Kevin Williams walks off after shot to knee

AP

There’s a reason few veterans want to play in second halves of preseason games, and Kevin Williams just showed why.

The Vikings defensive tackle just limped off the field under his own power, after taking a shot to the right knee from 49ers backup guard Joe Looney.

Looney appeared to deliberately go low on Williams, far enough away from the action of a play that it wasn’t necessary.

Williams was checked by trainers, and won’t return to tonight’s game.

  1. That was about as big of a cheap shot as you can get. Absolutely NO reason to go low on that hit.

  2. Complete cheap shot, trying to end Kevin Williams career by taking out his knees. Looney deserves to be suspended.

Looked like a clean hit to me.

Not surprised by this comment as it reflects on the class of this fanbase.

@pack13queenso….that Favre signing still burns deep….I love it.

    ———-

LOL….burns? We got to watch Favre end your “magical” run with one of his patented, boneheaded playoff INTs, then went on to win the Super Bowl the next year while he finished the year out of the playoffs and on the injury table.

Which then set you guys up to reach for that noodle-armed Ponder chick with the 12th overall pick in the next draft.

    “Burns”? Hahahahahaha.

  5. What a cheap shot.

Funny that when SF does stuff like that, or when they get 3 personal fouls on a drive, everybody is mum about it or says they play hard. But Lord regret another team like the Raiders or Lions do it. Then it’s a huge deal.

Yeah. Because those teams don’t win. But as a ‘9er fan……Looney is gone. He’s a cheap, cheap player.

  7. @jcbadger34 My point gets proven again. This rivalry was over the minute Favre donned a purple jersey. OVER!!

You have a scumbag fan base. Everyone knows it. Wisconsin is a dump. Matter of fact…have you ever watched a football game and at the start they always pan the city the game is played in? Example…”Welcome to the beautiful skyline in Minnesota, Miami, New York, Chicago, etc. Have you ever seen that done for Green Bay? lol…nope.

  8. Once again, niner fans you impress me.

A couple comment from Niner fans saying the shot was cheap and the player was dirty.

Last year, when Minny beat you — all I saw was praise for Minny — no crying and no “we beat ourselves”.

Obviously, you have a great team and will have a great season.

Looking forward to you starting 1 and 0 again, and the excuses that will follow from “another set of fans”.

  9. @jcbadger34 My point gets proven again. This rivalry was over the minute Favre donned a purple jersey. OVER!!

    ————–

This rivalry was over when we won our first Super Bowl, because we all know the Vikings are never going to match that one…..let alone four…..let alone the ones we’re going to win in the future.

  10. It was a crap shot. Doesn’t reflect their fans or organization. Just the dip stick player trying to make a roster spot.

  11. DC —- a true viking fan….can only get satisfaction when a different team has to beat rivals for them. Gonna be a long season for you, brother.

  12. 1976 – there’s not much to show. At least there’s a fan base that doesn’t need the local businesses to prevent blackouts. Remember when the Vikings playoff game would have been blacked out w TJack without General Mills coming to the rescue? Some of the worst bandwagon fans I’ve ever seen.

  13. @vikings1976…Wisconsin is a dump…

Tell that to your neighbor who probably has a cabin in Wisconsin, just like half the people I know from Minnesota.

  14. Cheap shot? What goes around comes around. Jared Allen nearly ended Lance Louis’ career last year on one of the dirtiest hits I’ve ever seen.

    Karma is Karma.

  15. @dcviking:

Totally agree. As much as I want to beat the 49ers, I can’t help but acknowledge their fan base is mostly filled with realists. 49ers are class act fans. Much more than their Seahawk counterparts.

  16. Massive respect to the 9ers fanbase. In victory or defeat they keep it classy. Then there are packer fans…who are the complete polar opposite.

  17. As a Niner fan and a former prospective college football player whose career was cut short by a cheap shot to the knee, it’s disappointing to see such an apparent lack of class to a team I love and a game that should be played with the utmost respect for your opponent.

  18. Niners fan here. That “block” was embarrassing. Don’t know if Looney is cheap or stupid. No wonder why he is a distant 2nd/3rd string.

  19. It was cheap…. not sure it wasn’t called ?… Not to mention second half of a preseason game ?… I mean sure your trying to make the team but that’s defiantly not the way… I wouldn’t let one player make me think the 9ers aren’t still a great team or any other NFC west …there’s no room in the game for this crap

  20. I’m sure he’s already been called out by his team mates. That was uncalled for and nobody on the Niners wants that happening to them. That wasn’t just cheap, that was weak.

  21. You guys are funny, take one comment from a person with a screen name that appears to be a Packer Fan and you go psychotic on an entire fan base, State and or city.

Seriously you guys/gals need to get a life.

