Belichick on Amendola: He’s day-to-day

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v New England Patriots Getty Images

Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola missed practice on Monday, which led to questions for coach Bill Belichick on Tuesday about the status of the team’s top receiver.

Anyone expecting a detailed account of why Amendola was out of practice, when he’ll be expected to return and how he’s feeling is going to be disappointed, but they probably shouldn’t have been looking to Belichick for that kind of answer in the first place.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that Belichick said Amendola is day-to-day while avoiding any and all specifics about the nature of the injury. Without more information, that doesn’t sound like a particularly serious concern.

The Patriots play on Thursday against the Lions in their third preseason game of the year, a contest that tends to serve as a dress rehearsal for the regular season. If Amendola’s on the field for the game, there won’t be much to worry about, even with his frequent appearances on injury reports over the course of his career.

    Amendola is a walking-injury…he has great talent, but can’t stay play a season for more than 6 games

  2. ingraven says: Aug 20, 2013 2:22 PM

    He’ll be fine.

  3. brutus9448 says: Aug 20, 2013 2:22 PM

    I’m willing to bet anyone that this guy won’t play in every game this year. He’ll be injured more often than not.

    @brutus

    So he’ll miss 9 games?
    I’ll take that bet.

  6. dochighness says: Aug 20, 2013 2:30 PM

    Should change his name to Dingy Amendola, cause he’s usually dinged up. Get used to this Pats fans.

    On the positive side, Moss is still available, and we all know how he feels about Bill.

    2010 – 16 games
    2011 – 1 game
    2012 – 11 games

    There are plenty of players who’ve played fewer games in the same time frame. And looking at how many guys are already knocked out for the season this year I’ll choose to wait and see how the season actually plays out.

    Belichick is so horrified by the fact that people posting on an internet blog don’t like his personality that I’m told he just suddenly brought practice to a half and cancelled all further practices and games in the preseason so he could go to “touchy feely niceness” counseling and learn how to get people such as yourself to like him.

    Lol

  8. u4iadman says: Aug 20, 2013 2:35 PM

    Brady will likely overthrow him too…just as he did in both SB losses to several WR’s.

    Watch the game again…

  9. dalcow4 says: Aug 20, 2013 2:37 PM

    Doesn’t take a “football genius” to see that there will be plenty “day to day” moments for Amendola this year.

    One thing about Welker is the guy could take a beating week in and week out. Plus, he is good at making guys miss just enough to not get slammed all day long.

    Amendola is a wonderful player but his body simply cannot take what Welker’s took.

    Look– he’s a very good player. But everyone in the league knows he is hurt a lot. Why act as if he isn’t? Just admit the obvious and wish him well.

  19. descendency says: Aug 20, 2013 2:51 PM

    Until something more serious is rumored, I’m going to believe it was a day off for Amendola, who just ripped the Bucs a new one. Belichick does that for players occasionally and then will call them “day to day”.

  21. godofwine330 says: Aug 20, 2013 3:03 PM

    They call him Mr. Glass. They are going to suffer for Belichick’s arrogance in low balling Welker. They think that Brady can win with scrubs, totally undervaluing what Welker did and could still do. When Amendola gets hurt, and the scrubs drop wide open passes or run the wrong routes leading to interceptions The Arrogant Hoodie will be to blame. You know the one that hasn’t won a title since Spy Gate. #AeneasWilliamsShouldHaveARing

    I don’t know enough about the Rams in those years as to who their other receivers were and why he didn’t start more games.

    If you want to make that sort of comparison though, lets look at Welker before he came to the Pats -

    2004 – 1 game played, no starts w/Chargers
    2005 – 14 games played, no starts w/Miami
    2006 – 16 games played, 1 start w/Miami
    2007 – 16 games played, 2 starts w/Miami

    Wonder why that was ? I’d say because Belichick saw things in Welker that no one else did. Welker killed that Pats in several games while he was with Miami and Bill knew he was a starter and not a scrub. I’ll take a leap of faith that he sees the same sort of things in Amendola.

    @unbias,

    Generalities allow people to make blanket statements like you did that are untrue.

    I always say if you don’t like a team or players that’s fine, we all have other teams and players we dislike. But at least know the facts of what you’re talking about so your criticism is valid rather than manufactured.

  23. ampats says: Aug 20, 2013 3:09 PM

    @dalcow4

    Wonder why that is?

    Maybe because in 2009 Amendola entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent.

    That’s why

  24. thirtyrackdash says: Aug 20, 2013 3:09 PM

    You can’t even look at it via number of games missed.

    Amendola hurt his elbow week 1 and missed 15 games on the IR. No elbow problems since. He then missed a couple games with a shoulder injury and a couple with a foot injury the next season but finished the season a starter.

    Welker blew out his knee and went on the IR but it was the last week of the season so he missed few games. However, he then missed the first game of the next year, was questionable all year, and only had 86 catches. He’s also been battling and ankle injury.

    I’ll take the WR with the surgically repaired arm over the surgivally repaired leg all day. Especially if he’s FIVE years younger.

  25. brobroski says: Aug 20, 2013 3:13 PM

    @dalcow4, that last comment of yours means zilch. Football isn’t like other sports where your starters play most of the game. WR, TE, & RBs are in and out of the game routinely from down to down based on play calling. Unbias fan said “played” not “started” in his first comment. Take a lap.

  26. realfootballfan says: Aug 20, 2013 3:15 PM

    This guy is made of glass. No way he plays 16 games.

  27. xxsweepthelegxx says: Aug 20, 2013 3:19 PM

    @godofwine330

    Do some homework, go look at some of the contract talks over the last two years and you’ll see welker was offered more than fair market value for his services. In fact, he took less money with the Broncos this year than the Pats offered him LAST year. He misread the market and clashed personalities with Bill, that sums up why he isn’t here. He’ll do fine with another HOF QB throwing to him, I wish him luck, I always liked Wes.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Because he is a slot receiver and slot guys are not generally listed as starters.

  29. 80sbroncofan says: Aug 20, 2013 3:39 PM

    Amendola is a very good replacement for Welker. Same skill set, almost the same build. Amendola is younger than Welker. Only issue for Amendola is that he can’t stay healthy. That is the reason why the Rams would not sign him to a mega deal.

  30. thelegendofteabaggervance says: Aug 20, 2013 3:54 PM

    A lot of arguing over whether Amendola can stay healthy. Personally, I don’t think he can, nor do I think he will. But I also don’t think it will matter that much to the Pats attack, because Julian Edelman proved himself to be Wes Welker 2.0 when given the opportunity, leading me to wonder why the Pats went after Amendola to begin with.

    My prediction: Amendola will NOT PLAY (that’s PLAY, not START) in more than 12 games this season, possibly PLAYING (once again that’s PLAYING, not STARTING) in as few as 4, and Edelman will prove his utility WHEN (that’s WHEN, not IF) the time comes.

  31. ColtsWinColtsWin!! says: Aug 20, 2013 4:16 PM

    Certain QB’s throw the ball…and get their receivers killed..ie St Louis.

    Premier QB’s throw the ball where their receivers can not only catch it…but to not get lit up…Amendola is now playing w/a QB who will not set him up for the big hit like he got in St Louis….Look for him to reach Welker type numbers, the guy can play, and highly feared in NFL.

    Lombardi, Landry, Halas…. all escaped today’s media scrutiny frenzy. I loved Vince, but no way he runs anything today like he did with the Packers back in the 60s.
    Bill Walsh’s 49ers have salary cap violations that cost the team a few draft picks.
