Jerry Jones: Tony Romo is a creative offensive mind like Sean Payton

Tony Romo, Jerry Jones AP

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said all offseason that he wants quarterback Tony Romo to get more involved in the offensive game planning and play calling this year. Now Jones is comparing Romo’s understanding of offensive football with one of the brightest offensive minds in the game.

Jones said on KRLD radio in Dallas that former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells used to tell him that he loved Romo’s football intelligence, and Jones said Romo and Saints coach Sean Payton are similar in that respect.

“Bill knows Tony well and he has always had a real appreciation for Romo’s approach and his intellect relative to play calling relative to seeing and understanding the game,” Jones said, via ESPNDallas.com. “He’s unique in that way. In a way, Tony has some of the kind of skills you might see in a Sean Payton.”

Jones said Parcells told him that the idea to have Romo get more involved in running the offense is a good one.

“It is also just the flair for being able to see it and being creative out there,” Jones said. “In visiting with Bill, he thought it was something we really ought to take advantage of is Tony’s ability to see the field, call the plays and make more decisions out there.”

Jones sounds excited about giving Romo more control of the offense.

“Tony is going to be more involved in the making of the game plan and the calling of the plays than he’s been in the past in his career, and he’ll be significantly more involved. That’s a change,” Jones said.

Cowboys have to hope that’s a change for the better, and the Cowboys’ offense looks more like Sean Payton’s New Orleans offense.

Romo’s job is to execute the plan.

Is a double “relative” like a double “negative” which means Romo has a bad offensive mind? If so, that would make more sense.

Seriously now this is becoming worrisome. Goodell, please appeal to the family, fellow owners, PETA, etc. to stage a mental health intervention for Jerry.
His delusional thinking has reached a level that is now just too sad to ignore.
Poor pathetic Cowboy fans will never sniff another Super Bowl until this freak is gone

  20. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Aug 27, 2013 4:09 PM

just like when he hired him, jerry the non-football man is trying to use parcells the football man as cover for his own insecurity.

but remember that jerry and bill couldn’t co-exist because jerry wouldn’t let the football man do his job and brought in TO over parcells objections.

and if jerry was smart, he’d have kept sean payton and not jason garrett. except of course, for the fact that payton wouldn’t let jerry run the show either.

  21. whatnojets says: Aug 27, 2013 4:10 PM

  24. steaderic says: Aug 27, 2013 4:14 PM

I’ll say it right here and right now, there’s no Sean Payton without Drew Brees.

  25. dirtydrynn27 says: Aug 27, 2013 4:15 PM

  28. seahawks4alltime says: Aug 27, 2013 4:17 PM

Tony Romo sure does know how to play OFFENSIVE football.

Highest rated QB in the 4th quarter? Okay, well when you want to get selective about stats we can make all sorts of arguments.

  29. Iknoweverything says: Aug 27, 2013 4:18 PM

Jerry Jones has 3 Lombardis because of JIMMY JOHNSON.

Do not be so delusional to think that Jerry has ANY credit

  30. drbrown7451 says: Aug 27, 2013 4:19 PM

It does not make any difference how good Romo’s ratings are, what his stats are, nor what Jerruh / Parcells / Harry Potter / Lassie, etc. think of his alleged football mind. Playoff wins, Super Bowl wins – that’s what counts. Romo doesn’t have them and he’s not going to get them. It’s not hate. It’s facts.

  31. endzone says: Aug 27, 2013 4:21 PM

  34. romo4life says: Aug 27, 2013 4:25 PM

    Hate hate hate….

Tony will lead the cowboys to 1st in the NFC East….super bowl bound? Probably not…but he and Dez have looked great this preseason.

There is reason for optimism in Dallas!!

Keep hating, haters. Those who actually know football are laughing at you.

  36. oldirtyman says: Aug 27, 2013 4:30 PM

Jerry Jones is jealous of the Steelers franchise and the six rings they have won, and jealous of the Dolphins undefeated season. Cowboys will always be inferior to the Steelers and Dolphins.

  37. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Aug 27, 2013 4:31 PM

parcells made nice for the hof process. believe me, jerry’s meddling ran him out of town.

and as to hate, i don’t hate jerry jones, he’s the main reason dallas hasn’t won anything since jimmy johnson’s goldmine of talent retired.

the sum of the parts of jerry’s teams will always be greater than the team he fields because he has taken the control of the team away from the coach.

and those must be old announcers, as the boys ain’t beat nobody lately…………….

p.s. 4th quarter qb stats? something for losers to ponder.

  41. kanishj says: Aug 27, 2013 4:36 PM

That Montana guy who played for the 49ers probably has worse stats than Romo. Therefore Romo is better than Montana.

Actually, we’re laughing at YOU. We all know the average Cowboys fan isn’t actually a ‘fan’ at all and therefore can’t even point out Dallas on a map, let alone know anything about football. And no, I’m not talking about you folks from Texas that actually earned the right to cheer for your team. Sean Peyton took a team that had traded its entire draft away for a guy who took off to smoke weed in Australia to the superbowl and a win.

Tony Romo takes what some say is a superbowl caliber teams and takes it to 8-8 seasons and chokes in the playoffs.

After all, this is the same moron who once said that “Any one of 500 coaches could have won those super bowls” when rebuffing reporters suggestions that Jimmy Johnson was the real architect behind the Cowboys super bowl wins in the early 90′s. He also offered this gem to the media when reporting what he had recently told mediocre quarterback Quincy Carter. “You’re so close to getting Donovan McNabb money.” Not long afterward, Carter was released for using drugs.

  92. boyshole25 says: Aug 28, 2013 5:51 AM

If Dallas ever gets an offensive line that is able to provide the time and protection a quarterback needs to be successful people would change their minds about Romo.

When he has time (rarely) he is great. When the offensive line sucks (most of the time) it is a struggle for any quarterback to perform well.

  95. steaderic says: Aug 28, 2013 12:24 PM