Just remember people, every group or fan base in this case, has its share of undesirables. Most of the time rival fans banter back and forth and its fun but some fans take it way too far.

    Its a game people.

  22. Yah know, Vikings1976 is right. Now that I think of it, I’ve never seen the city of Green Bay panned as part of a broadcast. They never seem to take the camera past the fans in the parking lot. Hmmm.

  23. As a 49er fan, I couldn’t agree more, it was a stupid/cheep move and could have ruined Williams Career. Looney is like the 3rd center and deserves to be cut. Hope Kilgore takes his job.

  24. @vikings1976

“you have a scumbag fanbase”? wow….deep. Have you traveled outside of Anoka? Blaine? Apple Valley?…..The two states are so different (not really). FYI….Neither Minnesota nor Wi have an actual skyline. Did you really just compare Minnesota (state) to other Cities! that actually are relevant? This is football, where the players play the game, and we just watch. Chill……

  25. You have a scumbag fan base. Everyone knows it. Wisconsin is a dump. Matter of fact…have you ever watched a football game and at the start they always pan the city the game is played in? —————————-
Ohhhhhhhhh…so THAT’S how I figure out if the place I live is pleasant or has any value. It’s all about SKYLINES! Here I thought it had to do with how much I liked the actual content of my surroundings. Turns out, cities are only worth living if they have a skyline. Thanks for the enlightenment bro. Newsflash: I live in Minneapolis and think it sucks and the people are arrogant jerks. Maybe I never looked at the skyline though.

  26. 49ers are known for using questionable chop blocks ever since Bill Walsh coached in the 80’s. Back then they had smaller pulling OL like Jesse Sapolu and Randy Cross and taught them to cut defenders at their knees or lower. It wasn’t popular then, and it’s not popular now. But it’s what the 49ers are known for. Nothing new.

One of the greatest plays of NFL history was when the Vikings got “Farved” vs the saints. So, to tell you the truth, we’re glad you signed him so that he could be there at the moment of truth to keep you from getting to the SB, just like he did to us so many times.

    Minnesota isn’t a city.

    Madison > Minneapolis

    Not. Close.

  29. No place for that in the NFL. No idea what Looney was thinking, but it was completely uncalled for. 49ers fans won’t stand for that kind of behavior, and I hope the team doesn’t either.

  30. And to the same Seahawks, Lions, Giants and Saints fans with nothing better to do than click refresh on PFT and talk trash in every post that even remotely has something to do with the 49ers, maybe the rest of the NFL bags on your teams but not ours because they like our fan base better.

Or maybe it’s because, you know, your teams are actually dirty instead of having a few bad apples.

  31. Looney went to college at Wake Forest, where they have been pulling this crap since Jim Grobe arrived. Between Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, its a wonder anyone comes out of the ACC with their knees intact.

Sad to know that some habits die hard.

  32. Look, that hit to Williams was a clear rule violation and will be dealt with soon enough. Double barrel discipline coming, most likely either with league fine, Harbaugh rant and cut, or both, but I bet the league calls SF and tells them if he is not cut he is getting fined and/or suspended so the team simply drops the hammer, which is was poised to do anyway. Bye bye Looney.

    =========================

Actually, I have. They show downtown Green Bay, or the Fox River, etc…

On a related note, have you ever watched a football game and at the start they pan past the beautiful Lombardi trophies the team playing the game has won? Example … “That’s the hall of fame here in the stadium showing the 4 Lombardi trophies Green Bay has won?”

Have you ever seen that for the Vikings?

    Nope.

Class huh? Be sure to tell the guy that posts as ‘greengaypackqueers’ he’s classier than Packers fans. Seriously, learn what the word means before you use it.

  35. Vike76 thats what you come back with is skyline are you serious? You have a state that doesnt even support your team. Who cares if you have a tall building we have a succesful football franchise with a stadium that is the mecca in the NFL and is on the bucket list of fans to see a game at, just like Wrigley or Fenway. Speaking of dumps isnt that what your collapsible stadium is known for, even by your own fans?

  36. @mn1288 –

It may be a long season for the Vikings indeed — lots of question marks and lots that can go either way (good or bad).

I know you’re concerned as well. Being as you apparently root for the Vikings to win the other 14 weeks when they aren’t playing the Packers — since you don’t want your rivals to lose to other teams.

lets compare apples to apples, the hit on lewis was high it was in a regular season game and it what they call an ear whole shot, may have been cheap but didnt end his career, the shot on williams last nite, was in a preseason game, it was cheap and it was at the knees which can end a guys career, compairing those plays are not one in the same

That embarrassing Viking performance last night further reinforced how hapless and tasteless they truly are.

*******************************************you said that yesterday, get some new material and worry about your swiss cheese -o-line which they might start pulling FA’s off the street to plug the leaking dike
