Rex Ryan confirms Geno Smith is starting Saturday

Geno Smith AP

Every sign has been pointing in the direction of Geno Smith starting at quarterback for the Jets against the Giants on Saturday and coach Rex Ryan made it official on Thursday.

Smith will make his first start of the preseason a week after missing a game against the Jaguars with an ankle injury while Mark Sanchez will come off the bench and play later in the game. The start will give Smith a chance to play with the first team offense and his performance should loom large in the Jets’ ultimate decision about who their starter will be this season.

Ryan said that decision could take another week and quarterbacks coach David Lee said the competition would have to extend through the fourth game for Smith to emerge victorious, but that there was no way a starter would be named before Smith got a shot at running the starting offense.

“Right now is not the appropriate time to name a starter, because it’s incomplete,” Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

There were no details from Ryan about how long each quarterback would play on Saturday nor was there a specific explanation about what Smith needs to do to win the job. Given Sanchez’s issues with turnovers over the last two years, not handing the ball to the opposition would be a good place for the rookie to start making his case.

This is a good call for a third pre-season game. Throw him in the vs. the ones in the first quarter. If he gets killed, throws picks or generally looks lost, everyone will see it. He’ll stand at the press conference for less time if everyone sees Geno isn’t ready. They know what they have in Sanchez. Giving him the start teaches them nothing.

Best of luck to Geno. As a Jets fan, I hope this is the end of Sanchez starting.

I feel bad for jets fans basically this is a wasted year, rex will be gone, your team has no talent, no franchise anything atleast you’ll get clowney and probably be a bust with your luck, kinda reminds me when we had singletary for a year…

… and a new head coach.

When healthy, Geno Smith has looked pretty good. Even in the first preseason game he went 7/8 before his injury.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets had a pretty good game on Saturday. The Oline has been solid so far and the young, inexperience but talented WRs are getting as open as any set of WRs have gotten in the Rex era.

People are underestimating the Jets because of the national narrative, but they look much improved offensively over the 6-10 2012 squad.
Which is what makes these 3-13 predictions so funny/sad/misguided.

  9. jayniner says: Aug 22, 2013 2:25 PM

  10. wildwalt7 says: Aug 22, 2013 2:25 PM

To introduce the team the jets should have a mini cooper drive out to midfield and have all their players pile out of it.

  12. seatownballers says: Aug 22, 2013 2:27 PM

Nothing against g Smith, I just think the jets should’ve drafted a running back in the second round. We all know Sanchez won’t finish the season. Jets will go 5-11

  13. britishteeth says: Aug 22, 2013 2:28 PM

Jets are only doing this because they’re jealous ej Manuel has shined so far in the preseason and don’t want to be outdone by a division rival. All to get more media attention it’s the jets way.

  16. kenstabler says: Aug 22, 2013 2:30 PM

Can’t wait to see his great practice turn into a great disaster. This is Rex Ryan’s last hope of keeping his job. I know Rex is saying prayers that this kid will be a star and save his job. NOT!.

  17. metitometin says: Aug 22, 2013 2:34 PM

Sounds like Rex has a tattoo of his wife in a Geno Smith jersey already picked out. Maybe he can get a tattoo of Mark Sanchez ButtFumbling.

  18. mrplow3 says: Aug 22, 2013 2:35 PM

The question is why WOULDN’T you start Geno Smith? He may be terrible, I think we will be as a pro, but we already know Mark Sanchez is complete and utter garbage at QB.

So again I ask, Why would you NOT go into the season with Smith over Sanchez as your starting QB?

Will Geno Smith also be wearing a hairband? Is that the crown of a starter in Jetsland?

  21. myditkainyourbutkis says: Aug 22, 2013 2:37 PM

At what point do jets fans move Geno above Robertson, Gholsten, and Kyle Brady as the biggest draft bust in franchise history? Over/Under Week 10.

What are the odds the Jets don’t need to move up next year to sabatoge the franchise even more? 2:1.

How long after Rex gets fired does he start sucking toes for cash? Over / Under 3 Years.

I wish this team was in the NFC East so bad.

Don’t you people see what is going on???

Thirty one teams passed up on drafting this guy?

Why?????? Easy answer…..so the Jets daft another incompetent, less talented quarterback than they have right now….

Easy “W” for all 31 teams!!

  24. cwk22 says: Aug 22, 2013 2:40 PM

With so many articles about just Smith and Sanchez I am beginning to wonder: (1) is there any other positions with players competing for their jobs (2) did they draft anyone other then smith. Probably not since that is all you hear about. As a Dolphin Fan I am used to articles that are mostly negative about my team. I hate the jets, but this is getting old. It’s time to hear about the rest of the team!

  25. 4512dawg4512 says: Aug 22, 2013 2:45 PM

Me may get the start, but does anyone think Rex will see it?

