Upon further review, the Giants aren’t going to be using David Diehl at guard, at least for the next month and a half.

The Giants just announced the veteran offensive lineman will have surgery this afternoon to “repair his unstable right thumb.”

Diehl practiced Tuesday with a cast on his hand, but more tests confirmed that surgery was required. He’s expected to miss six weeks.

That throws the Giants line into flux for the start of the regular season. Center David Baas is still hoping to be back for the opener after his knee injury, but left guard Kevin Boothe is working there in the interim. First-rounder Justin Pugh was going to replace Diehl at right tackle as part of the shuffling, and will have a chance to make that job his own now.
