Torrey Smith says he’s more than a deep threat for the Ravens

Smith AP

At a time when the Ravens seem to be scrambling to find a reliable replacement for Anquan Boldin’s ability to run the various underneath routes and catch pretty much anything thrown his way, it could be that their best option for that role (especially with Dennis Pitta out indefinitely) is their only clear No. 1 receiver on the depth chart.

Appearing on Monday’s PFT Live, Torrey Smith said he’s more than just a deep threat.  Smith pointed out that he can effectively run every route on the passing tree; with Jacoby Jones having the speed to stretch the field (just ask the Broncos), maybe Smith can be the guy to grow into the Boldin-type role.

Smith didn’t make that point specifically.  And it may not be anything the Ravens or Smith will need to even articulate.  As Smith enters his third NFL season, the year when plenty of good receivers find a way to become great, maybe all the apparent fretting over replacing Boldin has become cover for the fact that Smith is poised to make a move to the upper echelon of NFL receivers.

He ripped Denver a new one. Steelers are next. That weak secondary is going to wish it called in sick.

Torrey Smith will be a stud in fantasy football this year. With that said, I hate the Ravens and hope they lose every game, just because the people of Baltimore are so hateful to the colts for moving to Indianapolis. Get over it, you got your team now, hell, they have even won a couple of SuperBowls, move on. If your a complete and utter idiot, aka Jets fan, hit the thumbs down button.

  14. stabbymike says: Aug 27, 2013 9:15 AM

i hate how people undervalue smith. hes a stud receiver. people will realize how much of a steal he was in the second round. unbelievable jon baldwin was selected ahead of him.

  15. lovefootball4life says: Aug 27, 2013 9:22 AM

All the elements necessary for him to be great are there (his skill, QB, o-line to give the time, running game). However, unless there is someone else defenses also game plan for in obvious passing situations they will roll coverage his way. Jacoby needs to be there to stretch the field reliably and Stokley needs to pick up the underneath routes reliably.

@ColtsWin, Baltimore has moved on a long time ago. I haven’t heard that from anyone. Have you talked to anyone from Baltimore in the last 15 years?

  16. lovefootball4life says: Aug 27, 2013 9:26 AM

““Just ask the Broncos” lol. Champ Bailey is the Super Bowl MVP for the Ravens”

Champ was watching it from his couch. But others said it was Rahim Moore? or was it the refs? or was it Boldin? Oh yeah, that’s right, it was Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco.

  17. jmblosser82 says: Aug 27, 2013 9:41 AM

Rice and Pierce will gave bigger loads this year, good defensive teams can shut down Flacco. Bengals should win the division with the ravens and steelers scrapping for second.

  18. steelersownu says: Aug 27, 2013 9:49 AM

The REAL Super Bowl MVP for the Rats should have been Jimmy Smith ……for getting away with mugging Crabtree on that 4th and goal play with the official standing right there afraid to throw a flag……49er’s GOT ROBBED

So now the paper champs get ready to start a new season with a target on their backs……should be fun to watch them struggle

  19. steelersownu says: Aug 27, 2013 9:53 AM

Smith is a one trick pony……just average at best

Looking foward to it. Hope you don’t mind that we’re bringing the two players that actually made your team somewhat competitive last year.

Good point. Smith was fantastic in that game. I guess you miss the days when the refs used to hand over the SB to the lesser team. Does the name Bill Leavey ring a bell? SB XL? Steelers v. Seahawks? Hellooooo?

  22. steelersownu says: Aug 27, 2013 10:34 AM

Sorry Joethefako…….the Rats were getting their asses handed to them in the 2nd half of the Super Bowl by the 49er’s and without that ‘gift’ from the refs at a crucial point in the game your sorry team would have gone down in history as the first team to give up a large lead and lose……and trying to justify the Ravens thievery by bringing up the Steelers SB were offensive PI was called correctly for an illegal push off isn’t going to change the fact that the Rats stole that game from the 49er’s……..they had a rookie QB and he took it to the Ravens in the 2nd half and derserved a fair shot at winning….stop trying to act like it didn’t happen

  23. ravensnowman says: Aug 27, 2013 10:58 AM

@Steelersownu Kaepernick wasn’t a rookie, it was his second year. and seeing as the 49er’s were never leading we didn’t steel it. also they only gained momentum after the light failure, without that, we would have embarrassed them.

