Gerald McCoy is getting sick of the Josh Freeman bashing

As the Buccaneers prepare for what could be a make-or-break season for quarterback Josh Freeman, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy would like to see folks take a break from bashing the 2009 first-round pick.

“I think the reason I’m so sensitive about [the Freeman bashing] is because I got it for two years,” McCoy told reporters on Tuesday, via JoeBucsFan.com.  “They talked bad about me for two years.  So, it’s like, I don’t take to well to it when they talk about my teammates.

“He had a real good year.  People give him so much scrutiny.  I’m like, ‘Man, you all got to relax.  Like, calm down, man.’  They just, I think he gets treated unfairly a lot.  Like I said, to me, it’s a sensitive area because, you know, I got it for two years.  Actually still get it.”

McCoy never got it as bad as Freeman.  Most recently, Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton teed off on Freeman, explaining that the fifth-year player has had plenty of chances to show that he can play, and that Freeman has so far failed.

He just plays God awful.  And that’s who you are, right?” Tarkenton told WDAE radio on Tuesday morning, via JoeBucsFan.com.  “Josh Freeman has proven to me that he can’t play.”

Tarkenton thinks the Bucs are giving rookie Mike Glennon a chance to take the job from Freeman, who has yet to perform at a high level on a consistent basis.

How long has Freeman been in Tampa, he came in the same draft class as Sanchez and he is being pushed out 2, they suck and thats it, time to move on…

Josh Freeman = Jason Campbell w/Redskins … Will always show just enough to wonder how good he can be, but the reality is… He is what he is & won’t really get any better… EVER.

Three quarterbacks were drafted in the first round of the 2009 draft. Here are their stats, best to worst (by QB rating):

    59.8% comp – 12,807 yds – 80 TD – 54 INT – 82.8 rating

    58.8 % comp – 12,963 yds – 78 TD – 63 INT – 79.8 rating

    55.1 % comp – 12,092 yds – 68 TD – 69 INT – 71.7 rating

The first stat line is Matt Stafford, who was just given a contract as a franchise QB. The last is Mark Sanchez, who is looking at the bench (deservedly). The middle is Josh Freeman, who is 1% completion, 2TD, and 9 INT off of Stafford’s pace with 156 more yards. Maybe everyone should cut the kid a little slack.

  9. bucrightoff says: Aug 20, 2013 4:34 PM

Here are the QBs in the last 25 years who have at least a 4:1 TD to INT ratio in a full season with 25TDs.

    Tom Brady
    Aaron Rodgers
    Brett Favre
    Peyton Manning
    Josh Freeman

That would be the list. He’s insanely inconsistent, no doubt. But he’s not god awful, not in a league where Mark Sanchez and Blaine Gabbert are starters.

What is absurd is people in Tampa who jump in line with Fran. For a guy who “can’t play,” how did he ever lead the Bucs to a 10 win season in 2010?

And how is it that 4 defensive stops would have produced an 11-5 record last year? The possibilities are amazing for a QB who can’t play.

Nevermind that he was in the top 10 last year for td’s and yardage. Nevermind that the Bucs were a top 10 offense, in 2012. What an accomplishment for a team with a QB who can’t play, he said sarcastically!

  11. goldandcrimson68 says: Aug 20, 2013 4:38 PM

Oh and I ironically, some of the same fans who back Fran , would love to have Timmy under center. LOL!

    Go ‘Noles!

new coaches have this belief that they have to turn over the entire roster to make it ‘their team’.

They should have traded Josh in the offseason if they didn’t want to keep him. Plenty of teams would have given up a good pick or two for him; Jags, Cards, Raiders, Jets all come to mind looking to improve the QB position this offseason.

  13. truthb3t0ld says: Aug 20, 2013 4:43 PM

Hasn’t stafford missed a bunch of games though? Obviously that doesn’t have any bearing on completion percentage, but it does on the TD number. Stafford also has the best WR in football.

I agree freeman isn’t as bad as people say but your stats are slightly flawed….you fail to mention Stafford has played 12
less games than freeman with 9 less interceptions

  15. jacktheraven says: Aug 20, 2013 4:48 PM

QB bashing? Get used to it. It happens to Rodgers, Ryan, Flacco, etc. It’s part of the game. I though they would lighten up on Flacco. It hasn’t happened.

  16. forerunner00 says: Aug 20, 2013 4:49 PM

steelerben, Nice Try! A swing and miss. Stafford missed 19 games in his first two seasons. Which makes you realize how terrible Sanchize and Freesux really are.

How about you actually accomplish something more than finishing 16 games before you act like you have a platform to be offended from Gerry McTore-My-Biceps, Jr.?

By the way, instead of worrying about Freeman, you ought to be “sensitive” about how Tom Brady torched your fannies last week. Your Defense’s pass rush should be nicknamed “The Wilted Lettuce.”

And don’t start crying about “haters.” You’ve got nothing on tape other than a high draft pick. You have not arrived at 7-9. If Warren Sapp went 7-9, somebody got cussed at. You guys weep just for finishing a schedule. Pathetic.