  28. raiderlyfe510 says: Aug 22, 2013 2:53 PM

    Like its Rex’s decision.

  29. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Aug 22, 2013 2:54 PM

from the noise coming out of new york, it is apparent the g.m. views rex as a one-year obstacle to the rebuild of the team.

from what little smith has shown thus far, to hand the team to him is like conceding the season; perhaps with the draft in mind.

a good big picture idea perhaps, but the men in the locker room aren’t fools- at least the defense is loyal to rex, and this won’t go down well there unless smith shows something he hasn’t shown since week 3 of his senior year.

  30. 60193sheik says: Aug 22, 2013 2:59 PM

Hes only starting because sanchez is attending a high school home coming.

  31. smalltownqb says: Aug 22, 2013 3:06 PM

Really makes no sense at this point to call Geno the starter. He has not done enough to separate himself. What if you start him and he blows? Imagine the issue of going BACK to Sanchez? Much easier the other way around.

  32. nfloracle says: Aug 22, 2013 3:07 PM

The approach that makes the most sense to me is to name Sanchez the starter and give him eight to ten games to resurrect the QB who has won playoff games for the Jets. If Sanchez falters and looks terrible, then bench him and bring Smith in at some point, hopefully late in the season after he’s had many more months to learn and gain some confidence.

It makes little sense to name Smith the starter when he’s an untested and, in my mind at least, questionable pick to begin with.

Can you imagine the noise coming from Jets fans if Rex has to bench Smith for ineffective play and then bring Sanchez in to pitch relief for the rest of the season?

Start with the known quantity at QB, depend on a great defense, and a better than most people think receiver corp, and see what happens.

I’m in the minority, I know, but I think the Jets this year have the potential to surprise some people, especially if Sanchez can get his mojo back.

  33. bighurt228 says: Aug 22, 2013 3:16 PM

I’m no way a jets fan, but can only imagine the relief they feel to hear this. Anybody other then butt fumble would be great. I myself will miss those awesome clips of SANCHISE trying to lead an NFL team. I think this kid deserves a shot cuz he can’t be any worse right now.

Look at their schedule. They could be 1-7 or 2-6 at the bye. If they’re 3-5 it would be a miracle. They will lose to the AFC North, that’s 4 losses. Probably 1-5 in the division. And they will lose 3 of 4 to the NFC South. That’s 12 L’s right there. They may win 1 or 2 games you expect them to lose, but being the Jet’s they will probably lose 1 or 2 games you expect them to win. Anyone that doesn’t think this is a power struggle between the GM and coach is crazy. And we know who will win this time. This team is being built for next year when the clown coach is gone. They have some good defensive pieces to start with.

  36. nflpoker says: Aug 22, 2013 3:21 PM

Smith may be starting because Rex took the buttfumble out of the playbook.

  37. officialgame says: Aug 22, 2013 3:24 PM

Personally wouldn’t the Jets rather see Sanchez take the bullets the first 8 games or so since he has no future in NY? With a bad O line and very little in the way of weapons the Jets run the risk of destroying this kid before his career even starts. Sanchez is already dead man walking.

  38. lrjets says: Aug 22, 2013 3:26 PM

Gotta love the critics here from Miami and Pittsburgh.

    12 wins between them.

The Raiders? Their back page will have crime stories from the week-end.

This was my thought exactly. More than other teams, the NY media hounds with latch on and not let go. Especially since there’s a race between Sanchez (proven failure) and Smith (unproven at all).

By putting Geno out there to show where he’s at developmentally will remove all sort of questions about what/why/who regarding the starting QB.

Paint any picture about the Jets you want to, but I would bet the Drew Stanton (whom the Jets signed and verbally guaranteed that he would be the back-up with the chance to compete to the starter until the Jets went out and signed Tebow) is absolutely glad he is away from the wishy-washy Jets and the mealy-feeble minded Rex Ryan.

  43. frankiesweep says: Aug 22, 2013 3:53 PM

  45. steelerben says: Aug 22, 2013 4:11 PM

Getting Smith plenty of live game reps with the first team offense against a first team defense is going to really let you know what he is going to be able to bring to the table. Sanchez has had enough snaps to be able to miss a preseason start and not be any worse than he already is. Get him out there, let it fly, and see if he can hit a covered receiver in a scenario that doesn’t really matter. No sense in sending him out against the second and third stringers that are fighting for a roster spot as cut day approaches. You don’t want to see him blown up by a guy looking to make a name for himself.

I’d be pretty surprised to see him start week one unless he proves to be lights out. If he struggles and Sanchez comes out to start, you’ve basically conceded your season. You start Sanchez, let the defense carry the team for a few weeks, then yank Sanchez after a three pick game (you know he’ll have one) and roll with the kid. He can come out and be the hero if the play well, or be a “rookie getting valuable experience on a team without enough talent to fulfill his potential.” Win-win.
