Packers release Giorgio Tavecchio

Giorgio Tavecchio AP

The Packers made their kicking competition a three-way dance on Monday when they signed Zach Ramirez, but three turned out to be a crowd in Green Bay.

The team announced Monday that Giorgio Tavecchio has been released after spending the offseason and summer competing with incumbent Mason Crosby for the kicking job. Neither of the kickers distinguished themselves with their work in preseason action, but the team obviously decided to go with Crosby’s experience over Tavecchio’s higher conversion rate during practices.

Tavecchio made one of the two field goals he attempted in the first two preseason games, but didn’t attempt a kick in last week’s game against the Seahawks.

Ramirez didn’t play much in his final year at Portland State after injuring a ligament in his leg early in the season, but he was a standout as a junior and Crosby’s not on the steadiest ground after a rough 2012 season. Whoever winds up getting the job for Week One, it’s probably going to continue to be a spot where the Packers examine their options as the year unfolds.

I heard he realized he never really had a fair shot, so he went in and told Ted Thompson to shove it.

Signs are pointing to Crosby probably keeping that job until he starts missing in regular season, which I’d wager will be week 1, LOL

Being Italian, he was not so easy to brain wash so the Packers cut him.

Only in Vikingland can such an outlandish comment be made and better yet, swallowed whole by the Viking fans. But I suspect that’s not all they are swallowing over there in Minneapolis, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Apparently Ted Thompson thinks the Packers are so much better than every other team that there’s no chance that a game might be decided by a field goal. I think they will come to regret their decision to not try to obtain a competent kicker. Or an offensive line.

I believe you are correct in that he never did have a fair shot. GT had a better conversion rate in practice yet Crosby did most of the kicking in games. They are forcefeeding Crosby now in meaningless games in hopes he’ll actually make one when it counts (doubt it). My bet is he doesn’t finish the season as their kicker. First miss from 30-40 yds and his meltdown will start soon after, not to mention the chorus of deserved boos!

Hahaha. Your first team vs. the 49ers first team looked awful yesterday and Ponder continues to show that he’s one of the worst starting QB’s in the league. Also your own O-line didn’t look to great when Justin Smith was flattening guys 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

The Packers best players (that were actually even active for the game) played one series while the Seahawks starters played for 2 and a half quarters. The Seahawks are one of the best teams in the league and the Packers backups vs. their starters were basically deadlocked at 10 to 10.

I’m thinking Vikings fans are a lot more weary about the prospects of their team than Packer fans are.

Really? I have zero personal fouls for the entire Packers o-line through three games.

Didn’t Kalil have two in the first quarter yesterday?

Face it: Your false bravado in regards to an overachieving team (last year) will melt away when your team starts out 1-7…. that 1 win maybe against the Browns.

  32. sandblastermoron says: Aug 26, 2013 4:07 PM

When green bay announces their defense, they should arrive in a clown car and the car will drive out to the 50 yard line and they could all come out the trunk and be greeted by more clowns! That would be cool!

  37. teal379 says: Aug 26, 2013 4:37 PM

GT is still in the mix. GB’s staff knows what they have in him but must get to 75 so they released him.

Chances are they might cut both the new guy and Crosby and call GT back. McCarthy said as much today – they know GT, where he sits, needed to get to 75.

GT is still better than Crosby and there’s a chance it will be GT or Ramirez week 1.

The fact that you still think preseason is a full indicator of regular season performance is laughable. When will you learn?

    2007 Patriots: 0-4 preseason, 16-0 regular season
    2008 Lions: 4-0 preseason, 0-16 regular season

    Play the games, then talk.
