No ligament damage for Kevin Williams

AP

All things considered, it could have been much worse.

The Vikings announced that defensive tackle Kevin Williams suffered no ligament damage from last night’s low hit from 49ers backup guard Joe Looney.

“Kevin Williams suffered a hyperextension injury to his right knee in last night’s football game,” Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said in a statement distributed by the team. “An MRI exam today revealed a significant bone contusion as well as a posterior capsular strain. Kevin was fortunate in that there was no injury to any of his ligaments.”

There was no word about a time frame for his return. Williams was upset by the hit, which he should have been, but he can now breathe a sign of relief.

  1. Coming from a Packer fan, that’s good to hear. That hit was as dirty as they get, and I have nothing but respect for Williams.

  2. Good news, Williams is a class act and even at his present age is still a great player. Sounds like he’ll still be out a few weeks though, which stinks.

  3. KW……you are a pros pro……we will see you throwing the kitties aside Week1…..SKOL VIKINGS!!!

  4. It won’t be long before the Texans are getting the blame for this one as well.

Good to hear he’s not out long-term.

  5. does Tokyo and filthy share the same basement? Or is one the mailman and the other the red headed step child? Just curious because they both post awful quick to anything Vikings related.

    Good.

Now WHEN the Packers beat the Vikes twice this year there won’t be any of the usual excuses.
    _______

You mean like our starting quarterback was out and we had to start a guy who is now struggling to make the team as a gunner on punt returns at quarterback? Yeah, that is a lame one.

  7. Props to the Niners fans posting on PFT. I’ve seen nothing but remorse and disgust from them for that hit. Earning a rep for having classy fans, post by post. (And I mean that sincerely, in case anyone thinks it was an attempt at sarcasm.)

  8. It’s great he doesn’t have any ligament damage. He will be out for a few weeks. However, if he had ligament damage, his season would be over.

That would have snapped a lesser players leg in half, has that looney tick been fined yet?

    —————————————————-
Not yet, but the Vikes sent the tape of the incident into the league office for further evaluation

  10. If you don’t want to get hit and tackled, don’t play football…

Much like if you don’t want to get shot at, don’t join the military or law enforcement….or if you don’t particularly like fire, maybe the fire department is not a good place for you.

  11. Haha. Figures that filthymcnasty and tokyosandblaster are two of the top 5 comments. Usual Packer trolls. Sorry GB, but your team still isn’t good enough to make the SB this year. I try to cheer for the Packers once in awhile, but bloggers like you forces me not to.

Everyone deals with injuries. You don’t see the Packers fans using injuries and letting Randall Cobb sit out the last regular season game as the reason the Packers lost, by a last second field goal.

Is this horrific injury like one of those thingies?

Interesting – you ‘both’ commented at the same time. Pretty sad that you’re ‘both’ the same person with a different account. Oh the lengths that Packer fans will go to make themselves feel better…

  14. One time I was out in Wisconsin. Just out checking some things out. Toured a dairy farm/cheese place. And was just wierded out by the people there. They all wore these knee high boots. Finally I was puzzled enough, I had to ask. Why?…. Well, to my astonishment, the farmer there said, we do this so the sheep can’t get away. We tuck their back feet into these tall boots, and there’s no way they can get away then until we are done. I had never seen or heard of something like that until I was in Wisconsin. So my question here is… Tokyo, and filthy are you paying attention?? My question is… Why did that farmer say that they call that a “Saturday night Tokyo sandblaster?” And the last guy that actually got caught doing that was this filthymcnasty, and they actually bronzed a statue of him! Seriously, can you believe that? Makes me glad there’s a big river separating this great state of Minnesota from Wisconsin..

  15. Looney’s play was uncalled for, Viking fans have every reason to be upset. Looney has been terrible since he was over drafted last year ( in the fourth rd I believe). I’d cut him, but the niners back up OL are bums besides Kilgore and Synder, so I’m afraid he’s going to make the team unless niners can find someone on waivers.

Yes, there is a risk of injury playing this game but there is also a time and place when those injuries should not happen. Call it an unwritten rule or a gentlemans understanding but you just dont go after someones knees especially when the play is nowhere near them. Thats just a common understanding among players.

  19. Having K-Will out was Green Bays only chance to run for positive yards against the Vikings. I bet GB wishes they had a run stopper like Williams in their Swiss cheese D.

Maybe if Rick Spielman was such a wonderful magician he wouldn’t let his team get into a spot where that would happen.

That’s the reason why the Vikings went out and got Cassell this off season though.

  22. I can honestly say I am glad he is not injured, dont want injury to anyone.

That being said I find it very hypocritical some of the viking posters talking about class and the play on Williams when they themselves were as excited like a little puppy when Bulaga went down. They post their disgusting comments at a pace of 2 to 1 verse Packer posters. Look back if you dont believe.

  23. Hey vikings fans, why do you let tokyomcnasty troll you on every story? Sheesh, it’s what they live for. I mean, it’s not as if there’s anything else going on in cheesethigh land right. Let the yokels have their say.

