Report: Richie Incognito punched, knocked out a hotel security guard

Richie Incognito AP

Dolphins guard Richie Incognito has a reputation as a dirty player on the field. He may also be facing trouble for a hit off the field.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Incognito punched and knocked out a hotel security guard in an incident before the start of training camp. Schefter cites one unnamed person who knows Incognito as saying that Incognito was punched first.

Schefter reports that the Dolphins know about the incident, and he quotes an unnamed source saying, “they’ve done everything to bury it.”

The hotel’s security cameras caught the incident, but the video has apparently not been turned over to police or to the NFL. The incident could constitute a violation of the league’s personal-conduct policy, but if the video remains under wraps and Incognito isn’t charged, it’s unlikely that he would be in any trouble with the NFL.

    I’m shocked!

  8. bucrightoff says: Aug 21, 2013 3:34 PM

    They should just rename personal fouls to “Incognitos”

  9. floratiotime says: Aug 21, 2013 3:34 PM

    If you’re a huge, superbly conditioned professional football player you have to be a complete coward to takedown a hotel ‘mall cop’. I bet he pushes women around too.

    well, he’s no choir boy.

    Maybe Antonio smith is a security guard

  12. marvsleezy says: Aug 21, 2013 3:36 PM

    But, Incognito did NOT hit him with his helmet – So its ok:)

  13. iluvbears says: Aug 21, 2013 3:36 PM

    When you look up the definition of “roid rage” in the dictionary they have a picture of Incognito.

  14. hehateme2 says: Aug 21, 2013 3:38 PM

    Oh boy… this should bring out the Texas whiners Big Time!

  15. jnbnet says: Aug 21, 2013 3:39 PM

    No matter wher this guy goes, he won’t be incognito.

  16. vincentbojackson says: Aug 21, 2013 3:40 PM

    Learned to really hate this guy after watching his tired act on Hard Knocks last year.

    Guy clearly has issues.

  18. bsaleen12 says: Aug 21, 2013 3:41 PM

    I love how Dolphin fans can running to defend this piece of trash. He shouldn’t have been in that preseason game! Free Antonio!!!!

  19. godolphins133499 says: Aug 21, 2013 3:42 PM

    Man Antonio Smith, would get his hankey pushed in!! #Go Richie #GO FINS

  20. texanfan53 says: Aug 21, 2013 3:44 PM

    So poor little Richie was just “defending himself” ? Oh how the worm turns!

  21. raider8er says: Aug 21, 2013 3:46 PM

    If he only did while he was incognito.

    Get it? Incognito is also his name! Nuk, Nuk, Nuk!!

  22. nflcrimerankingscom says: Aug 21, 2013 3:47 PM

    Should be Richie Cognito, as everyone recognizes an obese NFL player that bullies others. That’s worth 1 crime point to Miami.

  23. rayfinkleisonehellofamodelamerican says: Aug 21, 2013 3:49 PM

    So, he is just supposed to let the guy hit him in the face and not defend himself?

    To all you Antonio Smith defenders, he used his fist…not a deadly weapon (unless Incognito has recently had to register his hands as deadly weapons)

  24. myeaglescantwin says: Aug 21, 2013 3:50 PM

    did you know NJ has no “self defense” statue..
    So if i get hit, i can have assault charges pressed on me for defending myself..

    even if the guy spits on my girl and missed his first punch at me,,
    I get hollered at for the brand new face he needs and that tailpipe tattoo he has now.

    thumbs down for that

  25. xpensivewinos says: Aug 21, 2013 3:51 PM

    Coach Philbin, Idiot Ireland, I have Chad Johnson holding on line one for you……

  26. thegreatgabbert says: Aug 21, 2013 3:54 PM

    It might have been another person using Rich’s name at the club because he wanted to conceal his own identity. That happens to him a lot.

  27. jwil007 says: Aug 21, 2013 3:54 PM

    How does this ID 10 T get away time and time again????? Interesting………….

  28. tommynatorii says: Aug 21, 2013 3:54 PM

    Funny how this comes out after Smith gets suspended. BSPN playing favorites? Maybe.
    Maurice Jones Drew was caught on tape, and still no charges, no NFL punishment.
    Ritchie is a football player, tough and aggressive, he is not the smartest guy around.

