The kicking competition in Arizona has ended. (There was one?)
The Cardinals have parted ways with veteran kicker Dan Carpenter, who signed after being released by the Dolphins. According to Kent Somers of azcentral.com, Carpenter was one of 10 players released today by the Cardinals.
A 26-yard field goal try by Carpenter was blocked during Saturday’s preseason game against the Chargers. Per Somers, Carpenter also wasn’t impressive in his lone practice with the team.
But veteran Jay Feely shouldn’t completely exhale; the dalliance with Carpenter shows that the Cardinals are at least considering the possibility of upgrading the position -- and possibly downgrading the $1.5 million base salary owed to Feely.
Also gone are tackle Joe Caprioglio, receiver Jarett Dillard, receiver Nick Edwards, center Deveric Gallington, defensive end Cordian Hagans, linebacker Korey Jones, defensive tackle Jonathan Mathis, quarterback Caleb TerBush, and cornerback Ronnie Yell.
Finally, linebacker Dan Giordano (toe) has moved to the reserve/PUP list, shutting him down through Week Six, at the earliest.
The Cardinals’ roster currently stands at 76. They need to reduce one more body by Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
