Report: Antonio Smith suspension could come in regular season

JJ Watt, Antonio Smith AP

There was a report late on Monday that Texans defensive end Antonio Smith would be suspended by the league for up to two preseason games as punishment for using a helmet as a weapon against Dolphins guard Richie Incognito.

For a veteran like Smith, a suspension that allows him to skip two preseason games sounds like the same level of punishment as sending someone to prison on the night of their mother-in-law’s birthday dinner. That may explain why Ed Werder of ESPN is reporting that the league is considering whether to suspend Smith from one or more regular season games as a result of his actions. Smith is also expected to be fined.

According to Werder, the league is discussing whether it is “appropriate” to suspend Smith and force him to forfeit game checks for an incident that took place in the preseason. For a league that suspended Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor for the way he navigated the end of his collegiate career, it seems strange that such a distinction would matter in the least in the face of an attack by Smith that could have done serious damage to Incognito.

When you add in the past history between the two men from the first game of last season, anything other than a regular season suspension would barely qualify as a punishment.

Incognito is a dirt bag. Antonio Smith took the bait – again – and is a fool.

That wasn’t part of a football player. That was criminal. Whether or not he sits in the regular season should not even be in question. The real issue is for how long. The preseason argument is crap. Guys get suspended all the time for stuff in the off-season. This guy was just the first one dumb enough to do something like that in a preseason game. Anything less than 4 games (reg) is wrong

LOL have fun watching games at home smith. Lo ser.

Seems to me the guy swinging the helmet is the dirtbag.

    It should.

Agreed. Cant justify Smith swinging a helmet but Incognito is a scumbag and a dirty player, Smith just lost his cool

Antonio Smith should be given a bonus for spearing a dirtbag like Incognito. He even makes Suh look like an angel in comparison.

That said, suspending someone for the preseason is just a crock of crud.

when suh “stomped” on packers guard dietrich-smith, did it matter whether or not dietrich-smith instigated? no, not one bit. you can’t stomp on, kick, cleat, etc another player. doesn’t matter if said player is dirty, nice, or whatever.

you also can’t use someone’s helmet as a weapon. i’ve seen guys rip each other’s helmet off before, and that’s worth a fine, at most. but taking a swing at a guy using the helmet? whatever incognito did, it doesn’t absolve smith. he deserves a suspension AND a “dirty” label.

the logic of this happening in preseason and shouldn’t affect regular season is absurd. many players do things in the off season and they get suspended for the regular season.

I am a Texans fan and both should be suspended. NFL keep let Incognito get away with his actions. He is going to hurt someone

Pryor is a Raider. The league has a whole different and more severe way of dealing with Raiders. Infact, if you want to compare him to any Raider, he should serve no penalty and be applauded for attempting to hurt a dirtbag like Incognito. Remember the “Tuck Rule”….

Incognito is a bum, but there is no excuse for trying to take his head off with his helmet. As a texans fan i hope his suspension is just for preseason

Haynesworth got 5 games for stomping a guys head. I hate Haynesworth but in my mind this is almost just as bad & could’ve caused a worse injury. 2 preseason games doesn’t even qualify as a slap on the wrist, its less than that. Should be 3-5 regular season games.

If you watch the video, Incognito clearly grabs Smith’s facemask, doesn’t let it go, and then pushes or punches Smith with his right hand.

It’s always the retaliator that gets in trouble, but this is another example of how a player can play dirty and get away with it.

If you’re a fellow Olineman w/ Incognito you love it. Until he gets a 15 yrd unsportsmanlike. However just imagine how much dirty junk he does and says to make Antonio Smith hate him this much. Every team has that guy that chirps, blocks thru (proper) and after the whistle (annoying but not really frowned upon). Cheap shots you walking back to the huddle, but Incognito must take it to another level.

Antonio Smith is in need of a ‘cool-down.’ Watch him get into a fight with Cushing, his own teammate.

    Out of Control.

Furthermore, in that first video. Incognito didn’t do anything that dirty. Tripping…seriously…tripping? That is a penalty, but hardly a major assault. In the heat of the moment, with a loose ball like that, I probably would have swung my leg out to try and kick that ball like Richie did. You guys don’t play sports do you?

Obviously you don’t either if you think all he was doing was tripping Smith.

    Already came down….

2 Preseason games and 1 reg season game.

    Appropriate if you ask me.

The bottom line is only a punk would hit another player in the head with a helmet, guy could had lose an eye, players are always talking trash and playing to beat the other guy, however only a punk would do this. Bill

  22. 1phillyphan says: Aug 20, 2013 4:08 PM

FINE and SUSPEND both. There is no place in the NFL for actions like this…criminal is the word the NFL should be using. If anybody outside the NFL did that to a person..It would be jail time. Agreed Incognito has been a dirty player taking cheap shots for years, but it doesn’t justify getting hit in the head with a blunt object. Smith could have seriously hurt even killed him.
