Jets cut Braylon Edwards, roster now at 75

rexbraylon Getty Images

The New York Jets’ final roster cut to reach the Tuesday limit of 75 players was a big name: Braylon Edwards.

Edwards, the wide receiver who has had three stints with the Jets, was released this morning. That got the Jets to exactly 75 players, the limit every team must reach by tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET.

For the 30-year-old Edwards, this may be the end of the road. He hasn’t been a regular starter since 2010, and given his lack of recent production and his knee problems, it’s entirely possible that no other team will pick him up now that the Jets have sent him packing.

Edwards was once considered one of the most promising receivers in the NFL. He was the third overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft, and he made the Pro Bowl in 2007. But he never came close to matching the success he had in that great 2007 season, and now he’s out of work.

Cya later Stonehands. That’s a shame I was hoping they would keep him.

Anyone Rex likes is going to be taken away.

So Braylon Edwards caught the axe, huh? On the plus side, at least he finally caught something.

  9. geefan1 says: Aug 26, 2013 12:37 PM

Wonder if he dropped his playbook on his way to Rex’s office…

  10. mylionsroaring says: Aug 26, 2013 12:38 PM

He has to be better than the Lions second third and fourth receiver options

How bad do you have to be to not make the Jets?

  12. jetsoptimist says: Aug 26, 2013 12:41 PM

I had a feeling he was the odd man out. The jets have some talented young receivers that they didn’t want to cut(spadola).

  17. logicaldawg says: Aug 26, 2013 12:49 PM

Is he allowed to take his “New York Essence” with him or does he have to leave that behind?

  18. twilson962 says: Aug 26, 2013 12:51 PM

…cuz Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, & Santonio “I would rather play anywhere else” Holmes are SOOO much better.

Braylon obviously isn’t that good anymore. If he every really was. But… there is a lack of overall talent on the Jets offense.

Oh well, the march to JaDeveon Clowney keeps on rolling,

Anyone else wonder how B.E. would fare with a QB to throw him passes? You know belichick is giving this guy serious consideration.

Lol doubt that very much. BB likes people who actually catch the ball instead of dropping it.

The Pats are fine with the receivers they have now. They will be a surprise this year to quite a lot of people I think.

  27. whosennext says: Aug 26, 2013 1:45 PM

I think he should have cut Rex Ryan instead. Only an idiot would put what is potentially your starting QB back into a meaningless football game and watch him go down with an injury. Not that the jets were going to the playoffs anyways. Until the organization gets smart and fires Rex foot fetish Ryan, they are going to be doomed.

  30. Jim says: Aug 26, 2013 1:59 PM

Perhaps he was cut now so his contract isn’t fully guaranteed when he’s on the roster week one. My guess is Braylon will be back week 2 if he’s healthy.

  36. brownsclown says: Aug 26, 2013 2:12 PM

I didn’t realize the Jets had enough talent at receiver to cut a player with ‘elite’ skills.

  37. cool10857 says: Aug 26, 2013 2:52 PM

The Jets front office should be embarrassed by the total lack of their ability to correctly evaluate player talent.

  38. dcapettini says: Aug 26, 2013 3:06 PM

I saw Edwards make some unbelievable catches and drop some that hit him in the numbers with no defensive back within 10 yards. You’d think that he fit the Jets perfectly.

  39. jkaflagg says: Aug 26, 2013 3:41 PM

Despite the flock of Internet haters, I thought he was still among their best receivers, drops and all…..can’t really stand with the Lose-for-Clowney conspiracy theorists either ; with Rex fighting for his job, can’t see him let a good player get away on a team with such limited options on offense….assume he’s counting on Holmes to come back big and one of the younger guys to blossom, although that could be problematic considering the uncertainty at QB….
