Vikings release cornerback Jacob Lacey

Danny Amendola, Jacob Lacey AP

The Vikings announced the release of cornerback Jacob Lacey on Monday.

The 26-year-old Lacey has started at least eight games in each of his first four NFL seasons. He recently had minor knee surgery.

Lacey (5-10, 183)  signed with the Vikings in April. He has recorded 257 tackles, defended 25 passes and hauled in six interceptions in his pro career, which began with Indianapolis in 2009.

Lacey notched 36 tackles and intercepted one pass for Detroit in 11 games in 2012.

Just how bad do you have to suck to be a former starter and then be cut by the Vikings?

Its not like their secondary is any good, it has to be injury related.

Hmm, the Packers could sure use some defense. I’m sure he will be taking a trip to the wrong side of the Mississippi soon. I have never heard of this guy, but I am confident that he would be an instant starter.

  6. ilovemyringlessfranchise says: Aug 19, 2013 4:24 PM

We’re pretty deep at CB now with Cook, Burton, Robinson, Sherels and the X-Man. Not likely that an injured player would make the roster at CB.

  7. elliottcovert says: Aug 19, 2013 4:24 PM

Good riddance, all we need is Harrison Smith beating the living daylights out of every receiver in the NFC North and we’ll be fine.

Harrison Smith absolutely dominated Calvin Johnson last season.

Hilarious for the Vikes to rag on the Pack’s D when the Vikings were worse in 2012…..Gotta fill the void of the empty trophy case somehow.

  9. essentialsausage says: Aug 19, 2013 4:33 PM

Not surprising. He was terrible when I watched him play for the Lions, and he must still be terrible since the Vikings cut him.

  10. sandblastermoron says: Aug 19, 2013 4:34 PM

Welcome to Greenbay Jacob!!!! You can join the rest of the bums on D-fense!!!!!

  11. nagasakee says: Aug 19, 2013 4:38 PM

Lacey was undersized to play against the Brandon Marshalls and Calvin Johnsons of the NFC North.

I suspect Sherels will be gone too, and soon. This may also indicate that Xavier Rhodes, Cook and Robinson are better than we thought.

  12. bballnut50 says: Aug 19, 2013 4:41 PM

Sherels is not going anywhere, top line PR, Ski-U-MA !!

  13. chrismgillis says: Aug 19, 2013 4:49 PM

    @elliottcovert
so when did Harrison Smith dominate Calvin. Calvin only had 54 yds in the first matchup. In their second matchup Harrison definitely had Calvin’s number (memorized) as he torched them for 211 yds. but yea, you’re right Harrison is a guy I’d love to see up against Johnson this year. Go Lion’s

  14. chrismgillis says: Aug 19, 2013 4:52 PM

o my bad, Calvin only had 207 yds the second game. I stand corrected

  15. stevent92 says: Aug 19, 2013 5:08 PM

Harrison Smith knocked Johnson flat in the end-zone in DET, forcing him to drop a game-tying TD.

Johnson is to be respected, a stats monster and a difference maker. But he got shellacked by both Smith and Greenway last year in the matchups vs. MIN. Who knows, maybe this year will be different. Many receivers in NFC North you can talk trash about. Calvin Johnson is not one of them.

  16. mn1288 says: Aug 19, 2013 5:12 PM

What’s also hilarious is the Packer’s top 4 CBs would start in MN. Outside of Harrison, that secondary is not to be respected. Rodgers torches them every game. Not to say GB’s defense is great, because it’s not, but MN fans sure talk a big game for a very mediocre defense and poor secondary.

  17. aldante66 says: Aug 19, 2013 5:13 PM

Packers better grab him, I hear he actually knows how to tackle and cover. He could be all world for them.

  18. chrismgillis says: Aug 19, 2013 5:17 PM

When one play constitutes “Dominate” I can forget 261 yds in two games. until then, numbers never lie.

  19. jrmbadger says: Aug 19, 2013 5:33 PM

Viking fans are living in the past. Go take a look at the defensive rankings last year and then make an argument how your defense is any good.

And for those thinking our cornerbacks suck, you might wanna do a little research. I’ve seen them ranked in the top 5 as a unit by several blogs and media outlets.

