Chip Kelly: DeSean Jackson will return punts, just not in preseason

DeSean Jackson AP

DeSean Jackson said at the start of training camp that he plans to be the Eagles’ primary punt returner. In the preseason, Jackson hasn’t returned any punts.

But Eagles coach Chip Kelly says that’s just being prudent. Although Kelly doesn’t want to risk Jackson suffer an injury on a punt return in the preseason, Kelly confirmed today that Jackson will return punts in the regular season.

“There’s no point in exposing him in a preseason game,” Kelly said. “He’ll be out there at some point in time.”

Damaris Johnson handled the Eagles’ punt returns last season, and he has done a nice job returning punts for the Eagles in the preseason. So the Eagles have other options. But Jackson, who led the league in punt returns in 2009 and has four career touchdowns returning punts, is a spectacular player with the ball in his hands in space, and at some point this season he’ll get the chance to show that. Kelly, however, is smart enough to know that the preseason isn’t the right time.

So already, Chip Kelly demonstrates that he is smarter than Rex Ryan…

Tom Coughlin is in a dark room somewhere.

I don’t think Coughlin is as worried about Steve Weatherford as he was about Matt Dodge.

Take note Rex Ryan. This is how you protect your investments.

Kelly is saying and doing all the right things. As an Eagles fan I am excited to see what he brings to the table come season schedule but so far the chipper has been flawless. Been a long time since I have been this excited for a season (and I’m not expecting miracles just new and exciting eagles football!)

He is not making all the right moves he picked Vick to be starting QB but other then that he is doing pretty well

So picking the faster, stronger, more experienced QB that is the better choice for our offensive scheme is a bad move? Orrrrr are you just biased and still not able to get over the dog fighting crap? Either way with Chip in Vick’s ear I am excited for what we are going to see. Bottomline! Who are we as fans to tell a professional coach what the wrong or right decision is?

If it were up to me Foles wouldn’t play either. The Eagles have 5 QBs, they could let Barkley play the first half, let Dennis Dixon and G.J. Kinne each take a quarter.

Kelly knows he won’t have to expose Jackson on punt returns during the regular season either. He has been watching the Eagles D and knows they aren’t going to stop ANYBODY! !!

As if their defense will force any punts this season. Laughable.

Maybe they can be bailed out by the Dallas Cowboys dishing the ball?

I am loving Coach Kelly so far. He seems like a football guy and likes to surround himself with football guys. Every choice from hiring a navy seal trainer to not naming a QB has been dead on in my book. The team still has a ways to go, particularly the defense when it comes to talent and execution, but in a couple years this machine is gonna be a beast!!

I’m not mad, just realistic! Have you watched a game?

    P.S.
    The Eagles are my team.

Johnson had his bright spots in pre-season as far as returning punts but he also showed inconsistency as far as when to bring the ball out of the endzone and when to cut your losses and down it. I think this is a good decision

    @dennisund

If I said the Eagles defense is awesome this year, I would receive lots of thumbs up from clueless eagle homers however it wouldn’t make it true.

you guys can’t handle the truth. Owned again in 2013 by the cowboys. get over it!
