Kevin Kolb out with “concussion-like symptoms”

Kevin Kolb AP

Kevin Kolb got the start for the Bills against the Redskins on Saturday afternoon and the absence of E.J. Manuel in the lineup had things set up for Kolb to play a lot and make his best case for the starting quarterback job.

His day appears to have come to an early end. Jeff Tuel was in at quarterback for the third offensive series of the game with Kolb off the field.┬áThe Bills’ television broadcast reports that Kolb is being evaluated for a head injury after taking a knee to the head at the end of a run.

Kolb’s brief appearance in the game showed pretty much the same Kolb we’ve grown accustomed to over the years. He was a bit too quick to run out of the pocket, leading to one sack and one scramble for a first down, and the Bills kept most of the passes on the shorter side, although T.J. Graham was interfered with on the one shot that Buffalo took down the field. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t particularly inspiring either.

Tuel has done well in the preseason thus far, so the team gets a chance a look at him with starters in order to see how he fares with the first string. That issue might be one of great importance given the health of the team’s other two options.

UPDATE 5:48 p.m. ET: The Bills have ruled Kolb out for the rest of the day with “concussion-like symptoms.” Kolb missed the final month of the 2011 season in Arizona because of a concussion.

The Bills are likely going to have to go shopping for a quarterback in the next few days with Manuel still recovering from knee surgery. The list of available options includes former Bill Tyler Thigpen, Matt Leinart and JaMarcus Russell.

Kevin Kolb is the real life version of Samuel L Jackson’s character in Unbreakable whose bones were made of glass.

  3. aaroncurryisbust says: Aug 24, 2013 5:34 PM

He must have had a injury when he chose to sign with the Bills.

  4. jpaq68 says: Aug 24, 2013 5:36 PM

He should have been checked for a head injury when he agreed to sign with the Bills.

  5. FinFan68 says: Aug 24, 2013 5:36 PM

Wow, never seen that headline before…

I was listening to that game on Sirius and a Redskin announcer chuckled and said the rookie gave Kolb an inadvertant knee to the head…and then commended the kid

  6. badguy711 says: Aug 24, 2013 5:40 PM

He’s more talented than some like to give him credit for, but an injury prone QB doesn’t have much an a shelf life in the NFL.

  7. afcdomination says: Aug 24, 2013 5:41 PM

if someone gets hurt giving kolb a chance, kolb also gets hurt. if the team gives kolb the shot as THE guy, he gets hurt, if Kolb struggles and finally begins to show some promise as a starter….he gets hurt the very next game.

It appears that kolb is just a hyped brodie croyle. glass. made of glass.

Nice decision to sign this guy buffalo. Seattle is calling on line one, wondering if you would like to trade a second round pick to get tavarius back. .

  10. kosarsmyidol says: Aug 24, 2013 5:45 PM

Wow. It reminds me of when Brandon Weeden got caught underneath the flag prior to his first game last year. There’s no way that Kolb would’ve escaped that without a broken collar bone. I feel bad for the guy.

  11. mwitt5148 says: Aug 24, 2013 5:45 PM

When Kolb travels around the country during away games they need to put him in packing peanuts.

He didn’t slip on another mat did he

Buffalo looked better when Tuel was in there. Yea they got their TD with Kolb in there but Tuel looked more confident and in control than Kolb did. Kolb looked more bad than good. If I was Buffalo then I would give the backup job to Tuel and cut or trade Kolb.

Cardinal fan here. Kolb missed more than half the season last year due to injures, the main one being a concussion. He needs to seriously consider retiring.

  15. nananatman says: Aug 24, 2013 5:54 PM

He also got them in position for oft injured cj spiller who came up gimpy after getting stepped on by a defender inside the endzone on a short td run. With Spiller stepped on and Kolb kneed in the head are the Redskins play becoming dirtier than the social implications of their moniker?

  16. gah05 says: Aug 24, 2013 5:54 PM

Release Kolb, save your money Ralph. Clowney sweepstakes is under way. The defense not offense will dictate the season and they don’t look much better than last year. Still cannot stop the run, a bad sign.

  17. seabreezes51 says: Aug 24, 2013 5:57 PM

I think he has retirement like symptoms

  18. Ferdinand says: Aug 24, 2013 5:59 PM

Graham Harrell’s agent should be putting his call into the Bills right now and arranging a tryout.

Yes, Harrell is limited but he’s sturdier and who knows, maybe something will finally click with him in Buffalo. Maybe not. What have they got to lose with what they’ve got now?

Not having at least one QB having enough time under center in game situations in the preseason will not help matters going against the Patriots in the first game.

  33. askyeshua says: Aug 24, 2013 6:43 PM

I know he would hate to contemplate this option, but for his own safety, Kevin Kolb needs to consider retiring. He has suffered concussion symptoms dating back to his days at Philadelphia. One concussion, is one too many.

Ahh, Arizona’s little china doll finally cracked again. I figured he would make it out of camp but it all went down hill after that mat-monster tripped him up. At least he can say he played in the NFL and he still has all the loot he fleeced the Cards for. Time to hang it up buddy!

  43. wizwix says: Aug 24, 2013 8:11 PM

HCDM talked about Kolb after the game. Cut! Said the Bills will be bringing in QBs.

  48. connormyboy says: Aug 24, 2013 8:27 PM

  49. foosballisthedevil says: Aug 24, 2013 8:36 PM

49ers will have 5 QBs playing in tomorrow night’s game. I’d bet 3 of them will be performing for a move to western NY

  50. razzmatazzcomics says: Aug 24, 2013 8:38 PM

The Eagles will get a 1st rounder for Nick Foles. That Chip Kelly is a genius!

  51. japmen says: Aug 24, 2013 9:05 PM

Kevin Kolb, the gift that keeps on giving…to his own bank account. Possibly one of the most overrated QBs to ever hit the field. Definitely the most ‘injury’ prone.

  52. collegefan69 says: Aug 24, 2013 9:08 PM

    Mr. Glass

  53. tfoz5150 says: Aug 24, 2013 9:08 PM

Correction: you mean for Michael Vick

  54. EJ says: Aug 24, 2013 9:10 PM

If Kolb keeps it up, people are going to start to use his name in association with being hurt.

Ex- Dave Kolb’d his neck while fixing the roof.
Ex- Brenda went to the hospital after Kolbing her leg today.

  55. EJ says: Aug 24, 2013 9:22 PM

The Bills should grab Journeyman Tyler Thigpen for the time being, just to back up Jeff Tuel until EJ Manuel is healthy again.

If Manuel is not ready to go by week 1 against the Patriots, Jeff Tuel should start. I have complete faith in him being able to handle the job, whether it is for 1 week or the rest of the season. If he is given the starting Offensive line and all the weapons the Bills have, Spiller, Jackson, Johnson, Goodwin, Chandler and Woods, he’ll be completely fine. Go Bills!! #BillsMafia

  56. fordmandalay says: Aug 24, 2013 11:04 PM

Sigh…it’s not even fun making fun of Kolb getting hurt anymore…it’s like making fun of the Sun coming up every morning….

  58. gfcf42489 says: Aug 27, 2013 12:31 PM

Don’t think Kolb is overrated at all. Nobody mentions him in the class of Brady, Manning, etc. and rightfully so.

He is what he is — a decent starter who has proven to put up big passing numbers, but is terribly inconsistent and injury-prone. Everyone knows that. Still, you can’t deny the fact that he’s done more in the NFL than some past top 1st round picks like Akili Smith, Cade McNown, and Jamarcus Russell combined.
