. sfsugator says: Aug 19, 2013 12:12 PM

    he should have took the 4 gamer like a good little boy, this division is so horrible anyways speaking from a colts fan, they will have no problems being without him for the first 6 games. count on that.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The comment you are referring to makes little sense but yours is worse. How many tackles, sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles/recoveries can a player make while suspended? While he is suspended, Miller is no more an impact player on the field for the Broncos than I am.
  70. grizzlybear54 says: Aug 19, 2013 12:32 PM
    The lesson here is: Don’t mess with the NFL!
    Who were the top plaintiffs against the NFL during the lockout? That’s right, Brees and Miller!
    The NFL will find something wrong you did and when they do, the wrath of the owners is upon you.
    Bountygate for Brees and a 6 game suspension for violating substance abuse policy when everyone gets 4!
    Keep your head down, play children’s game, make your millions. Don’t mess with billionaires who have judicial and political connections.
    I don’t think the Supreme Court would even consider hearing it other than to give themselves a good laugh.
    The Feds under Obama have backed off marijuana prosecutions, but until its legal under federal law you’re not going have much success fighting it in federal courts.
    Because Von was already on “parole” so to speak for previous violations. He has the follow the letter of the NFL’s law. Each additional violation is an escalator. He’s dumb enough not to follow the rules from his previous violations. If he doesn’t like it, he’s free to follow the Ricky Williams example and quit football to smoke all he wants.
  74. clebrowns216 says: Aug 19, 2013 1:19 PM
    @FinsFan
    Yeah I’m not arguing who will be more productive on the field during Von Millers suspension between Von and Aldon. That’s pretty obvious.
    But a suspension has nothing to do with a players ability. Of course it will affect his stats but not so immensely that if he played in these 6 games he would be great, if he doesnt he will just be decent.
    So when arguing who is a better player between the 2, your talking about who is a more talented player. Yes Von Millers stats will suffer from missing some games but its not 100% about stats. Yes it’s largely about stats but for example, Aldon Smith has better sack numbers so far, but I think that Von Miller is a better pass rusher. And I think most unbiased minds would agree.
    Yes Vons stats will be affected but over his career this 4 or 6 games won’t make THAT much of a difference. In the end even with these missed games I bet you Von has more tackles, TFLS, pass deflections and makes more impactful plays overall.
    Just my opinion though.
    The biggest choke in the NFL Playoff History of the past decade was the Denver Defense against Baltimore Ravens 2012. Having Peyton only puts you in the playoffs. He has only won one out of all of those playoff appearances with just two S.B. showings. He knows how to lose in the playoffs. Fact not Fiction.
    In my line of work, “missing a test” as you call it, or more commonly referred to as failing to appear, is the same as testing and failing. You lose your high five-figure job.
    However, in the NFL, instead of losing your multi-million dollar career, you get docked a few paychecks and get to move on.
  83. fdugrad says: Aug 19, 2013 7:26 PM
    This is a truly bad and long-reaching problem. He has taken the snaps w/ first team up until now, depriving whoever his replacement will be of those snaps. When he comes back, he will not be the player he was, and will be more apt to be injured. The worst problems are 1) Elway can no longer trust him, nor can his teammates, so no chance of a long-term deal, 2) he will be on his own and wandering around, no longer within the structure of the team, he will be tested repeatedly by the team and one and ONLY one screw-up, and he is gone for at least a year. The chances of him fouling-up over the next six weeks is no SMALL predicament. Talk about throwing your life away…