  29. floridafootballologist says: Aug 21, 2013 3:57 PM

    Will the hotel not turn over the tape because it does show their employee swinging first? Check with Belicheck. He may already have a copy.

  30. granadafan says: Aug 21, 2013 3:57 PM

    Are they sure it wasn’t Maurice Jones Drew instead?

  31. prplyaz25 says: Aug 21, 2013 3:59 PM

    He was defending himself if it was not the case they would have to turn it over the authorities which means hotel is hiding something.

  32. 69finfan says: Aug 21, 2013 4:02 PM

    I read the guy called him Shirley. Richie doesn’t like that.

  33. prplyaz25 says: Aug 21, 2013 4:02 PM

    Previous post its obvious Richie was defending himself if you were an employee and you were knocked out by an NFL player best believe I will lawyer up to sue that player something is not adding up.

  34. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Aug 21, 2013 4:02 PM

    Anytime a man resorts to physical violence against another man, it’s a clear indicator he’s afraid of something and cannot muster enough courage to process the conflict as a grown up.

    At least that’s what Dr Phil said one time. I think

  35. allidoiswin55 says: Aug 21, 2013 4:04 PM

    Just to be clear smith didn’t hit incognito with the helmet, he tried but gave up half way through it. Incognito is a punk and always has been. He should be equally fined or suspended.

    Funny how the dolphins staff sent in this tape and now their player gets suspended. Haha I sweat they are are stupid haha. Guess whinging does not pay off dolphins.

    Go seahawks.

    To all you Antonio Smith defenders, he used his fist…not a deadly weapon (unless Incognito has recently had to register his hands as deadly weapons)
    ———————————————————-

    So Smith is supposed to let him grab his mask and wrench his neck, try to twist his ankle until it breaks, bite him on the leg…..and not try to defend himself?

    Cog should have been suspended for assault and not even be in that game

  39. whodatsaybaby says: Aug 21, 2013 4:11 PM

    Waiting on the suspensions, Godell.. Oh wait, you just suspend incredible evidence and not actual facts or footage. Sorry I forgot.. Moving on….

  40. fosteraustralianfortouchdown says: Aug 21, 2013 4:11 PM

    He should be banned for a year, he could have murdered him, thats what Mia fans were calling for on Antonio. Thats assualt toss him in jail

    Since when is a helmet a “deadly weapon”?

  42. bradshawlives says: Aug 21, 2013 4:17 PM

    “if the video remains under wraps and Incognito isn’t charged, it’s unlikely that he would be in any trouble with the NFL.”

    Since when does the NFL need a video to dish out punishment? If Goodell thinks he did it…he’ll be disciplined.

  43. FinFan68 says: Aug 21, 2013 4:18 PM

    If he did it (likely due to the mention of video evidence) and it was not in a legit self-defense scenario (highly doubtful) then he needs to sit a game or two (if not longer). My guess is that he was asked to leave for one reason or another and refused. Security responds to escort him out and he swings. Punk move if that’s what happened. The troubling thing for me is “they’ve done everything to bury it.” Not cool. I can see not wanting it to be public (from the team’s and hotel’s perspectives) but there should have at least been an investigation of some sort by the team even if the guy doesn’t press charges. I’m not saying #68 was definitely the instigator but it is not hard to believe that. If they find him in the wrong, then notify the league with what the team’s disciplinary actions would be. If not acceptable, the league could have taken responsibility from the Dolphins and issued punishment at the league level. The only one to blame is #68 if he was in the wrong. I know that the o-line is having some issues with a couple of guys but Richie is solid. That said, he is also outspoken and doesn’t seem to be a favorite of Philbin. If there is a viable option at LG then he could be released on the final cut–pro-bowl or not.

    too funny
    this just out incognito picks on old ladys

    Another video for the Goodell fireplace.

  46. razzlejag says: Aug 21, 2013 4:23 PM

    Richie has never been a model citizen. It’s only a matter of time before a serious incident finds him.

  47. fosteraustralianfortouchdown says: Aug 21, 2013 4:30 PM

    I wonder if miami will send this film to the NFL?

  48. whatnojets says: Aug 21, 2013 4:32 PM

  49. ibreathefootball says: Aug 21, 2013 4:39 PM

    I mean does this come as any surprise? Even Suh didn’t get kicked off Nebraska, but Incognito was!