  24. scoobies05 says: Aug 27, 2013 11:05 AM

hey steelersownu. you talk about the 2nd half….did you catch the first half or does that not matter in your analysis.? and the last time yinz made the playoffs…tebow. your last sb win…leavey. and bigben….how about torrey torching you all not once but twice at the ketchup bottle when he was a rookie.
some of you all make me left…so bitter…so irrelevant

  27. jmblosser82 says: Aug 27, 2013 11:25 AM

The ravens had the same amount of time during the blackout, they slacked off cause they thought the game was out of reach. Jones or Boldin should have been the MVP not Flacco. That offense will struggle this year, and when it does how long before Baltimore turns on Flacco and how long will it take broadcasters to go back to saying how horrid he looks. New season, only champs for 19 more weeks, since I foresee missed playoffs for them.

  28. udontknowjaq says: Aug 27, 2013 11:28 AM

really splitting hairs there eh timmy? I didn’t realize the call i superbowl XL was undoubtedly correct and completely above reproach (oh wait, every call in the steelers favor falls under that category doesn’t it?) If you really want to cry about Crabtree then you also have to acknowledge the no call on the drive before that when torrey smith was dragged to the ground before the ball got there. Bottom line is the niners did get their shot after that unprecedented blackout, but they got blown out too badly in the first half to recover. Stop making excuses for them, they lost! Oh, and did you realize Kaepernick was in his sophmore season??? At least get your facts straight before you troll…

  30. steelersownu says: Aug 27, 2013 12:12 PM

I don’t care what you purple fans say……to not call blatant defensive holding and pass interference in the Super Bowl on a game winning drive is a major fuk up by the NFL officials …..of course they don’t want to talk about it but Jim Harbaugh has every right to be pissed……they call that penalty and there is an 80% chance that the 49er’s win that game – could just imagine you whiny Rat fans screaming if the show was on the other foot

  31. lovefootball4life says: Aug 27, 2013 12:13 PM

jmb, this is also what I’ve been trying to tell steelersownu since that uber troll popped up yesterday. You can’t argue “should have” or “if”. You are arguing something that didn’t happen. It did happen. Ravens won. Joe had a good game to cap a great post season. He got the MVP. Nothing changes that.

Now for this year. I predict he will throw just under 4k yards, around 25 TDs and 10 picks. Not Brees/Rodgers/Manning/Brady numbers but that’s because our RBs may just run over 1k yards each. All I want from Flacco this year is consistency and leadership. Smith will have a good year but he’s not going to be in the Megatron/Bryant/A.Johnson/Julio Jones category of receivers either.

  32. scoobies05 says: Aug 27, 2013 12:34 PM

bottom line is the niners had numerous chances to win and didnt. to say it came down to one play is absurd. the ravens won and all the crying and whining by steeler fans who had to watch since their team didnt even qualify wont change it. there was a first half in that game and sf got destroyed. and steeler fans…bill leavey…so calm your entitled selves down

  33. scoobies05 says: Aug 27, 2013 12:52 PM

coltswin..no one but the older generation cares about the colts leaving at this point. the only thing baltimore is upset about at this point is the stupidity of the nfl in allowing the irsay family to take the history. personally, i like the colts and was rooting for them last year due to the pagano story and ravens connection
and seriously steeler fan…you can bring up what you think is a bad call but no one else can….thats why fans like you are a joke. the niners had plenty of chances and didnt get it done. so take your what ifs and go root for your non playoff team

  34. bighurt228 says: Aug 27, 2013 12:59 PM

I am NOT a 49er fan, and pretty much was rooting for them in the Super Bowl, due to my lack of respect for the ratbirds. I had really no dog in the fight. But it was a shame how that game was handed to the ratbirds, when the momentum shifted over to the 49ers, while making a huge comeback. The refs, who I think mostly SUCK, we’re afraid to throw the flag on the last play when Crabtree was mugged making his break. It’s a shame when they determine the outcome of a game with their often bad calls. All add up really to paper champs. Smith is a number 3 receiver mostly, possibly at times a 2, at best. With bolden gone his ass will be covered, and with no other threat, the ratbirds will not even win their division this year. With flunkos huge salary cap numbers look for the ratbirds to be cellar dwellers for a few years.!!

