The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday they have placed safety Darcel McBath on injured reserve.
According to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News, McBath apparently suffered a foot injury in last week’s preseason matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
McBath was fighting for a roster spot with the 49ers. He has been listed as a third-string option at strong safety behind Donte Whitner and Craig Dahl. He appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers last season – playing primarily on special teams – and recorded seven tackles on the year.
To replace McBath on the roster, the 49ers claimed linebacker Joe Holland off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Holland spent training camp with the 49ers in 2012 before being released during final cuts. He has since spent time on the practice squad with the Miami Dolphins and was Buccaneers and was re-signed by Tampa to a futures contract in January before being waived on Wednesday.
Holland recorded four tackles in two preseason games for Tampa Bay.
