Saints cut Jason Smith

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft will need to find a new home if he’s to continue his career.

The Saints have cut offensive tackle Jason Smith, coach Sean Payton said Wednesday, according to the club’s official Twitter feed.

The 27-year-old Smith signed with New Orleans in April. He appeared in all 16 games with the Jets in 2012 as a backup after the club acquired him from St. Louis, which drafted him one spot after Matthew Stafford in 2009. Smith struggled with injuries, including concussions, in his three seasons with St. Louis.

It’s possible another team could give Smith a look. He’s still relatively young, and he showed enough promise to be a highly regarded draft prospect not long ago. However, being let go this late in the preseason is a definite setback.

He would be the starting LT on the packers

Raiders could stand to take a look at him too…

Shame, a real good player, guy and teammate. The pure definition of an injury bust.

The top of the 2009 Draft will go down as one of the worst ever.

Jason Smith at 2, Tyson Jackson at 3, Aaron Curry at 4, Mark Sanchez at 5 and Darrius Heyward-Bey at 7.

    Better than Alex Barron.

  9. irkjames says: Aug 21, 2013 1:04 PM

Is he at least a serviceable backup left tackle?

After 3 preseason games I like what I see in Jonathan Martin starting on the left, but Miami could take a look at Jason Smith for depth.

You forgot Aaron bleep maybin at 11 Moreno at 12

Said it when this guy was drafted, who thought he could be an elite LT or tackle in the NFL at all needs to be fired.

…and with all of these future Hall of Famers at the top of the draft, you still get a ton of lions fans complaining that Matt Stafford was the wrong pick

In addition to struggling with injuries, he’s also struggled with being a lousy offensive lineman.

He is not an “injury bust”…He’s just a bust.

  15. sb44champs says: Aug 21, 2013 1:25 PM

That’s too bad, I was hopeful Jason Smith would be able to resurrect his career as he is a super nice guy but if he can’t latch on to a team like the Saints that have an O-line friendly system(see Drew Brees), he’s pretty much done. Drew made Bushrod look like an all-pro..

Almost half of the 2009 1st round are considered a bust:

    2. Smith
    3. Jackson
    4. Curry
    5. Sanchez
    7. Heyward-Bey
    8. Monroe
    11. Maybin
    12. Moreno
    16. English
    18. Ayers
    24. Jerry
    25. Davis
    27. Brown
    31. Wells

He really wasn’t that bad with the Saints, they just had better players at his position. He’ll probably catch on somewhere. I won’t say he’s a starter but he could be an ideal swing tackle on a team in need of depth.

  20. deathmonkey41 says: Aug 21, 2013 2:01 PM

The Saints need to swear off anything that has the stink of Steve Spagnuolo tied to it. That tool set the Rams back for years.

sign of a good LT – if he goes fishing on draft day

and here goes Martin Mayhew hopping on the phone, o wait he was released by the Saints not the Jaguars. We are safe

Who was a bigger bust, Jason Smith or AJ Jenkins? Well, at least Smith wasnt a reach AND a bust.

Monroe has been a stud. He’ll get tagged this after this year. If he didnt play in Jax people like you’d know who he was.

I know he’s always been an OT, but can he play OG? Send him to Dallas.

    And Eugene Monroe can ball.
