Two first-quarter picks for Geno Smith

Geno Smith is not making the most of his opportunity to win the Jets’ quarterback competition.

Smith, who is starting for the first time this preseason on Saturday night against the Giants, threw two first-quarter interceptions. On the first interception, Smith threw behind receiver Ryan Spadola, and although Spadola grabbed for it, Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara took it away. On Smith’s second interception, he made a bad decision to throw into double coverage over the middle, and his pass sailed well over the head of the intended receiver Kellen Winslow and into the hands of Giants safety Stevie Brown. (Brown appeared to suffer a knee injury on the return and had to be helped off the field.)

Although the Jets seem to want Smith to win the quarterback competition, Smith has missed time with an ankle injury and hasn’t played particularly well when he did take the field in the preseason.

Time is running out on the Jets’ quarterback race, and Mark Sanchez is in the lead.

  2. jetsclaps says: Aug 24, 2013 7:57 PM

And he still looks better than Eli out there

  3. keylimelight says: Aug 24, 2013 8:03 PM

Well, Geno did get a TD on his first drive–8 plays, 80 yds. That’s at least worth mentioning.

Speading too much time in the ladiesroom.

    Is Rex watching this?

  10. corkspop says: Aug 24, 2013 8:14 PM

Should have been a first rounder? Should have been first pick overall? Should at least have been first QB picked?? Where are all you experts now?

  11. keylimelight says: Aug 24, 2013 8:19 PM

At this point in his career, the only excuse Sanchez has for interceptions is that he just cannot cut it. But Geno? he’s a rookie, give him some time and cut him some slack.

  12. doall24 says: Aug 24, 2013 8:20 PM

jets better scour the waiver wire.

  13. beckzhere says: Aug 24, 2013 8:22 PM

I feel bad for Jets fans. I really do.

  14. badguy711 says: Aug 24, 2013 8:22 PM

Do the Jets even have a QB Coach? if they do, maybe time for a new one?

  15. ryann252013 says: Aug 24, 2013 8:22 PM

Basically he is a rookie. Inconsistent.

He needs some more work, and keep in mind this is his first pro start.

Probably gonna be Sanchez starting Game 1 though.

  16. tellemallrex says: Aug 24, 2013 8:24 PM

Sigh, looks like another season with Sanchez!

I do not believe Geno is anywhere near ready to be an NFL starter. His play so far is horrible. Everyone is looking for the next big thing, and sometimes these guys just arn’t ready. He looks to be one of the guys who benefit sitting for a few years then taking over. McElroy is the Jets best options and they don’t want to even give the guy a shot. Whats to lose when you suck and are way behind in talent anyway.
Maybe they can grab Kolb for an upgrade via trade! (yeah thats a joke!)

  18. citiciti says: Aug 24, 2013 8:27 PM

    Memo to Jets
    Geno sucks
    Bernie Kosar

  19. DonkeyStick says: Aug 24, 2013 8:27 PM

And people ripped Philadelphia for not taking him at 4

  20. micknangold says: Aug 24, 2013 8:33 PM

You guys can’t really think he’s a bust already because of one rough preseason start, right? Not everyone is ready to start immediately. Just because recently some guys have been doesn’t mean every rookie QB has to be starter from day one.

  21. tennesseeoilers says: Aug 24, 2013 8:33 PM

The Jets should’ve picked up Vince Young on the cheap when they had the chance. (A couple weeks ago, that would’ve been funny.)

  22. nomoreseasontix says: Aug 24, 2013 8:34 PM

The only reason Geno was taken before the late rounds was the lack of quality QB prospects in that draft. He’s truly a fourth or fifth round project. Nobody in their wildest dreams thought he was a guy who’d make an immediate impact. He needs a few years to learn and polish himself.
If the Jets put all their eggs in that basket, they’re gonna have a rude awakening.

  23. youarejealousof6rings says: Aug 24, 2013 8:35 PM

LOL! The Jets sure know how to find them.

  24. suhloo90 says: Aug 24, 2013 8:36 PM

Like Geno’s face, his preseason, and the Jets season overall its looking ugly.

  25. johnnyjagfan says: Aug 24, 2013 8:36 PM

Now Rex has nobody in the media able to whip him for starting Sanchez Week One. He’s put the kid out there, he’s clearly not ready. Sanchez gives them the best, yet slim, chance of winning football games.

  26. tolan04 says: Aug 24, 2013 8:37 PM

Yeah bills made the wrong choice taking ej over this guy. Lets hear it again. I know he’s a rookie and its early on his career but it just doesn’t seem this guy gets it.

  27. swaggyy says: Aug 24, 2013 8:42 PM

Title could just be “Jets QB throws 2 first Qtr INTs” and it would make sense for either one.

  28. meatheadsmakemelaugh says: Aug 24, 2013 8:43 PM

This guy was the most overhyped QB In the draft, played in the big12 who plays no defense at all, head case. Glad I’m not a fan of the Jets.

We thought he was a bust before tonight. Now it is just being confirmed.

  30. lordfletcher says: Aug 24, 2013 8:46 PM

still can’t comprehend why anyone would have taken him before the 3rd/4th round…

    only the Jets

  31. thebigtim2012 says: Aug 24, 2013 8:48 PM

Most of the great ones Brady, young, etc had a chance to sit for at least a year and learn their craft at the pro level. These kids are getting thrown to the wolves day one and instead if developing they are being called a bust and tossed away. It’s pretty sad.

  33. seatownballers says: Aug 24, 2013 8:53 PM

Jets will be kicking themselves for years over that draft pick. I honestly thought they should have drafted rb Christine Michael in the second round. With him and ivory as the backs it would have taken major pressure off any qb. Fyi- at this point jets should start McElroy

  34. mrwalterisgod says: Aug 24, 2013 8:53 PM

2? You mean that’s all he threw?

  35. lennydpocketqb says: Aug 24, 2013 8:53 PM

    So many Genoceptions.

  37. lbroberts123 says: Aug 24, 2013 8:59 PM

    Well graham Harrell is available.

  38. tjacks7 says: Aug 24, 2013 9:05 PM

I see Joe Namath at quite a few games. Maybe give him a call?

  39. tjacks7 says: Aug 24, 2013 9:06 PM

If you can’t beat out Mark Sanchez, you may want to consider a different career path.

  40. joecoz17 says: Aug 24, 2013 9:12 PM

EJ Manuel will be better than Geno

  41. micknangold says: Aug 24, 2013 9:22 PM

Yea one half of football confirms it.

  42. brownsclown says: Aug 24, 2013 9:28 PM

Where’s Braylon? Getting popcorn? Getting his ‘granite hands’ polished?

  43. stevent92 says: Aug 24, 2013 9:44 PM

That is an improvement over Sanchez.

  44. jburrell4 says: Aug 24, 2013 9:47 PM

Geno or Mark… Doesn’t matter – I picked up Tampa Bay’s defense for week 1!

  45. milwaukeeguy says: Aug 24, 2013 9:52 PM

I tend to keep my comments fairly even keeled. I’m a little too old to post simplistic crap like ‘this guy sucks’ or ‘this team sucks’, but I think I speak for most everyone on this site by saying the Jets are going to be a really bad team this year. Jets are definitely in the Clowney sweepstakes.

  46. n001363 says: Aug 25, 2013 1:27 AM

This is why smart GM’s didn’t take him. Jets could’ve found a better quarterback in later rounds.

  47. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Aug 25, 2013 5:33 PM

Sanchez is injured and Smith was plan B so now what?
