Ron Jaworski thinks knee injury may affect RG3′s mechanics

Pittsburgh Steelers v Washington Redskins Getty Images

Will Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III be the same kind of runner after this year’s knee surgery as he was last year? That’s a good question. But an even more important question may be whether Griffin will be the same kind of passer. And at least one person who knows a lot about the quarterback position has his doubts.

Ron Jaworski, the former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst, said on Mike and Mike in the Morning that when Griffin warmed up before this week’s preseason game, he looked like a fundamentally different passer than he had last season.

“I was watching him throw the football — there were a few clips — and I was concerned in the weight transfer,” he said. “I didn’t see the clean mechanics I’ve seen in the past. I’m not there every day, I’m not a doctor, but he just looks a little different right now. It’s pregame, it was warmup, people can discount that. I’m just saying from my eye, I didn’t see the clean drops, the weight transfer, stay on that back foot, snap the hips, that I’d seen out of him.”

Jaworski is also concerned that Griffin won’t be able to move the way he could as a rookie.

“I really don’t know what to expect,” Jaworski said. “His mobility has always set him apart and I’m not sure where his mobility is going to be.”

It’s a valid concern. And one that won’t go away until Griffin can prove he’s the same player he was last year, on the field in the regular season.

Because it’s Jaws, I immediately want to discredit what he’s saying. But truthfully, is there a QB coming back from a comparable injury before?

  2. jcpskins says: Aug 21, 2013 11:27 AM

Crazy, dude is throwing in warmups and being analyzed on every throw. Could we wait to see him play a game first? I think this is a bit premature to say his mechanics are bad. I think he will be fine BTW.

  3. charge1 says: Aug 21, 2013 11:28 AM

In a wheel chair he is better than most NFL qbs

  4. manilarizzo says: Aug 21, 2013 11:28 AM

Running ability impacted? Sure. Throwing mechanics? After having been through this before and hearing the daily training camp reports of 85-90% comp in 7 on 7 and 11 on 11, I can’t say no but I’m doubtful. The team remains shocked at his ability and health……I think the kid will be just fine.

I expect 25-30% less rushing yards and 35% more passing yards and TD’s. the kid is remarkable.

    My thoughts. Time will tell.

That’s why the Skins can’t have nice things.

Jaws is wrong. Robert griffin is a warrior and he is just fine. These Philadelphia reporters players and fans just need to accept that papa redskins are going to own the division for the next 2 decades. #burgundyandgoldbeatdown

  7. thehairychestsportsblog says: Aug 21, 2013 11:32 AM

What were Brady’s numbers the season after his surgery? The media is suffocating these days, we analyze what a qbs stat line was in 11 on 11 passing drills or we do the same for a warm up before a preseason game. Just another one of the talking head fools at ESPN who get more predictions wrong than right, and they are the high paid “experts”

  8. raiderufan says: Aug 21, 2013 11:32 AM

Lets all remember he’s torn a knee before…all he did after was win a heisman, bring Baylor to prominance, run a 4.4 forty, get drafted top 2 and bring a team that had long tried to shake the label of “average at best” to the playoffs….

I’ll wait until the games count and he’s had more than a handful of live reps before I decide he’ll be different.

  9. chazatlas says: Aug 21, 2013 11:34 AM

I pray RGIII doesn’t become a victim of what will become known as ‘The Theisman Curse.’

  10. gochargersgo says: Aug 21, 2013 11:34 AM

Analysis of a QB’s mechanics in the warm-up of a preseason game? One that he wasn’t even going to play in? Do we need any more evidence that the coverage of the game might be going a little too far?

Newsflash: it will take him awhile to get back to where he was before.

It does not mean he’s not a starting caliber NFL QB.

The only question the Redskins need to answer right now is: “is his health good enough so that he is the best option for QB on the team?”

Anything else is useless speculation. Of course it’s going to take some time to return to form. That’s not really that insightful of a point.

The difference between Brady and RG3 injuries is Brady tore the ACL in his left knee, RG3 tore his ACL (for the 2nd time) in his right knee (his plant leg). If you know the game of football the plant leg for a QB is where all his power in the lower body comes from.

No one knows what will happen until he steps back on the field. I would be somewhat concerned simply because it is his 2nd ACL in less then 5 years. Ask Terrell Thomas (DB for the Giants) how that turned out. He tore his ACL for the 3rd time last year just getting his feet tangled with a WR.

