Diehl to miss six week after thumb surgery

David Carr, David Diehl AP

Upon further review, the Giants aren’t going to be using David Diehl at guard, at least for the next month and a half.

The Giants just announced the veteran offensive lineman will have surgery this afternoon to “repair his unstable right thumb.”

Diehl practiced Tuesday with a cast on his hand, but more tests confirmed that surgery was required. He’s expected to miss six weeks.

That throws the Giants line into flux for the start of the regular season. Center David Baas is still hoping to be back for the opener after his knee injury, but left guard Kevin Boothe is working there in the interim. First-rounder Justin Pugh was going to replace Diehl at right tackle as part of the shuffling, and will have a chance to make that job his own now.

Sounds like Cordle will have to play center, Boothe will move back over to LG, and Pugh will have to play RT.

Pugh has to be better than Diehl at this point.

Diehl is a warrior, but in pass protection, the man is a turnstile.

Week 1 is going to be battle of the Olines as the Cowboys O-line is depleted along with the Giants…17-14 Cowboys!

Ya week 1 isn’t going to be pretty. I’m not sure if the cowboys will win (cowboys fan here), but both teams have a very formidable pass rush, and it looks like neither team will have a quality o.line that week.

The only difference is romo will be blamed for his sacks

That’s not promising. Cordle is awful. I think they’ll move both to center and find someone else to play G from within or after cuts.

Sorry but losing Dhiel is addition by subtraction. Dhiel was great back in the day but now he’s as effective as a tackling dummy would be out there. Heck the dummy would probably work better someone might trip over it.

Blessing in disguise. Dhiel looked like garbage against Colts. Werner looks like a good pick.

2015 can’t come fast enough with all this rebuilding going on. At least with Eli’s arm getting ‘tired’ all of the time, he won’t have a chance to throw it down the field, thus preserving his arm. Win-win.
