Bills not likely to carry five quarterbacks on the 53-man roster

With EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb injured, the Bills recently added two more quarterbacks:  Matt Leinart and Thad Lewis.  Bringing their total to five.

In four days, the roster limit drops from 75 to 53.  So will five of those roster spots go to quarterbacks?

Tim Graham of the Buffalo News explained on Tuesday’s PFT Live that the Bills likely will dump one or two of them, with the biggest question being the fate of Kolb.

Kolb’s latest concussion reportedly is career-threatening.  If so, he could be placed on injured reserve.  If Kolb is healthy, he could be cut before earning a $250,000 roster bonus and a $1.65 million base salary.  Alternatively, Kolb could be cut with an injury settlement — along with the $1 million signing bonus he received when he joined the team.

Next is the question of whether Leinart or Lewis will be released.  That one probably will be resolved based on how they perform in Thursday’s preseason finale.

Regardless, the Bill will need to keep one of the two to serve as the backup to Jeff Tuel in Week One, if Manuel isn’t 100 percent.  That means the Bills will have at least four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, unless they remove Kolb from it.

Really a huge messy group there. Vince Young should be on this roster.

    Kolb to IR, Lewis cut.

  5. ingraven says: Aug 27, 2013 7:27 PM

    Kolb OUT.

  6. harrisonhits2 says: Aug 27, 2013 7:35 PM

Or they could put Kolb on the pup for the first 6 weeks if they want to pay the money and take a chance on him.

Leinart will likely go after the last preseason game.

Maybe in 10 years we’ll be watching an NFL Network special about the 11 QB’s drafted while Jeff Tuel wasn’t called.

breaking news….joe ferguson willing to come back and play

You couldn’t have seen this coming, but trading away Tavaras Jackson is biting them in the ass right now.

Manuel, Leinart, Tuel. With Tuel starting the final preseason game but Leinart getting a good look/workout. 3 QB’s and always have Brad Smith for an emergency. Kolb…. season done.

The Bad News Bills are a joke. They have been rebuilding for 10+ years now. I have to say i love seeing all the Bills fans get Bill-eiving again just to be let down by week 5 year after year

lol I jus love how the national media likes to play up the whole Jeff Tuel starting in week 1. You do realize EJ was running around on Sunday and told Marrone he was ready to play. Marrone insists on bringing him back slowly. He’ll be throwing in the next few days and be good to go week 1.

bluntastic, judging by reply or name u probably don’t make more than $7 an hour legally. The joke isn’t on bills fans.

Word has it that Marrone is a highly calculating individual and he is attempting to strategically control the media. My money is on EJ starting and Tuel being a smoke screen.

OK here it comes, “if you have 5 QBs then it means you don’t have 1 QB”.

  16. mrbigass says: Aug 27, 2013 9:07 PM

No dog in this fight but seriously I can’t see any team lamenting the fact that Jackson is not on their roster………

    Thank you for that insight.

  18. fordmandalay says: Aug 27, 2013 9:15 PM

I did the math; all those guys together only add up to 1 3/4 QBs, not 5.

  19. tjacks7 says: Aug 27, 2013 9:43 PM

Wow, really? Color me surprised! How many second basemen are they going to carry?

  20. frencha2384 says: Aug 27, 2013 9:45 PM

Wizwix is right he magically went from saying Manuel will start once healthy which he said would be week one to naming rule the week 1 starter. I’d bet everything I own that come week 1 Manuel is under center

I love me an underdog, so I’m rooting for Jeff Tuel to get the start Week 1 and see what he does with the opportunity of a lifetime!

    I should certainly hope not.

Kolb has shown nothing accept the ability to get injured. Time to move on…

  24. rajbais says: Aug 27, 2013 11:04 PM

Just put Kolb on PUP or IR.

He’s done. After the mat mishap I personally felt that he should’ve retired.

After 2013 I think he’s done with football.

He’s better than the QBs in Oakland, Minnesota, but getting hurt all the time is too self-inflicting. He’s got to end the career.

  25. bengalguy says: Aug 27, 2013 11:12 PM

You know what they say….if you have 5 QB’s, you don’t have any!

  26. harvestern says: Aug 27, 2013 11:40 PM

@harrisonhits2 Kolb is ineligible for the PUP list because he participated in not only training camp practices, but also actual pre-seaon games. You have to miss all practies and games to be eligible. Only options other than have him take up a roster spot is IR or an injury settlement unless he is healthy. I’d prefer the latter.

Wizwix is one of those bills fans that keep buying the hope the bills sell every year

Or they could put Kolb on the pup for the first 6 weeks if they want to pay the money and take a chance on him.

No, they can’t. To be eligible for reserve/PUP, you have to have been on the “other” PUP for the entire training camp. You can’t have been active at any time and participated in full practices or any preseason games. You don’t get to reserve/PUP guys who get hurt in practice or preseason games.
