All five 49ers quarterbacks will play on Sunday

Harbaugh AP

This week, the 49ers expanded their roster of quarterbacks to five with the addition of Seneca Wallace.  Coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday that all five will play on Sunday night, when the 49ers host the Vikings on Sunday Night Football.

“Yeah, you split it up, you split it up five ways,” Harbaugh told reporters, via quotes distributed by the team.

Asked for clarification, Harbaugh said that, yes, Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien, B.J. Daniels, and Wallace will play on Sunday.

“I anticipate that,” Harbaugh said.  “We’ll see how  Scott does today in practice after an off day.  He had something that he was working through and wasn’t able to, wasn’t at full speed Wednesday, Tuesday, and Monday or since the ballgame in Kansas City.  We’ll see where he’s at today, and if he’s good to go and at 100 percent or close to it then we’ll split it up after Kap four ways.”

Harbaugh said McCoy will go second after Kaepernick.

The head coach also explained that the addition of Wallace doesn’t mean that the team lacks confidence in the current backups to Kaepernick.

“The fact that you could get an experienced quarterback like Seneca Wallace at this stage when you have seven-to-ten days ‘til there’s a final cut down to the final roster then a chance to bring him in to do more than just a workout,” Harbaugh said.  “You get a chance to actually practice and play in a preseason game or two. So, I felt like there was no downside to doing that.”

If Kaepernick plays an entire half, as starters usually do in the third preseason game, that’ll leave roughly half of a quarter for each of the other four.  Whichever of the five are left after Tuesday’s cut from 90 to 75 presumably will split the reps in the final preseason game.

Both of their wide receivers are expected to suit up as well.

we have 5 starting qb’s go ahead and hate haha jk BUT we do have KAP!! and you wish your team had him!!

Considering Kaepernick has played a grand total of 17 snaps the entire preseason, the likelihood of him playing an entire half is pretty low.

I mean he played 4 snaps in the 2nd game of the preseason, Harbaugh isn’t exactly following the norm here.

lol unbias? fortywhiners? Are you excited about entering middle school next year?

  6. alldonesmith says: Aug 23, 2013 8:38 PM

Kaepernick will only play a series or two. Harbaugh has said a few times that he doesn’t want to expose Kaep to potential injury.

That being said, splitting a game 4 ways doesn’t leave too many reps for guys to distinguish themselves. Definitely not an ideal situation. Hopefully in future years the backup QB position is more settled.

    hey unbiasfan,

go ahead and enjoy your august superbowl because you’re vikings are going no where. Even AP can only take you to only one embarassing playoff game…

    The 49ers are laughable.

Follow our example and actually win championships. You know, this decade?

Did Fraudbaugh also say he has five #1 quarterbacks?

  12. GenXJay says: Aug 23, 2013 9:02 PM

Why would Jim play Kaep at all if there is 4 others waiting to be evaluated?
Also, the idea of bringing in Seneca is to be a potential back-up is ridiculous. We all know why he there. Don’t play us for fools, Jim.

  13. alexsmithpwnswhinners says: Aug 23, 2013 9:12 PM

kap will play 1 series again, the more he plays the more everyone will know 49ers have NOTHING behind Boldin. Moreover, that will exposed the fact the backup QBs are a bunch of fails that also have no worthy WRs to throw to lol…

It’s already out there, on NFL Network when they talked SB prediction, both Heath Evans and Darren Sharper pick SEA for NFC. On ESPN “Audibles”, 3 out of 4 pick SEA in the SB for the win, Darren Woodson call SEA the 1992 Cowboys, and only Steve Young pick the 9ers for SB from the NFC and got called a “Homer” immediately… LOL!

Fail WR Crop once and again and exposed by their own admission with trading their 1st round pick WR just a year ago for a proven bust when the season hasn’t even started lol… so fail.

  15. illiniftw says: Aug 23, 2013 9:31 PM

Harbaugh is about to launch a new revolutionary offense using a center, his 5 #1 WR and his 5 #1 QBs! Look out NFL!

When is the last time the niners won a Super Bowl?

  17. mrmichaelrosales says: Aug 23, 2013 9:38 PM

Kaep will probably play one series. The other four will be competing for 2 roster spots and maybe a spot on the practice squad. I believe they keep Kaep, Tolzien, and Daniels. The Niners have shown they’re willing to fix their mistakes, that being said I’d say goodbye to McCoy.

    It’s a pre-season game. Who cares.

You’ll be home watching us play yet again this January.

I expect Seahawk haters but not from the Steelers. Then again, knowing how pathetic the Steelers are going to be I guess you have to find something to do.

………and you still don’t make the playoffs. Let’s be honest…..it’s the Minnesota Peterson’s and some other guys. I hope AP doesn’t wind up like another great running back who ran for 2,000 yards who was constantly stuck on mediocre teams.

  26. ndvikingfan says: Aug 23, 2013 10:50 PM

This should be a fun game to watch considering the game the vikes took from the mighty niners last year. SKOL Vikings!

  27. mikejonesforum says: Aug 23, 2013 11:10 PM

Hey coach, I think it’s a good idea to play all of the QB’s b/c if Colin goes down, I don’t see an insurance policy. That will translate into, the season is over.

  28. mnmarine0351 says: Aug 23, 2013 11:15 PM

Rather see alot of Kap Sunday night than the backups. Vikes D has looked good but struggled last year against mobile QBs. Would like as much chance to see one as possible. Also hoping to finally see the offense take the field for the first time this preseason.

  29. tommysaint1 says: Aug 23, 2013 11:28 PM

He might of picked up Seneca to peek into the Saints play book. Just a thought.

  31. jayniner says: Aug 23, 2013 11:51 PM

Once again, 13 WR’s on the roster and 5 QB’s to throw to them…

We all know who’s throwing to these guys….let’s limit the QB situation and focus on the WR situation…..please Harbaugh?

  32. goldrush36 says: Aug 24, 2013 12:26 AM

Actually he never said all 5 will. He said they could… Tolzien is currently nursing an injury of some sort

Your example? Steelers haven’t won a championship “this decade” either. You DO know what a “decade” is don’t you? The 49ers have been to a championship this “decade”. How ’bout the Steelers? Oh, no?

  40. norseman69 says: Aug 24, 2013 8:29 AM

Webb & Wallace… The NFL is at it again, I have a friend who is a player on the Colts who told me they force the teams to keep a certain number of 2nd tier QB’s and give them a chance… See Green Bay with Young…lol

  41. whatjusthapped says: Aug 24, 2013 9:18 AM

This is what the preseason is for, to evaluate players under live conditions. Too bad SF will get screwed because its only against the Vikings. I’m sure they would prefer to see how their Qbs do against real competition.

  42. kwjsb says: Aug 24, 2013 9:48 AM

Any more back-up QB’s from Cleveland you need to sign?

  43. edawg7l says: Aug 24, 2013 11:06 AM

Colt McCoy is their #2 guy. Yikes. Colin better stay healthy. McCoy can only throw the ball about 10-15 yards. Plus, if he gets hurt, Papa McCoy will come down hard on the team doctors.

  44. alexsmithpwnswhinners says: Aug 24, 2013 12:44 PM

    Anything from Cleveland is trash.

  45. goldrush36 says: Aug 24, 2013 2:02 PM
