Ricky Stanzi among 14 cut by Chiefs

Ricky Stanzi AP

The Chiefs made 14 of the 15 moves they need to make by Tuesday’s deadline to get to 75, and they got rid of a quarterback in the process.

Among the cuts was Ricky Stanzi, a project of the previous administration.

He was made expendable when the Chiefs traded for Alex Smith and signed free agent Chase Daniel, but he lost the third spot to undrafted rookie Tyler Bray.

The Chiefs also released veteran wide receiver Terrance Copper, along with the following players: Defensive back Vince Agnew, defensive end Miguel Chavis, offensive lineman Ryan Durand, offensive lineman Hutch Eckerson, defensive back Otha Foster III, offensive lineman A.J. Hawkins, defensive end Rob Lohr, cornerback Kamaal McIlwain, running back  Jordan Roberts, wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker, defensive back Neiko Thorpe and fullback Braden Wilson.

    Don’t worry Ricky, you’re still America’s qb

Kid showed a lot of heart at Iowa, tough for any young QB to go through all the coaches he did in KC. Wish him well & hope he gets a shot with another team.

They should have kept Neiko Thorpe.

Brees wants an explanation. Khan is fascinated.

When he didn’t get any playing time last year despite historical ineptitude at the QB position, I think that spelled the end of the Ricky Stanzi era in KC.

Ricky Stanzi got his job because Kirk Ferentz and Scott Pioli were BFFs. He was horrible last year in preseason, a little less horrible this year but still got beat out by an undrafted free agent. Maybe he’ll land somewhere else but I’m actually more surprised that Terrance Copper got the boot

Not shocking that Bray made the cut even as a UFA. Guy has an arm and if he could get his head together could be a decent QB.

Could Stanzi be worse than Colt McCoy?

    James Vandenberg > Ricki Stanzi

Vandenberg should have left for the NFL after his fantasitc 2011 season, before he lost ten fellow Hawkeyes and several coaches to the NFL. The kid stayed in school but would have been a mid round pick had he left. In 2012 the Hawks were in a rebuilding year with a whole new offense and no veteran talent. Now he’s an undrafted scrub with no chance at an NFL roster.

That could happen. At 7-9. A playoff win is far less likely.

Too bad, so sad. Maybe he will catch on with the Iowa Barnstormers.

I couldnt figure out why he didn’t get a shot last season as awful as our qbs were….well I figured it out when I watched him in the last pre-season game. Having a new oc every season probably didn’t do him any favors as well. Ricky do you hear that ringing? Its the AFL calling……or maybe J! …E! ….T!….S!

Stanzi was the reason Pioli fired Haley. Pioli wanted Stanzi to replace Cassel when he went down with the injury but Haley refused. Granted he only option was Tyler Palko but still Pioli was torked Haley couldn’t coach up Stanzi. 2 years later and Pioli is still looking like a fool, compliments if Todd Haley. Thanks Todd, it took your demise for Pioli to hire Crennel but in the long run KC got what was best, John Dorsey. Go Chiefs!

Stanzi should of been starting last year

What kind of water you all drinking in KC? All AFC West teams are on their way to a title… Denver by at least 3 games..

  25. sf546 says: Aug 26, 2013 3:55 AM

Grown men named Ricky deserve to be cut.

  26. kepickle says: Aug 26, 2013 4:27 AM

only reason why Bray wasn’t drafted was because couldn’t keep his head in the game & when he did at Tennessee he was a great in fact if he would have while in college he would have been 1st or 2nd rounder for sure

  27. joetoronto says: Aug 26, 2013 5:34 AM

No team in the league has gone as long as the Chiefs have without a decent QB.

    Alex Smith, lol.

  28. msclemons67 says: Aug 26, 2013 5:53 AM

I’m a bit surprised they cut Stanzi instead of Alex Smith.

  29. cmdrsmooth says: Aug 26, 2013 7:30 AM

Explains why this team had the first pick in the draft. Non of these players would make a division 3 collage team.

  30. jredshoes says: Aug 26, 2013 10:37 AM

Kepickle by using your logic if you put boobs on my uncle that would make him my aunt. Bray was not drafted by anyone for exactly the reasons you state. That didn’t want a Ryan Leaf. big talent and a head case. According to all reports being undrafted has caused him to grow up and he’s been nothing but a pro so far in KC, so hopefully it will work for both parties

  31. jjackwagon says: Aug 26, 2013 1:19 PM

“No team in the league has gone as long as the Chiefs have without a decent QB.”

True but your Raiders are well on their way.

Smith > Flynn or Pryor…or both combined for that matter.