  50. rayfinkleisonehellofamodelamerican says: Aug 21, 2013 4:40 PM

    I used to not mind the Texans, I kinda wanted to see them do well, but since this whole incident happened it shows how stupid and classless their fans really are.

    If someone is grabbing your facemask and wrenching your neck…punch him in the gut, kick him….If you want to take his helmet off punch him in the face, but don’t hit him with a helmet.

    As far as it being a deadly weapon, I guess I may have overclassified that. Would you rather me hit you in the face with my fist or a helmet?

  51. doctorart2013 says: Aug 21, 2013 4:44 PM

    Incognito is in one scrape after another, it sounds like he’s some kind of whack job who’s cruising for a one ticket out of the NFL.

  52. skinsfanwill says: Aug 21, 2013 4:44 PM

    Not defending this loser, but to play on the line in the NFL you have to be able to go into another gear mentally. Security guards are all friggin insecure aholes that think they have some supreme power over everyone. I bet that security guard deserved every bit of that ass whippin.

  53. FinFan68 says: Aug 21, 2013 4:45 PM

    Since when is a helmet a “deadly weapon”?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    When it is swung at another person’s head. You know, kinda like using a baseball bat or a brick, or anything else that has the potential to cause serious harm or death when used in that manner.
  54. monsterscream says: Aug 21, 2013 4:50 PM
    incognito he’s not…
  55. irkjames says: Aug 21, 2013 4:54 PM
    This story is complete CRAP.
    Before everyone starts agreeing/reblogging/retweeting/rehashing on this nonsense, people should actually take the time out to get the original police report from the MIAMI BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT.
    The police report states that the guard hit Incognito while he was trying to break up a fight. In fact, Incognito didn’t even swing at anyone.
    This just another example of how the ESPN syndicate is full of people who openly HATE MIAMI.
    Like, SERIOUSLY, could Adam Schefter at THE VERY LEAST confirm this story before going out and making Incognito look bad???
    Everyone knows Richie’s no saint, but how much more OBVIOUS can ESPN make it look that they’re trying to spin a negative Miami story right after Texans fans get pissed about Antonio Smith getting suspended for RIPPING OFF INCOGNITO’S HELMET AND SWINGING IT AT HIM???
    It’s almost like they were looking for ANYTHING to put the blame back on a Miami player.
    I understand news outlets have to play the bill, but how about some PARTIAL reporting as opposed to catering to ESPN’s fabricated national hate of Miami, South Florida, and our residents???
    I understand the Phins, Canes, Panthers and Marlins have been under par for most of the last decade(s), but they even find time to give some jerk (Skip Bayless) a two-hour time slot for what seemed to be entirely dedicated to hating on Lebron James for the last 3 years.
    Does anyone else not see this???
  56. bringbackwayne says: Aug 21, 2013 4:59 PM
    Suh is smiling as he hopes the media frenzy that watches every move he makes switches to Miami.
  58. larryfinfan says: Aug 21, 2013 4:59 PM
    Check the MB Police report and you get a slightly different story…RI was breaking up a fight, got punched, refused any medical attention…end of story…get your facts right Mr. Schefter….
  59. steeelfann says: Aug 21, 2013 5:22 PM
    He thought he was incognito, but no, there is film.
  60. ncbeachlover44 says: Aug 21, 2013 5:33 PM
    Agreed larryfinfan…….irresponsible journalism by Schefter…
    The police report says it all, including “injuries”. Incognito was trying to break up the fight, threw no punches, and “Incognito had minor injuries to his face and refused medical treatment”
    The security guard had none…….
  61. vaphinfan says: Aug 21, 2013 6:10 PM
    With these injuries and probably suspension coming to the Oline it looks like it may be another long season.
    Richie Incognito was voted the seventh-dirtiest player in the NFL by Sports Illustrated in 2009.
    ___
    2011, Sporting News poll of 111 players, dirtiest ones. Incognito voted 6th
    ___
    2012
    Or this other NFC defensive player, who had some not-so-kind words about the NFL’s second dirtiest player:
    “Richie Incognito. I’ve seen a couple of plays on a D-lineman where (Incognito) is trying to roll up his ankle while he’s trying to get him off him. Crap like that is not needed in this game.”
