Leslie Frazier tells Jerome Felton not to let suspension hold him back

More than a year passed between Vikings fullback Jerome Felton’s arrest for driving drunk and the NFL’s decision to suspend him for the first three games of the 2013 season, a period that gave the team plenty of time to get to know him.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Tuesday that he is focused on what he learned about Felton, who had only recently joined the team before his arrest, in the wake of the suspension. He had nothing but positive things to say about Felton and said that he was emphasizing the positives in his own conversations with the fullback.

“We had him only a few weeks when that incident occurred,” Frazier said, via Bob Sansevere of the Pioneer Press. “We hadn’t had a chance to introduce him to our culture and how we do things. We’ve seen a lot of growth. That’s encouraging. I just tried to get him not to be as down and depressed as he was when we got the news and just maintain the level of consistency he has shown over the past few months: Don’t let this set you back.”

The span between the arrest and the suspension saw Felton make the Pro Bowl for his work clearing paths for Adrian Peterson, who averaged more than two yards per carry more when Felton was in the game last season. It also saw him get a three-year contract from Minnesota that he might not have secured if he had been suspended last year. None of that makes it any easier to lose him for three games, but it ensures he’ll move right back into his old role when his suspension comes to an end.

    filthy, you really should do your homework before you open your mouth

    Total MN DUI arrests in 2011: 24543

    Nice to see Frazier staying on the up side about this. Losing Felton will hurt though, especially at Chicago in week 2.

    My guess is that Rhett Ellison gets the call at FB the first three games. Rookie Zac Line looks like he could stick on the roster or the practice squad, but he was a feature back in college, and it might be asking a bit too much to have him transition to a blocker with the first team before opening day.

    Did someone from Wisconsin just accuse Minnesota of having a culture of drunkenness? It’s a little early for paint thinner, isn’t it?

    filthy there’s nothing else to do in Wisconsin but drink. Step out of your basement and take a look around your own state once in a while. Ever been to Superior, WI?

    @pillowporkers

    Why are you ripping on Superior? There are some awesome little family-owned bars up there!

    @land of sky blue water:

    “some” bars? That’s a little bit of an understatement. But your right, even though it may be worse than the average Wisconsin town, it’s not that much worse I’ll concede.

    Rhett Ellison will fill in nicely for Felton during his suspension. He was actually rated higher in his 200+ snaps as a FB last year than Felton.

    Superior is the cleaner version of Duluth what about it?

    Now getting back to the topic. Who leads between the two teams or the division in suspensions?

    It is too bad that the positive culture this team has wasn’t instilled before he did this. He got busted only 3 weeks after signing the contract.

    The Vikings are really a solid group of citizens for the most part. Even Cook has grown up a lot. This really is a great organization they have going. Everything is very positive and they seem to work hard.

    Frazier has his mentality instilled. Just a matter of, you know, winning games.

    I have and I’ve also been to Wisconsin in which I saw many more people drinking. What’s your point?
