Benched for fumbling, DeMarco Murray says he’s not a fumbler

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett benched running back DeMarco Murray during last week’s preseason game after Murray fumbled. Murray says that if Garrett was trying to get his attention, he didn’t need to.

That’s because, according to Murray, Murray is not a fumbler and knows that holding onto the ball is essential.

I know how important the ball is,” Murray said, via WFAA. “I wouldn’t say it got my attention. I know how important the ball is. You can’t fumble. Since I’ve been carrying the ball since high school, college, even here, I’ve never been a fumbler. I won’t be so I’m not worried about it.”

Murray has only fumbled four times in 386 regular-season touches in his two-year career, so he can make a pretty good case that he really isn’t a fumbler. He says it bugged him that his coach sat him down for a fumble.

“Yeah, I let it marinate a little bit,” Murray said. “It was a little frustrating, you know, to be honest. But once again, I’m just trying to make plays, I’m a competitor. I wasn’t mad at anyone. I wasn’t pouting on the sideline, I wasn’t anything. I was just waiting for my opportunity to get back in the game. Once my number was called, I was ready to play.”

Garrett has made sure Murray knows that if he wants to keep playing, he has to stop fumbling.

Uhh Murray, why would you be mad at anyone for YOUR fumble?

    Incredible……

Every good coach knows this : it doesn’t matter how important to the team a player thinks he is, or even how important he actually is, fumbling cannot be tolerated, and sometimes the only way to get his attention is to sit him down. American Football 101, Mr Murray.

People act like Murray is some pro bowler. He is the third best RB in the division after The Philly RB and Redskins RB.

Murray wasn’t much of a fumbler as an Oklahoma Sooner either.

In 959 career touches in college [handoffs, receptions, kick returns] Murray fumbled the ball exactly EIGHT times.

Only 2 of those 8 fumbles were recovered by the other team.

So in 959 career touches, Murray fumbled the ball away to the other team only twice.

Are the Cowboys the ‘Jets West’, or are the Jets the ‘Cowboys East’ team?

Two peas in a pod, that’s for sure.

Garrett, do your team a favor and bench Romo when he messes up…oh ya , it’s never his fault.

Who is Garrett going to use to replace Murray? Let’s face it, coaches flex their muscles in the preseason but when the game is on the line in the regular season and there are no better options available, DeMarco is not coming out.

Come on Murray, what do you mean your not a fumbler, please don’t be stupid. Signed: Miley Cyrus

He needs to be more worried about his health other than fumbling.

The media has really ran with this story more than it deserves. What is missing from this article as well as many others written about this is that before the fumble he missed a block that led to a sack. I don’t think anyone on this staff was out to punish Murray but more to send a message to the entire team that you have to be focused.

Every year a handful of teams make the playoffs in the new year that did not the last. Don’t like Dallas at all but got them getting in this year.

Doesn’t anyone have a problem with NY Daily News calling people “fatso” to retaliate. Those sports writers and editors should be fired for using such a derogatory word.

Doesn’t he have to stay healthy long enough to get on the field before he can be labelled a fumbler?

Because Alfred Morris had one good year?
PLEASE. He survived because they fooled defenses – that is not going to happen this year.

There is Shady McCoy, and then everyone else is even… and I’m a Giants fan.

Fumbler…schmubler…it doesn’t matter. The Skins will sweep the cowgirls anyway! They will finish 7 and 9 at best.

  23. goindy2006 says: Aug 27, 2013 8:55 AM

    Fumbler…

  24. truthfactory says: Aug 27, 2013 9:07 AM

This is what I dont get- a guy fumbles a couple times throughout the year and he gets pulled so that he is “taught a lesson”. Meanwhile the teams QB often times may throw for 20 INTs that same season and nothing happens. A turnover is a turnover is a turnover…

  25. tombradyswig says: Aug 27, 2013 9:22 AM

not a fumbler, but made of glass!!
    Good pick Jerry, NOT!

  26. bluentheface says: Aug 27, 2013 9:28 AM

The QB also throws for 5000 yards and 30 tds. and is the only chance the Cowboys have to earn a playoff spot.. Don’t worry your not the only clueless fan on this site.

  27. dccowboy says: Aug 27, 2013 10:08 AM

Murray also missed a blocking assignment on a blitz that resulted in a Romo sack before he put the rock on the ground. He was benched because his head wasn’t in the game.

  28. dccowboy says: Aug 27, 2013 10:12 AM

    Truthfactory,

Please let us all know which seasons Romo has thrown 20 INTs.

  32. bo1210 says: Aug 27, 2013 10:40 AM

Yeah, Truthfactory, Romo had 19 INTs in 07 and 12, so those DON’T COUNT! LOL!

yeh Romo has basically the same career interception % as Drew Brees, Ben Roethlesberger & Peyton Manning. What a bunch of bums!
