Mark Sanchez exits with injured throwing shoulder

Mark Sanchez didn’t last long in the Jets’ third preseason game.

After Geno Smith played most of the way, Sanchez finally came on in the fourth quarter, only to lose a fumble on his first series. Then on the next series, Sanchez suffered what appeared to be an injury to his throwing shoulder.

The injury happened when Sanchez took a hard shot from Giants defensive tackle Marvin Austin just after he threw a pass. Sanchez had also taken a hard hit on the previous play and may have still been feeling the effects of that hit as well.

Sanchez was in obvious pain as he held his shoulder, and he also looked frustrated that he hadn’t had much of an opportunity to make a statement in the Jets’ quarterback competition. Sanchez appeared to be the favorite to win the competition, but if Sanchez is hurt, Smith may be the winner by default.

If the Pats cut Tebow, look for the Jets to claim him on waivers.

  2. thesmartest1 says: Aug 24, 2013 10:04 PM

The jets are going to want Tebow back.

so…a guy who had 3 INT’s and ran out of the end zone on accident is going to win the qb job with this performance.

I feel bad for jets fans

Why was Sanchez even playing in the 4th Q?

Rex deserves to be fired based on his decision making tonight. Whether or not he was being pressured by Idzik. Ultimately this will be all blamed on him.

You know, going without a quarterback entirely might be the Jets best option.

Just put another RB under center and run the ball every play. It can’t go worse.

The problem isn’t Sanchez, it’s Ryan, he’s an awful coach, Smith won’t do much better.

Man I just got done making fun of the Bills QB problems! I might have to take back what I said about them! The Jets might be in worse shape than the Bills LOL! I’m not sure what these teams are thinking? Honestly neither of these teams can’t find at least 1 decent QB? It’s almost like they are trying to suck! I feel bad for the fans for both of those teams!

  26. nastyn8770 says: Aug 24, 2013 10:33 PM

They were hopeless regardless of this injury. Throw McElroy in there and watch him go.

  27. fordmandalay says: Aug 24, 2013 10:35 PM

This is the best possible solution to the Jets QB problem – there was no good way for them to sit Sanchez, without making the front office look bad for signing him to that stupid contract, making Ryan look bad for tying himself to Sanchez, and making Sanchez feel bad for being beaten out by a rookie for the starting job. Everybody wins.

  28. vincentbojackson says: Aug 24, 2013 10:37 PM

If they’re not careful people are going to stop referring to the Jets as this year’s team to beat.

  29. vincentbojackson says: Aug 24, 2013 10:39 PM

Early reports are Sanchez suffered a broken headband.

  30. saints4life57 says: Aug 24, 2013 10:39 PM

Wait I take back what I just said! Sanchez is a pretty smart guy! Now that he’s hurt we can’t blame him for sucking so bad!

  31. heeeeelzfan says: Aug 24, 2013 10:41 PM

Gotta hand it to Rex. This was one way to solve his QB controversy. Throw Sanchez out there late in this meaningless scrimmage game and hope for the…well, you know. To Geno fans everywhere: “Buyer Beware.”

With the first pick in the 2014 NFL draft the New York Jets select Jadeveon Clowney, defensive end, South Carolina.

  33. jiggy3198 says: Aug 24, 2013 10:58 PM

It is an absolute freaking train wreck in NY.

  34. jiggy3198 says: Aug 24, 2013 11:00 PM

This is what happens when you play the quarterback in the fourth quarter with your fourth string offense of line. Rex Ryan is a joke.

  35. jiggy3198 says: Aug 24, 2013 11:01 PM

With the first pick in the 2014 NFL draft the New York Jets take……

  36. jrcoop says: Aug 24, 2013 11:02 PM

This could make it difficult to challenge the Patriots for the division title this year.

  37. mrtreyseven says: Aug 24, 2013 11:06 PM

quick question to all you draft experts if they have the first pick what good for their offense do the Jets do gain for drafting Clowney….would they offense be in the same boat…..just saying that would be dumb as Hell for the jets to draft clowney when they could have Boyd or Bridgewater

  38. pekkle007 says: Aug 24, 2013 11:10 PM

Rex & Izdik wanted Geno. Now they got their wish.

  39. fruitcovejag says: Aug 24, 2013 11:17 PM

What can I say about the Jets that Rex hasn’t? They’re going to win 10 Super Bowls in a row and Mark Sanchez doesn’t suck… JETS LOL!

  44. ptownbearsfan420 says: Aug 24, 2013 11:45 PM

Pretty bad when Jamarcus Russel looks like a better option than anyone on your current roster. Come to think of it, isn’t he looking for a job..?

  45. pisano says: Aug 24, 2013 11:46 PM

Who cares about Sanchez, he’s nothing to worry about, as a matter of fact if he can’t go it will be a blessing to the Jets, they’ll have all the reason they need to sit him. The guy that should be getting the reps is Matt Simms, no other QB on that team has the arm strength or poise that this kid has, he’s a keeper, if not your first string QB, he’s better than anyone else they have, and seems to be much smarter than the other QB’s.

  46. baxman89 says: Aug 24, 2013 11:49 PM

Is it weird I’m rooting for Sanchez. Dude has put up with a lot of drama queens, terrible offensive coordinators, and minimal talent. I know he hasn’t been the best, but I hope he rebounds and sticks it to Geno, Rex, and their new power drunk GM. I’m out.

  47. realhoove50 says: Aug 24, 2013 11:49 PM

  53. mannyicey says: Aug 25, 2013 12:14 AM

Forget the question of who will be the QB for opening day- I want to know who will be the head coach! I am by no means a Jets fan, but people pay money to see this team play, right? I mean, this is like seeing someone on the side of the road getting robbed. It’s unjust continuing to have Rex Ryan as your head coach while people are spending money to see that team play.

  54. 1uniquename says: Aug 25, 2013 12:38 AM

As a dolphin fan I must say I’m glad the fins have at least some hope going into the season unlike both the N.Y.teams in our division.

  56. stiller9305 says: Aug 25, 2013 12:40 AM

  57. fryeways says: Aug 25, 2013 12:41 AM

I have to imagine Matt Moore, Brian Hoyer, Chad Henne, and about 6 other backups and free agents would be the best QB for the Jets in 2013.

  58. officialgame says: Aug 25, 2013 12:46 AM

  70. dlk47823 says: Aug 25, 2013 1:57 AM

The team won a game that was very important to the jets and Giants.
Coughlin said before kickoff that this was an important gane for the Giants and that he wanted a crisp, error free offense and defense.
Jets clearly outplayed them for the majority of the game, defense came up big and Matt Simms was great in the end!

  71. orivar says: Aug 25, 2013 2:21 AM

Rex is making stupid decisions. What did he think was going to happen? Play your potential starting QB with a line that might not make the roster, Sanchez never had a pocket when he was in, either was running or getting hit on the throw.

He made the good throws that show why he should be in the league (it’s the stupid mistakes that make him bad) but this was an awful awful decision.

  72. kelsey59 says: Aug 25, 2013 2:40 AM

Christy Simms comes in and easily throws a TD and then A 70 harder out of his own end zone, to lead them to the win. I don’t see a QB competition.