  24. Definitely good news. It really sucks that we are gonna miss him for a few weeks. If there is any bright spot it’s that we’ll get to see what Shariff Floyd can do. That I’m kind of exited for.

  25. If the league is really concerned about player safety they will ban the cut block and start to fine for it like they do helmet to helmet hits. there is no reason at all for that type of block to be legal no matter which team is using it.

  26. It was a bad play by Looney who isn’t a bad kid. And know-it-all 49er fans who think he sucks and should be cut please think again. He’s a back-up to the best starting OL group in the league and hasn’t had a chance to play . . . for good reason. Shame on him for going low, but I don’t believe there was malice or intent to injure. It was a semi-broken play and Looney didn’t know the flow of the play had shifted directions. I’m glad Williams will be OK.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on your point…

    But 2 additional points:
    1. Why was a starter in until the 3rd quarter; and
    2. When watching the video, he wasn’t looking where he was going or aware of his surroundings. I’m sorry but these are guys playing in the 3rd and 4th quarters that are trying to make the team and make a solid impression on the organization and are going to play hard and hit harder.

  28. Other than A.D. who cares about the Vikes , they got no real chance to win big. As for the 49ers we all see what happens when a team hits back!! see
    Seattle
    St.Louis
    G-men
    oh yeah the Ravens

  29. Looneys hit was deemed legal and OK by Roger Goodell and the NFL. No fine, or suspension, or punishment. according to ESPN

“The Vikings registered a complaint with the league claiming the unpenalized hit was illegal, but on Monday the NFL determined Looney’s hit was legal and did not violate the new rule on peel-back blocks.”

I agree with your additional points. I too don’t understand what he was doing out there in the 3rd quarter. I understand that there are guys that are trying hard to make a team but its unfortunate that this guy thought a cheap shot like that would help him.

  32. Great news. As a Niner fan I was furious when I saw that, no room for that anywhere in the NFL. That’s a bush league move, he sucks anyway, I say cut the fool to send the message.

  33. I don’t care what the league front office says, that was a dirty hit and that lineman should be fined. You could easily end someone’s career the next time.

Now the fact that Williams choose to pursue his career in a silly purple uniform in a hell hole of a stadium is nobody’s business but his own. He seems like a great guy, I hope he gets to play for a Superbowl sometime but that would mean he needs to be traded to pull that off.

Much like if you don’t want to get shot at, don’t join the military or law enforcement….or if you don’t particularly like fire, maybe the fire department is not a good place for you.

Really? Very poor examples of comparisons.
One joins the military to protect and uphold freedom. Law enforcement to protect the people and uphold the laws. Fire Dept. to save lives.

The NFL profession is entertainment. A game for spectators. And at a professional level, with as much money the players make, plays like a low cut on the other side of the field cannot be justified with “Looney was unaware.”

  35. I keep thinking of that scene from full metal jacket where they beat Gomer Pyle with socks filled with bars of soap. The 49ers should totally do that to Looney.

  36. jerrykill…Wisconsin is WAY better than Minnesota…and I live in Minnesota. You people are so pathetic.I used to love it here but once I got to know the people here…..words can’t even describe how much I hate you people

  37. filthymcnasty1 says: Aug 26, 2013 5:52 PM

Kevin Williams career (if you can call it that) will be forever tainted by the StarCaps scandel.

    ———————————————–

You’d have to go back to Reggie White to find a Packer defensive lineman who had a career like or better than Williams’. And the majority of Reggie’s great career, including his best years, was played in another uniform.

Clearly you don’t understand the StarCaps case, which is about par for the course for a Packer fan.

  38. Williams is a “good guy” in today’s NFL. Never heard anything but positive things about him. Role model player and citizen.

It would have sucked if his career was ended by some nobody whose only claim to fame would have been taking out a player who quite frankly is only one small step down from hall of fame caliber.

Sounds like the voice of experience talking when contra talks about creating additional screen names.

  40. i didnt like this block at all. what the…are the niners trying to play like the pete carroll seahawks. This reminded me so much of leroy hills unneccessary dive through manningham’s knee. completely trash. i’m glad Looney is not going make the team anyways.

pete carroll will probably sign Looney though. Fits their mold.

  41. Good news for Williams and the Vikings. Now they can turn their attention to figuring out who replaces Jerome Felton for the first three weeks of the season.

  42. News from the Vikings – Williams could be out up to 6 weeks according to a Startribune report

  43. “There was no word about a time frame for his return. Williams was upset by the hit, which he should have been, but he can now breathe a sign of relief.”

I’ve never heard of anyone breathing a sign of relief before.

  44. From the NFL:

“The NFL agreed with the opinion of San Francisco 49ers guard Joe Looney: His hit on Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams was not a “dirty” play. It wasn’t illegal at all, an NFL spokesman confirmed Tuesday to NFL.com.”
