Eagles name Michael Vick their starting quarterback

Michael Vick AP

Michael Vick is the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly made it official on Tuesday, declaring that he had seen enough to believe that Vick is the man to run his offense.

Kelly said Vick and Nick Foles had a “healthy competition” but that he determined Vick was far enough ahead that it was time to name him the starter. Kelly said Foles took the news well, and Kelly praised Foles for his professionalism.

But while Kelly likes what he has seen from Foles, he loves what he has seen from Vick. Kelly said that Vick doesn’t need to look over his shoulder or worry about getting benched, because the Eagles are committed to Vick. He’s the man who will run Chip Kelly’s offense this year.

  30. jaredo10 says: Aug 20, 2013 11:37 AM

True American story. The day April 20th when vick was found guilty and sentenced, he wins back his job. The land of second chances. Got to love this country

  31. alphaq2 says: Aug 20, 2013 11:39 AM

Wow, the number one overall pick of his draft is starting over a third round pick. Shocking! As a Skins fan I really wanted Foles to win the job. Vick can be a nightmare to deal with when he is on.

  35. goldensuneagle says: Aug 20, 2013 11:41 AM

Shame, I knew Vick was going to win the job, but I would have much rather seen Foles have it. Aside from a few errant mistakes made early (I believe on the first drives?), he corrected them the following drive and led the team downfield for a touchdown in both games. I think Foles would be better to wear a team out than Vick simply because he would be more efficient in longer drives to force the defense to be a part of more plays.

Oh well, Vick HAS looked good and definitely played better, but it IS the preseason…

  36. petehemlock says: Aug 20, 2013 11:42 AM

And the Eagles win the NFC East with 10 wins.

  40. nceaglesfan says: Aug 20, 2013 11:46 AM

Did Chip “really” have a choice?

  45. deinoslogos says: Aug 20, 2013 11:55 AM

Wait until he faces some disguised schemes and complex blitzes. Then we’ll see him running around like a pitbull being electro-shcoked, throwing the ball into double coverages and taking massive hits. Great, then we get to see him do that hero thing where he slowly gets up, limps back to the huddle and continues to play and make mistakes at 25%.

  46. doctorart2013 says: Aug 20, 2013 12:02 PM

It’s a no brainer, Kelly wanted Vick to run the up tempo, read option to utilize Kelly’s offense in his first NFL season. Why else keep him if he wasn’t gone to get the first crack at it.

  47. steelerben says: Aug 20, 2013 12:07 PM

He completed the highest percentage of passes, and high completion percentage is number one on Chip’s list of qualifiers. He’s mobile. Which is number two.

We will see what he looks like when teams are game planning for him and bringing blitz packages. Vick’s ability to read a defense has always been his downfall. However, if they run the offense at the tempo they’d like it makes it hard to put out anything but a vanilla defense.

Either way, they better put up a ton of points because that defense couldn’t stop a running tap.

  48. channelguy says: Aug 20, 2013 12:07 PM

Until he gets hurt, or has a classic Vickian four turnover game.

I’ll be interested to see how a QB who has never been perceived as particularly bright on or off the field handles an offense which requires quick and effective decision making by the QB.

  49. 509seahawks says: Aug 20, 2013 12:09 PM

This just in: Vick refuses to throw to Riley Cooper.

  50. 509seahawks says: Aug 20, 2013 12:10 PM

And how did Barkley take the news that he wasn’t going to be the starter?

  51. EJ says: Aug 20, 2013 12:11 PM

I think everyone who follows the sport seen this one coming. Foles is a decent QB, but doesn’t have what it takes to run Chip Kelly’s Offense. Vick is more than capable of running Kelly’s Offense, he just needs to take it easier when it comes to running outside of the pocket, he is becoming somewhat fragile these days.

The fast paced Offense is going to be real rough on their Offensive Lineman, especially their Tackles. Something tells me that Fantasy Footballers should look to take the Defense of one of the teams that gets to play Kelly’s Offense twice a year. By the third quarter, most one on one battles will be easily had by opposing Defense’s. I almost guarantee that the Eagle Offense will be one of the top offenders of giving up sacks this season. Good luck Mr. Vick.