Bleacher report has the starting packer cornerbacks rated as follows:

Casey Hayward: 4th best in the league.
Sam Shields: 15th best in the league.
    Tramon Williams 45th best corner in the league;

    Not bad.

Guess what? The only Viking to make the list is Josh Robinson at number 100. Antoine Winfield was highly listed, but he’s no longer on your team, is he?

  20. jrmbadger says: Aug 19, 2013 5:36 PM

Sorry, I guess I missed Chris Cook at #67. Still, all three Packer starters are ranked higher than the Vikings first CB.

Add Micah Hyde to the mix (all indications are that he’s a real difference maker) and that’s not a group to mess with.

Now safety – that may be a different matter.

Packers D is notoriously soft and terrible but by your logic it’s not true if a fan of a team with a worse D says your D sucks? Wow, only in Green Bay!

  22. purpleguy says: Aug 19, 2013 5:42 PM

He might have had a chance if he hadn’t suffered two different sets of injuries. The writing has been on the wall regarding this release for two weeks.

  23. vikes1980 says: Aug 19, 2013 6:09 PM

they released this mediocre CB so they can keep Bobby Felder who has been one of the big surprises for the Vikings on both PR and coverage…. everyone talks about last year’s DB’s, but this is a new year with some new faces….gonna be much improved in the secondary this year…. he will get picked up by somebody that needs depth, but he is but starter material…

  24. Norseman says: Aug 19, 2013 7:03 PM

Bobby Felder definitely moving up the depth chart at CB. Lacey was mediocre at best in the past and can’t be evaluated because he’s injured.

The Vikings were waiting to see if anyone could step up among the 3rd team CBs and Bobby Felder has, so bye-bye Lacey.

Pretty straightforward but maybe it will make sense to you if I write it in crayons.

    Packers D sucks, flat out.

BUT, according to Packer fan logic, the D does NOT suck if a team with a D ranked lower than the Packers says it sucks.

    There, did that help?

  28. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Aug 19, 2013 8:41 PM

Wow, you Vike fans are great, dudes just trying to make the squad and contribute, misses out because of injury, and you can’t wait to rip him on the way out. Nice…

Well, for one thing, the Packers D does not suck. It was ranked in the top 1/3 of the entire NFL. How does that flat out suck? Please write it out in crayons. You’re right…..I’m not getting it.

  30. tokyosandblaster says: Aug 19, 2013 9:30 PM

The Packers defense does need to improve.

But not as badly as the Vikings defense needs to improve. Also, taking a horrible person from a horrible team wouldn’t really work.

But thanks, Contra, for always thinking of us! You should just start buying Packers jerseys. Then you can cheer for a great team instead of a horrible, irrelevant one.

  31. bobnelsonjr says: Aug 19, 2013 10:39 PM

As one of the lowest revenue franchises the vikings must cut almost all injured players when they can to save money.

Unfortunately for this guy there is no longer any hope. No one cut from the vikings gets picked up by an NFL team.

  32. mn1288 says: Aug 19, 2013 10:44 PM

Contra74 – King of the Rambling Posts. My point is, GB’s defense isn’t great, yet they’re a better ranking squad than the Vikes. Meaning the Vikes are very mediocre.

    GB’s 2012 ranking – 11th
    MN’s 2012 ranking – 16th

  33. 10tender says: Aug 19, 2013 11:40 PM

Unlike the G.B. fans that are willing to drop to their knees and please any Packer player, Chicago is the windy city(political reasons), Green Bay is the blow hard city(Tight lips and long winded).

Really? The Vikings had the worst? Seems to me the Packers are the team that let one RB have 500 yards against them in one season. But glad you added the Packer typical response of no championships. Way to make your fan base look intelligent.

Now all they have to do is get better at their front 7. Other than Matthews you have the making of letting running backs run for 500 yards in a season.

Is it possible for there to be one article Viking related that doesn’t attract Packer trolls?

I think this was a class move by the Vikings. Lacey is a veteran who they knew wasn’t going to make the team so they let him go early to give him a chance to catch on with another team.

If the Packers only allow running backs a total of 500 yards this season, they’ll set records.

You’re right though, they’re capable. Especially with Micah Hyde coming up to stuff the run. Nick Perry will be back, Datone Jones should be great.
