Video shows Antonio Smith hitting Richie Incognito with helmet

Smith Getty Images

Texans defensive end Antonio Smith and Dolphins guard Richie Incognito have an ugly past.  And it got even uglier on Saturday night.

Jay Glazer of FOX has obtained video of Smith removing Incognito’s helmet during Saturday night’s preseason game between the two teams.  And then hitting Incognito with it.

In the face.

The video apparently comes from coaching tape generated by the game.  No penalty was called, even though it happened within the umpire’s line of sight.

Per Glazer, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin has contacted the league office regarding a possible fine or suspension of Smith.

Last September, Smith and Incognito had an incident during the Week One game between Houston and Miami.  Incognito apparently grabbed and held Smith’s leg.  Smith retaliated by kicking Incognito repeatedly in the head.

Incognito explained to PFT that has was trying to keep Smith from getting to a loose ball.  And Incognito was vindicated when the league office didn’t fine him.  Smith was fined $21,000.  On appeal, the penalty was reduced to $11,000.

Incognito undoubtedly won’t be fined this time, either.  Smith, however, should be concerned about a suspension.

two very dirty plays in one game. Attempted to use a helmet as a weapon with intent to injure. Half the season will do.

Why does everyone pick on lil Richie? the guy plays by the rules, is a nice guy, is respectful of his opponents.
Smith should be suspended at least 4 games.

However, Joe Philbin just made it onto the leagues biggest crybaby list. It is a short, but exclusive list reserved for the biggest whiners.
He joins Jim Harbaugh, and Packers fans.

To be fair, I think most people in the league would have liked to do what Smith did to Incognito.

Incognito is a filthy dirty player.

Eh…I don’t know. It’s a heat of the moment thing and happened quick. Kind of like when Roger Clemens threw the bat back at Piazza. I’ll give the defender the benefit of the doubt. No suspension but fine him.

Smith’s typically stupid reaction to Incognito’s typical dirty play – wrenching of Smith’s face-mask during the play (not called by the referee).

Dirty play from both sides, incognito’s hands all up in facemask(which would be a penalty)….dirty of Smith to rip helmet off, but momentum carried the helmet back in Icognito’s grill, not malice

  21. nygiantstones says: Aug 19, 2013 7:16 PM

Incognito should have been flagged for illegal hands to the face twice on that play. Everyone knows he’s dirty, and when someone is trying to decapitate you or break your neck, what’s a defender supposed to do? I got no issue with Smith on this play and appreciate the old school response to Incognito’s crap. These are grown men being paid tons of cash to be gladiators, this is nothing worse than a pitcher hitting a batter in baseball. You gotta protect your team and your teammates.

  22. wethog66 says: Aug 19, 2013 7:18 PM

Regardless of who was at the receiving end of a helmet to a helmetless head, that cannot be allowed to go unpunished. Very dangerous and un-called for.

Smith needs a 2 game REGULAR SEASON suspension at least. A strict precedent needs to be established for something like this. And here is a perfect opportunity. Then again the NFL will probably whiff on the opportunity because the NFL is to busy policing facemasks.

  23. skoobyfl says: Aug 19, 2013 7:18 PM

  27. eatitfanboy says: Aug 19, 2013 7:26 PM

I’m just curious at to what the heck that official was looking at on that play. Incognito definitely goes hands to the face which is a penalty. Smith rips his helmet off, which is a penalty, and then strikes him with it, which is a penalty.

At least three personal fouls occurred with that ref looking right at them.

  28. mrlaloosh says: Aug 19, 2013 7:29 PM

Smith is a dirty filthy pig. Just like the city of Houston.

  29. notoriousjebus says: Aug 19, 2013 7:30 PM

This was pretty dirty, but I can’t get too bent out of shape over it. I mean there is a professional sport called hockey where the players punch each other in the face and beat one another with wooden sticks wrapped with carbon fiber when there is bad blood.

  30. billsalldayaday says: Aug 19, 2013 7:31 PM

And that is what every NFL player wants to do to Richie.

He is a below-average guard by NFL standards and makes up for it with DIRTY tactics.

    FACT

  31. atleastimnotaraidersfan says: Aug 19, 2013 7:31 PM

  34. FinFan68 says: Aug 19, 2013 7:36 PM

Incognito has not been the most under control guy in the league but Antonio Smith’s actions were despicable. I missed that watching the game and I don’t remember the announcers mentioning it. Honestly, I am surprised that didn’t lead to an all-out brawl. I understand guys get hot-headed in the game but that was not part of a football play. That was a criminal act. Assault with a deadly weapon or some such charge could easily be claimed by a prosecutor. The league cannot justify a simple fine in the midst of their “safety” campaign. Guys are getting fined for accidents in a typical play. That was after the play and the intention was quite clear. That act deserves severe punishment. a season-long ban would not be surprising to me. I would feel the same way if Incognito was the idiot who swung the helmet. He has to sit for a long time.