Josh Freeman? More like Morgan Freeman with the way he’s been throwing the ball recently.

  19. kinggator says: Aug 20, 2013 4:54 PM

Stafford also has the best WR in the league, probably evens out though.

  20. finfogducker says: Aug 20, 2013 5:03 PM

No QB has more INTs over the last two years than Josh Freeman. In that time he has also lost 13 fumbles. This isn’t FF. Turnovers lose games.

His best year statistically (combination of completion % and TD/INT) was 2010. His 2011 completion percent was slightly higher but the TD/INT ratio was killer.

For a young player it is not a good sign when your best year was two years ago and your most recent stats pale in comparison.

Something has gone wrong here in Tampa.

If I were GM I wouldn’t extend him yet either, and I’d be looking at Glennon pretty hard.

He is still only 25….this is the first time he has run the same system 2 years in a row. He set franchise records for TD’s and Yards in 2012. He carried the team to 10 wins in 2010. For a 5 game stretch in 2013 he was the hottest QB in the league….inconsistent yes…..god awful…..that’s just rediculous.

Josh is fine. He may not be Brady but at least he isn’t Cassel, Sanchez or Smith.

  27. bucforever says: Aug 20, 2013 6:35 PM

Yeah Freeman has been inconsistent. Maybe that’s because in the last four years he has had no consistency in his coaching staff! All I want to say is that he will be the hottest free agent QB on the market if the Bucs let him go!

  28. NotoriousKDV says: Aug 20, 2013 6:37 PM

caldwellsinnerstache, bucrightoff said a full season with 25 TDs. Garrard only had 18 TD’s and only played 12 games that year.

  29. dubblelznhell says: Aug 20, 2013 6:51 PM

Try throwing to receivers on TB other than Williams. He threw for over 4000 yards last year didn’t he?

Brett Favre was pretty inconsistent. He’d have great years and bad ones with 20 picks.

  30. thereyougo2 says: Aug 20, 2013 7:30 PM

I don’t get it. Watching Freeman on Red Zone or highlights he looks better than average. Not much of a team around him and he’s played for three coaches so far and two of them got fired. I like to see him come to Philadelphia in 2014.

  31. evilglazers666 says: Aug 20, 2013 8:07 PM

I’m pretty sure that Schiano and the Glazers were the ones encouraging the bashing of Josh Freeman, so they wouldn’t have to pay him a new contract. Now they need to lay low, because they may have been too optimistic thinking that Glennon on the rookie deal was going to help them compete in the NFC South. They will likely just ride out the season. Finish 8-8. (pretty good impovement) and blame Josh Freeman for not winning the Super Bowl. After that they will again, fire the entire staff and add to the 20% of Tampa residents that they already have fired since they bought the team.

    Dear Fran Tarkenton,

You got in to the HOF because you outran the defense. That is it. You were never a great passer, never a great team leader, you just ran. You are not qualified to judge any NFL quarterback. Freeman beats you in every category for your first four years. Research the facts, Bigmouth, before you really humiliate yourself.

    Sincerely,

    A Josh Freeman believer

    steelerben, fumbleprone,forerunner00

Just to even it out a little bit more, Freeman has made 1,873 passing attempts and Stafford has mad 1,863 passing attempts.

Freeman is not a top 5 QB and probably will never be a guy that carries a team like Brees, Rodgers, or Peyton Manning. But with a solid team around him, he can win. He can manage the game, and provide big plays when asked to do so. He can be Eli Manning or Ben Roethlisberger.

To Buccaneers fans: After looking at your teams quarterback history, it seems obvious to me that Mr. Freeman is the best one you guys have ever had. I’m pretty sure Tony Dungy would still be coaching if Freeman was his QB instead of Dilfer, King and Johnson. If I were you, I’d put my concerns toward the defensive ends, Carl Nicks, and your $16M a year cornerback coming off a major knee surgery, but that’s just me.

  36. steelerben says: Aug 21, 2013 8:08 AM

I do understand that Stafford missed several games. However, if you look at the number of passes attempted:

    Josh Freeman – 1873
    Mark Sanchez – 1867
    Matt Stafford – 1863

You can see that they are all within 10 attempts of each other, which means the statistics are more balanced. Let us not also forget that Stafford is throwing to a guy that is arguably the best receiver in the game.

I’m not saying that Freeman is ever going to be in a Hall of Fame discussion, but I think we could all lighten up on him a bit.

  37. whysomanylosers says: Aug 21, 2013 10:09 AM

It was pointed out that ole HOF-er Fran had nearly identical stats as Freeman though his first 4 years (and never got much better)…

I hope Josh does better this year, but the o-line has not played well, at all.

  38. h8glazersgobucs says: Aug 21, 2013 10:29 AM

Schiano was the one who was not on board with Freeman. The Glazers had NFL . com take the article down, but you can still find it on third party sites.