  31. baddegg says: Aug 21, 2013 11:59 AM

Since we listen to ESPN commentators and take their word as gospel:

Rex Grossman is the best 3rd QB in the league and still a really great option that can win you a lot of games.

Kurt Cousins is worth a first round pick and therefore is one of the best backups in the league.

Chucky said both of these monday night.

So all you all taking Jaws at his word — you take Chucky’s word as well right?

Or are you all just uninformed trolls looking for anything to put down the Redskins.

Too bad for you all that the games are played on Sundays, Mondays and occassionally THursdays and your comments will have NO IMPACT on the reality of Griffin’s performance.

IN other words, you can sqwauk all you want, but your saying it doesn’t make it so.

I didn’t realize that there were so many RGB homers. Try just a little objectivity for a moment. Your precious “savior” wasn’t able to finish the most important game of his pro career, because his body failed. It’s not like he’s just going to magically fix all that. His only real strength was the run option. Now, realizing that he couldn’t even survive one season doing that, he’s either going to have to just sit in the pocket, and he’ll be nothing but a pedestrian passer for a few years, or he’ll continue his scrambly-rambly stuff, and wind up on IR before mid-way through this season. In fact, you can bank on it.

So, Redskin homers, chill out. You’re putting ALL your money on a very, very risky proposition.

It will take him time to adjust. Just the presence of the knee brace will take some considerable adjustment. Those bother some guys worse than others, and I’m guessing RG3 didn’t like them much before given he hadn’t taken to wearing one after the first time he hurt the knee.

I understand what Jaws is saying, but it’s like anyone else coming back from injury, he has put in his rehab time and is raring to go.

First name me two QB’s in the league who have the same exact mechanics? And of Brady and Manning take you’re pick which has the right QB mechanics? Better yet look at Philllip Rivers mechanics…so I’m not sure what exactly “Jaws” is getting at

  71. truths4all says: Aug 21, 2013 1:42 PM

Jaws is just being his annoying Jaws-self and trying to push his self-importance.

A much bigger concern for Redskins fans is how Shanahan is going to mismanage and wrongully coach RG3 again this coming season. Shanahan’s only claim to fame was during those years his coaches built a dominating defense coupled with a powerful running attack that all supported an aging and hanging on Elway. You only need to look at Elway’s Super Bowl stats to see he is a 3 time loser and has some of most awful QB stats of all time. When Denver won their Super Bowls, they won because of their superior defense and running attack. The Redskins do not have those yet so do not get all riled up for the playoffs until they do.

  72. cowpiesnotcowboys says: Aug 21, 2013 1:52 PM

It’s quite possible that the knee injury could have impact on other parts of RG3′s game. Theisman’s knee injury turned him into a blithering idiot.

  73. rgtre10 says: Aug 21, 2013 1:55 PM

Let’s see he’s not on the PUP list, he’s done the 7 on drills, the 11 0n 11 drills…he’s able to do all the required football moves and has had no setbacks, so why all this fuss and worry? And then there are the worry bees who think if he plays in the first game and gets hurt whoa unto Shanahan??? People please lets get ahold of ourselves, first if he’s done up to this point all that’s been asked of him and no setbacks, and the stated recovery time was 6-8 or 7-9 months whichever you like and he’s been ahead of schedule what makes think you he won’t be ready and will get hurt? It’s football people get hurt all the time it doesn’t matter when, where or what time of the football season i.e. see Brady injures knee in practice (during pre-season). If he’s medically cleared that means the knee and supporting areas are all healed and he’s good to go…you can’t live life in an eggshell folks.

D___! It sure has made it’s way to Mark Sanchez, Christian Ponder, Jay Cutler, Carson Palmer, Brandon Weedon, Tony Romo, Matt Ryan, Blane Gabbert, LOL…Seems it hasn’t made it’s way to Brady & Manning yet… hmmmmm interesting….

Carson, Cutler, Ryan, Weeden & Romo dont get near as much criticism as Vick, Newton and RG3…Nice try…LOL Gabbert is garbage but he doesnt get it either…Sanchez may get it as much….there is 1 MAYBE I can agree with you on… So again it is INTERESTING

RGIII didn’t tear his ACL again. He tore his PCL and they did some work on his ACL as a precautionary measure.

