Matt Leinart to sign with Bills

Matt Leinart never developed into the kind of NFL starter that the Cardinals anticipated when they took him 10th overall in 2006, but his NFL career will continue all the same.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the Bills will sign Leinart to help them shore up the quarterback spot with both E.J. Manuel and Kevin Kolb battling injuries. Leinart and John Beck were both in Buffalo to work out for the team on Sunday, which leaves Beck to look elsewhere for a job. That could wind up being in the AFC East, where the Jets are reportedly interested after Mark Sanchez injured his shoulder in the latest episode of their quarterbacking soap opera.

A league source confirmed to PFT that Leinart is joining the Bills and adds that he could wind up starting in Week One against the Patriots.

Leinart played in two games for the Raiders last season and spent the two seasons before that as a backup with the Texans. He got one start in Houston in 2011 after Matt Schaub was lost for the year with a foot injury, but broke his collarbone and T.J. Yates steered the Texans into the playoffs.

Leinart will join Jeff Tuel, an undrafted rookie, on the roster for this week’s final preseason games. Whether he lasts beyond that will likely have to do with how well Manuel and Kolb progress in their recoveries.

I’m surprised he passed up his chance to join the Jets and chase coeds with Sanchez like the old days at USC.

The only way they win a game this year is if the opposition forfeits.

Matt will be glad when the football season finally begins and he can sit back and relax. All this off season travel and tryouts wear you down.

And with the stroke of a pen, the Bills have now employed 4 of the top 10 picks of the 2006 NFL draft – and both busted QB selections.

LOL, what fellow noodle arm Steve Walsh didn’t answer the phone? They might as well have signed Pee Wee Herman, he has probably built up his arm strength or at least his wrist! LOL

Here is the skinny on Leinart. When he played for Denny Green, he posted really nice numbers during his rookie year. he posted a QB rating of 74, completed 57% of his passes for 2,547 yards, 11 TDs and 12 Ints. Not a bad beginning with promise if developed correctly for the NFL. Under Whisenhunt during the next season, Leinart was shuttled off to the side in favor or Warner, a move that made a lot of sense since Warner played at a higher level than Leinart. Evidently, Whisenhunt was not bothering to develop Leinart and took the easy way out with Warner who in turn transformed Whistenhunt’s 60/40 run/pass offense into a 65/35 pass/run offense that Warner then took to the Super Bowl.

It will be interesting to see if Leinart has finally shook off the bad juju that Whisenhunt dumped on his as Whisenhunt’s special QB development training. If not, Leinart will not be long in a Bills uniform. If he does, we may again see some of the brilliance he produce at USC and his rookie year with the Cards.

Leinart is happy he finally found a place to not play this year.

  22. bills399 says: Aug 25, 2013 7:30 PM

please don’t say leinart has a noodle arm, it just proves u know nothing about football, leinart actually does have an NFL arm.

Has anyone considered that Sunday, September 22 could be an aerial showdown between Sanchez and Leinart? The thought is post apocalyptic.

And now begins the Legend of Leinart.

Picking up EX Arizona Cardinals QB’s. How bad can it get. Oh I forgot. There still Skelton out there.

  26. mackcarrington says: Aug 25, 2013 9:13 PM

One of the questions Leinart asked before he signed was if there was good surfing on Lake Erie.

  27. edavidberg says: Aug 25, 2013 9:39 PM

Bills got lucky here, Leinert actually could be respectable in a pinch. Beck on the other hand plays at a Caleb Hanie/Tyler Palko level. He is absolutely god awful.

  28. fordmandalay says: Aug 25, 2013 10:56 PM

Leinart was so happy that he was going to hive-five the coed across from him in the hot tub, but checked down to the one sitting next to him.

  29. billsboy88 says: Aug 26, 2013 1:54 AM

    Gonna be a long season

  30. keepyerstickontheice says: Aug 26, 2013 7:12 AM

He must feel lucky to be riding pine behind an undrafted QB from Washington State.

Maybe he can go tailgate in that limo that has the hot tub in the back.
