Antonio Smith suspended one regular season game

As it turns out, Texans defensive end Antonio Smith is not going to get away with a slap-on-the-wrist preseason suspension.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Smith will be suspended for one week of the regular season in addition to the next two preseason games for swinging a helmet at the helmetless head of Dolphins guard Richie Incognito. A fine is also expected.

Smith and Incognito have a history, and letting Smith off with just two nights off from meaningless games would have made it a meaningless penalty.

Smith told ESPN.com’s Tania Ganguli after the game that he “took a blow to the head. I can’t remember.”

Now, he’ll have plenty of time to reflect to see if he comes up with anything.

  1. What a joke! 2 preseason games he was going to probably play little if any and 1 regular season game for ripping a mans helmet off and using it as a weapon to possibly smash his face in. Probably about an $11k fine as well which is about on par for someone not having their socks pulled up properly. On top of the fact the Texans went low and probably ended someones career. Stay classy Houston.

  2. Normally I wouldn’t advocate intentionally injuring a player, but the moment somebody removes Antonio Smith from the NFL with a chop block the NFL becomes a safer place.

  3. He doesn’t have to reflect, you can count the blows in the video. Incognito instigated it. Again. I still say Incognito should receive the exact same penalty. That’s the way the NFL handled Cortland Finnegan’s dirty assaults against Andre Johnson. When Johnson finally retaliated both players were fined the same $25k.

  4. Imo the dolphins are soft, they have shimmy lineman like Incognito who regularly takes dirty shots. And their complaining about perfectly legal tackles now. Calling them dirty, and complaining or expecting fines or suspensions. Sad, because teams who can’t compete usually take this route and I believe they can compete so this really comes across as whinny.

This is the leagues perception of the dolphins and their fans. I’m no rival or hater, I like the dolphins but this is a bad rap.

  5. Funny how you keep saying Incognito is a dirty player yet Smith is the one that keeps getting the fines and suspensions yet when there are other altercations in football games both players get fined looks like Smith is the only dirty player here.

Funny you keep saying incognito is not a dirty player yet he keeps showing up on NFL Dirtiest Player lists… Thats odd that a survey of his peers would rate him the second dirtiest player behind only Ndamakong Su, yet according to you, he’s an angel.

He’s not only a dirty player, he’s been a dirty player long enough to know how to do exactly what he did, which is bait Smith into an over reaction.

  8. Ask anyone in nfl, he was twisting his ankle last year, trying to eye gauge him this year, dude shoule be in the WWE not the NFL. Incognito is the dirty instigator, its always the retaliation that gets called, deservedly so. Incognito gets away with this crap all the time. somebody on radio just said he was second dirtiest player in NFl next to Suh.

Incognito is the one who knows how to keep from getting caught. It’s always the retaliator that gets in trouble.

Accompanying video to that story showed Incognito twisting Smith’s ankle while on the ground in last year’s game?

Funny that the rest of the world/league didn’t agree with Smith and the Texans homer fans.

Richie has learned how to control himself…. Smith, not so much.
Smith’s dirty player label will now follow him and well deserved.

As a Charger fan looking forward to playing the Texans week 1, I appreciate this.

The loss of Smith won’t help your cause any.

  12. It should be at least 2 reg season games…..the pre-season games are nothing and he wasn’t going to play in the last one anyway….The Texans bragging about all of their character and how they don’t sign folks with questionable character…Cushing 4 games for PED, Brown 4 games for PED, Braman kicked out of 4 colleges for cooking dope, Andre Johnson ripped off Finnegans helmet and was slugging him and now Smith for the 2nd time……..not to mention that LB from Maine who had been tried for murder…….all they do is take Houston and Harris County taxpayers for everything they can and then brag like they paid for it themselves…..

Apparently they did to an extent since Smith’s fine was lowered.

Richie obviously hasn’t learned to control himself, he’s just learned how not to get caught.

  14. All respect for the NFL now gone. Player safety??? What a JOKE!!! This would be attempted murder if it was on the street and not in a “game”. So, according to the NFL you can kick a player in the head while he is laying on the ground and try to inflict EGREGIOUS potentially DEADLY harm to the head with an 8 pound weapon and basically get a 1 game suspension and an $11,000 fine. Goodell should be brought up on charges for negligence and Smith for attempted murder.

  15. Do they take into consideration that it’s against Rich Incognito. Even Richie will tell you he plays on the edges of the rules.

Go away troll – trying to label one of the best franchises in the NFL as some sort of dirty team is just an attempt at failure.

If the Texans are a dirty team, what does that make the Broncos with their off-field issues?

    That’s what I thought.

Did you actually watch the video?

Incognito has his hand underneath Smiths facemask, then he punches Smith in the facemask after which smith has had enough and loses it.

I’ll gladly admit that Antonio lost his cool and deserves to be punished, but Incognito is not without blame here, I don’t care what the league says.

  20. HAHAHA should be 3-4 regular season games but I guess that will have to do Incognito 2 Smith 0

Here is a better stat line:

Miami 0 for 7 against a 10 year old expansion team.

  21. What a joke! This guy should be out for at least the season. They’ll suspend a guy for smoking pot 4-6 games but when it comes to pulling a guys helmet off and using it as a weapon they only suspend him one game? Complete and utter JOKE! That kind of action has no place in the game and sets the worst kind of example.

  22. @seansds3d

What kind of example does trying to gouge someones eyes set…. or punching a player in the face… Does that set a good example? Because I imagine if you’re trying to take the moral high ground here than you’re probably calling for Incognito to get a lengthy suspension as well.

Two wrongs don’t make a right… ever learn that when you were a kid? Play the game the right way and don’t retaliate…or you know…use the guy’s helmet as a weapon that could have killed or seriously injured him… and yes if it was determined Incognito was in the wrong then he should be punished… but taking off someone’s helmet to intentionally use it as a weapon crosses the line. And it’s actually really sad that people on this board can see justification in that action… but I guess I already realized the human race is doomed. LOL!