  35. scoobies05 says: Aug 27, 2013 1:23 PM

so you look at the last play which in your opinion was a non call yet choose to ignore all the plays earlier on both sides that werent called? the refs for the most part let both teams play. and to call torrey at best a 3 and sometimes a 2 shows that you cant speak impartially. you dont like the ravens so all their players suck. torrey is good not great but getting better and flacco just put up one of the all time great playoff runs ever.

  36. Joemontanaflacco says: Aug 27, 2013 1:25 PM

How impotent and powerless is a fan that does nothing but whine and gripe about flags that were never thrown? Steelers’ fans, get your thumbs out of your mouths and act like the men you root for. You’re an embarassment to the franchise with your sissy yellow towels, Troy Polamalu wigs, and Big Ben underwear. That stink river stadium of yours is nothing but one giant bassinet.

  37. scoobies05 says: Aug 27, 2013 1:49 PM

oh…fyi. flacco has low cap numbers for the next 3 years….so try another incorrect arguement

  38. jmblosser82 says: Aug 27, 2013 2:15 PM

Smith isn’t a #1 yet but is awful close, but after that there isn’t a whole lot. The most complete afcn team is the bengals. Flacon was great during the playoffs last year but how many raven fans honestly believe he is worth that contract, without Boldin and Pitta we will see. That defense will inflate that win/loss record just like they did Flaccos first few years.

  39. lovefootball4life says: Aug 27, 2013 2:17 PM

Nice one jmf. Arguing about last years super bowl is crazy. Its over. Arguing that one play changes the outcome is insane. Steeler fans talking about the past is just another day on PFT.

These articles are hilarious!. Listening to jmb, bighurt,& steelersownu, coltswin, etc. Let me straighten out a few myths that some opposing fans may not know.
M&T Bank stadium is not a “rundown stadium” It’s only 15 years old and just had 35 mil. MORE in upgrades. Rated top 5 in “NFL Experience”.
No one else but Joe Flacco should have been SB MVP. He received over 60% of the vote. ( fans & media) The rest was split between Boldin & Jones.
Raven fans do NOT hate Indy. Just remember though, we in Baltimore, named your team.

So get over yourselves……the Ravens just aren’t that good and they were clearly playing way beyond their usual abilities…which is evident by them losing 4 of their last 5 in the Regular season

Scoobs, Ben had a great defense that made up for his inexperience, but after his second season look at his numbers, his season stats are very close to that of Flaccos and that’s with missing games every season. The last 2-3 years ben gas had no run game to help him and the last time they had a decent run game was a year or two after Bettis retired.
Does Ben throw pick sixes? He sure does. Dies he get sacked more then he should by holding onto the ball? Yes, but more big plays happen as the result of him extended the play. Raven nation will find out just how elite Joe is without pitta and Boldin.

jm…fair analysis. my question has ben ever had a playoff run close to what joe just did. and regarding pitta and boldin, they will be missed. but the experts said we were done when heap and mason left, so next man up. and you all people should realize that a qb isnt always measured by stats. the ravens under flacco and cameron were never a team that relied on gaudy offense…but they won. and when cam left the training wheels came off and joe became the qb we knew he could be. and if boldin were so great why did no one offer a lousy 5th round pick for him. better to let him go a year too soon and his money helped us get spears canty and dumervil

  57. rottenbellybutton says: Aug 27, 2013 6:49 PM

Do the steelers have a threat at WR? Look at their depth chart, it’s quite comical. Yinz will desperately miss Wallace even though he has “stone hands” and dropped a whopping 6 passes last season. You homers seem to forget he was still your leading receiver, but don’t worry Brown will miraculously turn into a legit #1. This offense will be laughable.