  52. chaseutley says: Aug 20, 2013 12:14 PM

A mediocre division, playing three AFC West cream-puffs this season, as well as the Bucs, Lions, Cardinals, Vikings, and Bears…………………

The playoffs are not an impossibility for the Eagles.

Yeah, their defense will stink, but I don’t see too many offenses on their schedule that will be able to hang with their offensive output.

    Until Vick gets hurt.

  59. bradybbgoat says: Aug 20, 2013 12:28 PM

Its too bad Chip can’t follow Vick on the field to help him read the defense at the line of scrimmage.

Vick will succeed if Chip makes all the right playcalls from the sideline: plenty of run plays mixed with throws on which there is a low chance of being intercepted.

Everyone knows if Vick has to sit back in the pocket and make all the throws the Eagles are screwed. Just ask Andy Reid.

  60. captrtp says: Aug 20, 2013 12:29 PM

Chip will find out old Vick is to stupid to read complex defenses and will hesitate and throw picks. Foles is a lot smarter and less of a risk. Vick still has a god like ego thinking he can play like Montana or Young ( Steve not the idiot Vince) he will be his own worst enemy

  67. tackledummy1505 says: Aug 20, 2013 1:05 PM

Philly fans are some of the most intelligent sports fans around. That has been a comment made by a lot of sports writers and players. I’m from Philly and I’m a Philly sports fan, this competition was for the QB who could win this year. Chip wants to make an impact this year. He may not be thinking about a Super Bowl game today, but he wants everyone to buy into his scheme and the only way to do that is by winning as many games as he can this year. Your QB 3 years from now is 3rd on the depth chart today. Any smart fan knows that’s when a coaches full plan is in full swing. If the Eagles make the playoffs this year they will try to win it all, if not then the buy-in for the scheme will still be put into motion. Barkley is still their intended plan for the future and both Vick and Foles were QBs that could help Chip’s plan be implimented

vick is a top 5 QB with his career on the line and his back against the wall. he is by far thr most gifted athlete to ever play the pos his downfall is when he is content hes lazy brained and not comitted. kelly knows this and found the best solution put his job in jeopardy as long as possible to keep his focus and implant the offense in his mind. it might have been a good idea to wait another week but media would have ate him up. well done coach

As I’ve said so, so, so many times before:

This really wasn’t a QB competition. It was a publicity stunt! It showed everyone how incredibly good the offensive scheme was by bringing attention to this made-up controversy. And it worked! You all paid attention and saw how fast and fun the offense was. You saw how two different quarterbacks can run it and make it their own. It was something else.

From a marketing perspective, Chip Kelly is very, very smart! He sold the sizzle!

I’m not sure if the statement that any fan base is smarter than any other one is any more uneducated than the nonsense you just posted. What is ignorant is to ignore Vick also killing the careers of Jim Mora Jr & Dan Reeves. Then we can bring Andy into it. Also what’s ignorant is ignoring how Vick has NEVER gotten it done, not in Philly or Atlanta. Go back & look at this stats from the Falcons. Do a little research before calling others unaware. McNabb was being bad mouthed long before he ever left the field. Ok he has no rings but what WR’s did he ever have?? TO for one year was it. Do you all really believe JJ’s defense had no part in the losses?? Why does this city revere Buddy big mouth Ryan & hate Reid?? Do the people in Buffalo treat Jim Kelly & Levy as Philly treats Reid & McNabb? Of course not.

As for being clueless about a city, your city is a hole. You can’t even come to your stadium with an opposing teams shirt without getting beat up for nothing, I was there for the GB playoff game in 2010 & the things that were done to opposing fans were criminal. Just like those policemen from NY over the winter that got beat up for wearing Ranger jerseys at that winter classic. How about intentionally puking on other fans kids? Now tell us all the lore about Santa is untrue too. I know, you are all tired of hearing about it. Philly fans are too intelligent to ever do the things Philly fans are world famous for.

Have you heard the nonsense that comes out of McNabbs mouth the last 2-3 years? Do you think that JUST started?

JJ’s defense MAY have had a ROLE in later year playoff losses, but was the MAIN reason for the early success. Go back and watch the 03 NFC Champ game. McNabb picked off 4 times, and put 3 points on the board. Defense held Carolina to 14 pts, pretty good considering 4 int’s.

McNabb and Reid were treated fine in Philly. Its the lunatic fringe that is often the loudest, but is also a minority.