^ See it’s comments like this that make the Washington fan base seem delusional.

^^ Point taken, although im pretty sure there are delusional individuals who make any and every fan base look bad. Ya just have to tune out the non objective fan and make sure you don’t waste your energy on them. Kill’m with silence!

    —————————————————-
Brady also didn’t have to worry about running the ball. Huge difference in how your knee/leg is conditioned I would think. RG3 will see more pressure because teams will know he can’t run as well.

I believe you have selective hearing or comprehension because you ar eonly looking at RG3s second day of 11 on 11s and ignoring the INTs that he also tossed. He didn’t look like he was nearly as fast as last season when he was “Sprinting” or nearly as explosive (granted it was warmups), but isn’t he also the same guy who treats every single rep like a game? That’s what I heard when he was playing well at least and all along during his rehab.

Time will tell, but I will rely on the history of Mike Vick and other running QBs bc despite what RGME and the Gruden claimns, he is and ALWAYS has been a run first QB.

Bottom line…they have given Dr. Andrews the final say to determine if RG3 is ready to go. Don’t be surprised if you don’t see him until week 3 or4. As for Jaws assessment, I’m sure there is some accuracy to his comments but no one will know until RG3 starts playing football. As for the fan who said the DC Pro Football fans will cringe every time he drops back, you better believe it! I’ll be nervous every single week he plays. We can only hope he stays healthy throughout the year.

jaws was a joke as a player and he was so bad n MNF,ESPN showed him the way out of the booth door, and those of us who remember him as a qb for the rams and eagles remember him cause he just was not that good of a player.he did seem to enjoy being sacked by large black men like LT however! his eagles never won much when he was their qb and they have been just as big of a joke as he has been an announcer then! grow up jaws you idiot!

I’ve been a fan for over 30 years, and have not wavered, just like most of the fans here, but now there is this thing called social media that has recently given fans a platform to comment on their team, so your comments are foolish and very inaccurate. Unless you have ever lived in the DC Metro area, you would know this. The DC Pro Football team has been a media staple, and all other teams become irrelevant when the season begins. Now that’s a fact!

    ============================================

I shake my head every time I read this kind of “logic” when dismissing the opinions of commentators. Jaworski forgot more about football than you’ll ever know. He’s been in lockerrooms, played at the elite level, and been around football PLAYERS his whole life. Just because his phyiscal talent was not up to your elite standard doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to quarterbacks.

By your “logic”, Jon Gruden doesn’t know what he’s talking about because he never even played in the NFL, unlike Jaworski. Let’s talk about Bill Belichick’s stellar NFL career as a player….

  92. jizmaglobin says: Aug 21, 2013 4:10 PM

Jaws is just talking smack. RG3 has been through this before. In fact, he credits the first time he had ACL surgery, and the time he couldn’t really work on footwork because of it, for giving him the incredibly quick release and the cannon he sports today. Look out NFL, he’s going to come back as strong and capable as ever and continue to improve. He will soon be the new standard for what a QB could and should be. HTTR!!

  93. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Aug 21, 2013 4:15 PM

You’re sure hoping so aren’t you coug? Because a healthy RG3 ate up your sorry ash defense for 14 points in one quarter. That’s what the league is so afraid of. The number 1 D in football was eaten up like chumps before he tweeked the knee. Now, being even healthier than he was at that point (cause his knee was jacked up even then) he’s going to shred defenses. We’ll see you clowns in the playoffs if you make it.

  95. bigbenh8tr says: Aug 21, 2013 5:56 PM

One last little tidbit I just saw.

Only 6 Rookies EVER have started every game and finished the season with a passer rating over 100. The others? Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Jim Kelly, Andy Dalton, and Joe Flacco.

That’s 3 superbowl trips between them and one superbowl. Russell will surely add another to the group soon.

  96. aebjr says: Aug 21, 2013 9:16 PM

Before you give a tidbit, how about actually checking your information. None of the players that you have listed had a passer rating of over 100 during their rookie seasons.

    Cam Newton 84.5
    Matt Ryan 87.7
    Jim Kelly 83.3
    Andy Dalton 80.4
    Joe Flacco 80.3

Also, that would be 5 superbowl trips between them.

Buffalo went 4 straight years and you would have to count the win by Flacco as a trip. Since you can’t get those facts right, I doubt if you can predict Russell Wilson’s future.
