Michael Irvin says it’s stupid for Michael Vick not to slide

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick says he’s going to make the most of his running abilities without worrying about injuries, and no one is going to talk him out of playing the way he wants to play.

But Michael Irvin would like to try.

Irvin, the Hall of Fame former Cowboys receiver, told Sporting News that he saw Vick take an unnecessary hit in the preseason game against the Panthers, and it was frustrating for Irvin to see Vick failing to take care of his body.

“It’s stupid,” Irvin said. “You cannot be this stupid. You cannot be this dumb. It’s impossible. Your [butt] has been hurt every year. Stop putting your body on the line like that.”

Irvin said that other than John Elway’s helicopter, he doesn’t ever want to see a quarterback putting his body on the line.

“The only time you do it—when John Elway did it in the Super Bowl. That’s it,” Irvin said. “When the Super Bowl game is on the line, and it’s third-and-whatever and you need that first down, you stick your head in there. Other than that, anywhere else, you slide and give it up.”

If Vick doesn’t listen, he may not last 16 games in Chip Kelly’s offense.

  1. Michael Irvin doesn’t quite say it gracefully, but fair point. If you’re hurt all the time your solution isn’t to get more aggressive with your running.

  2. It’s not that Vick doesn’t want to slide, it’s that he actually does not know how to slide. Instead, he dives forward and it looks awkward each time he does it.

  3. Vick gets banged up in the pocket to. Vick is at his best when he gambles and gets away with it. That’s his game. Irvin isn’t wrong, but it’s not like Vick hasn’t probably been hearing that since being a freshman at VT.

  4. I am waiting patiently for Michael Irvin’s self help book to arrive at my door. I hear it includes tidbits on not only QB slides but how to properly address the police and an entire section on dry cleaning fur coats!

    Well done, sir, well done!

  6. Speed guys value their legs more than any part of the body. After Vick broke his leg versus the Ravens back in 2003 on that turf, I really believe psychologically he fears his cleats getting jammed on the turf or grass if he slides.

  7. “and Michael Irvin knows Stuipd!”

Is there irony in the above quoted post with its misspelling of ‘stupid’ ? 🙂

  8. Supposedly, and this does nothing short of blow my mind, Vick doesn’t even know HOW to slide! Every time he goes down its head first, and that is pure idiocy. I’m sure if Vick were standing still, he could fall backwards right onto his butt, but why is it that when he is moving he all of a sudden can’t fall backwards onto his rear end and get down? There are a couple million 5 year olds playing tee ball out there that can teach Vick how to slide…

  9. Probably because he broke his ankle/foot, trying to slide … when he played with the Falcons.

  10. The omnipotent wizard of all football knowledge, Mr. Irvin, has been kind enough to share some of his insightful thoughts with us.

    We are blessed.

  11. I hate having Vick as the face of my team…there, I said it. Only consolation is that I’ll be a fan a lot longer than he will be a quarterback.

  12. its actually smart not to slide if your mike vick…think about it..if you play bad and get CUT when your healty..no money..injured reserve….paid in full…#JustSayin…#HTTR

  13. Amen Micheal!! For those of us who have played this game at a high level we know what Mike Vick is Risking and is no good on the IR all the time!!!

  14. >>gopblows> I share your sentiment… Vick has been coached by some of baseball best on proper sliding technique… the Atlanta baseball players coached him, as well as J.Roll from the Phillies… getting his cleats caught in the turf, and breaking his leg sliding during that Ravens game… well that may be a big part of Mike not sliding.

  15. Which is worse…Being immobile QB and getting his constantly? Or being a mobile QB and getting hit constantly?

News Flash: Football is a contact sport.

  16. @kd75

What a perceptive comment. Obviously, Vick’s running ability trumps Aikman’s toughness and accuracy as a QB in your mind. Let’s see, three rings or a felony conviction. Which is more desirable?

It’s stupid to be in a motel room with a half dozen hookers and a bunch of coke, but some people………..

Lord have mercy already!!! I guess you and everyone else that has some snarky comment to make about Michael Irvin are perfect and don’t have a part of your life that you would like to take back? Jeez that was like 25 years ago!!! So based on him not being “perfect” like all you commenters he aught not have an opinion on something that is fairly obvious???

Our chances of becoming a good office will depend on Mike staying healthy and limiting his turno
    _______________

I’d say your chances aren’t looking good.

  19. forget this macho crap and run out of bounds(run to see another maybe td play). Slide early, trent green got 2 BAD concussion even doing this. Did he slide late or maybe he didn’t. Not to blame him.

  20. I agree 100% it is stupid. No matter how you slice it, you need to make smart decisions. The offense runs around the QB and you want your leader to set examples of smart play.

  21. “It’s stupid,” Irvin said. “You cannot be this stupid. You cannot be this dumb. It’s impossible. Your [butt] has been hurt every year. Stop putting your body on the line like that.”

    Vick can be that stupid.

    I think you misspelled awesome.

  23. Hey Michael, it’s also pretty stupid to be smoking crack… OH I forgot, that was your FRIEND’S crack pipe the cops found in your car. Come on, man.

  24. Well Mike Vick is never going to be mistaken as being some kind of genius. As far as I’m concerned if he’s stupid enough to get himself hurt then I’m stupid enough to laugh at him when it happens. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!

  25. Its very important for Michael Irvin to use the word “stupid” in relation to Michael Vick. Its the one word most “fans” use in relation to Vick.

And these days, its really important that analysts do their best to sound like “fans” and not former players.

Former players merely played the game, but fans have mastered fantasy football and Play Station.
