Torrey Smith says he’s more than a deep threat for the Ravens

Smith

At a time when the Ravens seem to be scrambling to find a reliable replacement for Anquan Boldin’s ability to run the various underneath routes and catch pretty much anything thrown his way, it could be that their best option for that role (especially with Dennis Pitta out indefinitely) is their only clear No. 1 receiver on the depth chart.

Appearing on Monday’s PFT Live, Torrey Smith said he’s more than just a deep threat. Smith pointed out that he can effectively run every route on the passing tree; with Jacoby Jones having the speed to stretch the field (just ask the Broncos), maybe Smith can be the guy to grow into the Boldin-type role.

Smith didn’t make that point specifically. And it may not be anything the Ravens or Smith will need to even articulate. As Smith enters his third NFL season, the year when plenty of good receivers find a way to become great, maybe all the apparent fretting over replacing Boldin has become cover for the fact that Smith is poised to make a move to the upper echelon of NFL receivers.