    ================================================

Are you kidding? Ritchie Incognito is one of the more dirtier players in this league. He has made his mark as a dirty Offensive lineman by being nasty and grimy, willing to take a shot at someone, even if they are blind to the fact. When he started for Buffalo a few years ago, I immediately stuck up for him, thinking people were talking crap just because they didn’t like him. Then, one game against New England, I was able to see what others were talking about. Boy was this kid dirty! To me, a little fire in the veins never hurt nobody, but I don’t agree with hitting players when they aren’t looking, that’s a no no in my eyes.

I wouldn’t mind having Incognito on my team. Every team needs a scrappy guy on the line but he’s no doubt a somewhat reformed dirty player.

If they make an all-dirty team, he’s a starter.

  47. ncbeachlover44 says: Aug 19, 2013 8:22 PM

We all know that Incognito had issues early on in his career. No one here will debate that, and with that comes labels. However, he has cleaned his act up, based on the number of penalties and personal fouls he has received since being a Dolphin. He made the bed with the label, so he has to live with it. Having said that, Smith slinging an NFL helmet at him, or any player for that matter, shows malice and gross intent to injure. He cried about incognito last year and after further review, was himself slapped with a $21,000.00 fine, later reduced to $11,00.00….that dude is out of control and the NFL needs to make an example. Would hands to the face, which happens on EVERY play in a game we all played as kids, justify someone losing their life? And to the moron who said intent is not committing….Seriously?

  48. hdahs143 says: Aug 19, 2013 8:34 PM

I love all gossip about Incognito’s reputation.

Here is a question: Name a specific incident that Incognito was either fined or suspended for.

Now do the same for Antonio Smith.

Don’t you hate when facts ruin a good story!

  49. craniator says: Aug 19, 2013 8:37 PM

Gafraidh — the Texans are going to play New England at Reliant Stadium this year , not up in Foxboro , as they usually do. I’m well aware that the Patriots knocked the crap out of them twice last year ; revenge can be a powerful motivator , and that Houston defense looks pretty tough , with the offseason additions they’ve made and with Cushing coming back. Just sayin’.

  50. prospero63 says: Aug 19, 2013 8:43 PM

Clearly incidental. Helmet somehow managed to get stuck to Smith’s hand. Incognito needs to be suspended for 4 games for failing to properly secure his gear.

People wanna keep bringing up Cognitos past he did nothing wrong and Antonio Smith is a dirty SOB who should get suspended for the season there is just no call for that and so unprofessional put that’s coming to be a regular thing with the Texans just look what Jhonson did when he tore off Cortlands helmet and attacked him Texan players are dirty and they need to get a new coach in there who can control them animals.

  61. daddyb1gdrawz says: Aug 19, 2013 9:59 PM

What?!?! Are you guys serious? You are giving Antonio Smith an excuse by referring to Incognito’s past actions. Richie Incognito has never done anything as vile as swinging a helmet at another player. Sure he may hold, punch, spit or even clip a defender but those are benign compared to what a helmet can do. Antonio Smith needs to get suspended a regular season game or two. That sort of behavior is bush league regardless of the player.

  62. thorn49 says: Aug 19, 2013 10:07 PM

Perhaps the league should hold a mandatory viewing around properly securing your head gear.
Mr. Smith could have seriously been injured due to Richie’s negligence toward equipment. Although the clarity of the footage is Commodore 64ish at best, I’m interested to know if Richie had is thigh and knee pads in

I have a feeling he will be suspended for the entire year. After an appeal, it may be reduced. I know Incognito has a bad reputation and there is a history between the two. However, these facts will cause the NFL to act strongly.

    - They have a prior history of an altercation and the subsequent bad press.

    - I am almost certain the NFL has sent a warning to both players stemming from the first incident.

    - There was a previous fine to Smith which was moderate.

    - Incognito had no head protection and was struck in the head (this is significant in today’s NFL regarding head injuries). It could have been a lot worse if he was hit in the right spot.

    - The helmet was used as a weapon. It does not matter if there was intent.

    - A message will be sent due to this incident. The NFL will be heavy handed. There might be a ban.

Love all these people calling for a season long suspension for a NON-hit. If Suh got five games for freaking stomping on a guy’s head when he was on the ground then I can’t see Smith getting more for a missed swing.

Anotnio Smith and Incognito clearly have a past with one another. Last year, Incognito tried to break his ankle, and while trying to defend himself Smith was kicking him to let go of his ankle.

That carried of to this pre-season game. Incognito grabbed Smiths helmet, Smith grabbed his and ripped it off and out of reaction swung. I agree, Smith needs to be penalized, a game maximum. Its normally the 2nd guy who gets caught…. not the instigator.

Don’t forget Andre Johnson was suspened (0) games after throwing a hay-maker at Finnegan, another dirty, dirty player.

Smith won’t be so lucky for the fact it’s his second offense, but the league will take into account Incognitos past as well.

I’m guessing (1) regular season game. Which accounts for a hefty, hefty, fine.
