Report: Graham Harrell agrees to contract with Jets

Graham Harrell AP

With uncertainty surrounding the health of Mark Sanchez and the readiness of Geno Smith, the New York Jets have added another quarterback to their roster.

According to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com, the Jets have agreed to terms on a contract with former Green Bay Packers quarterback Graham Harrell. He’s expected to report to the team on Wednesday.

The Jets also planned on taking a look at John Beck this week but ultimately decided to go with Harrell to add to their shaky signal-caller situation. Harrell will join Sanchez, Smith, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms as quarterbacks on the Jets’ roster.

Harrell was released by the Packers this week after being beat out by Vince Young for the backup job to Aaron Rodgers. Harrell was 23 for 42 (55-percent) for 169 yards and an interception in three preseason games with the Packers this year. He’s appeared in just four regular season games, all in 2012, with just four attempted passes.

The sad part is I’m not sure if he’ll be competing for a starting spot or not.

Geno Smith didn’t look so saavy going against an NFL defense. He was used to crushing Marshall, James Madison and Baylor’s defense from last year, but this is the big leagues. Sanchez rode his defense to 2 AFC title games, but wasn’t ever an elite Quarterback other than in HS. Now Graham Harrell who rode the Michael Crabtree horse at Texas Tech, then got cut by the CFL (Roughriders) in less than 1 year. How the heck is he still bouncing around teams?

The Jets look disgusting this year, in my personal opinion they are the worst team in the NFL.

    lol.

  8. eatitfanboy says: Aug 28, 2013 12:39 AM

    I don’t get it.

Even with Sanchez and Smith unavailable, the Jets still had two QBs on their roster that are better than Harrell. And one or both of those two are probably going to be ready by the opener.

He has no shot of making this roster, as bad as it is. If this is the best offer he got, I think we can safely assume we have seen the last of Graham Harrell in the NFL.

  9. skoobyfl says: Aug 28, 2013 12:43 AM

this is hilarious! I’m a huge packer fan and was overjoyed when gb cut this bum after 3 years of not learning anything (couldn’t even take a simple snap to hand off the ball to Benson without fumbling in a regular season game). Ugh.

Jets fans make fun off their own organization for making transactions just like this. I understand their dilemma now. it’s incredible. I’m telling you, Jamarcus Russel has far more upside than Graham.
Good luck JETS and I hope for your sake his services are never needed.

Beg Brett Favre out of retirement!

  30. ithinkipeedmyself says: Aug 28, 2013 1:56 AM

Wow. Solid pickup. Obviously far superior to McElroy and Simms. Nathan Enderle and Ryan Katz are available, too. Geniuses.

  32. madamz17 says: Aug 28, 2013 2:03 AM

  33. enzo1030 says: Aug 28, 2013 2:03 AM

McElroy is still hurt, this is just a body to use for Thursday so Geno/Simms don’t have to play the whole game.

    He’ll be cut Friday.

  34. thehelmutt says: Aug 28, 2013 2:23 AM

Too bad the Viking weren’t able to pick him up.

  35. overweightman says: Aug 28, 2013 2:44 AM

  36. mountaindont says: Aug 28, 2013 2:46 AM

Nice enough guy but didnt seem to show enough improvement in the few seasons he was in Green Bay.

  37. callahan9119 says: Aug 28, 2013 2:52 AM

I suppose it doesn’t matter between these three. Smith doesn’t seem ready for the job.

Why not trade for a guy like Matt Hasselbeck who could be a caretaker. He’s old, but he could at least be a guy that won’t bury you

  38. jagwires says: Aug 28, 2013 3:13 AM

My fantasy defense strategy this year? Pick the team going against the Jets or Raidas.

God I hope they start Harrell. I’ll LOL so hard at the sight of Geno pouting in Sanchez’s lap during the game.

  39. aaroncurryisbust says: Aug 28, 2013 3:37 AM

They should bring back Vinny Testaverde or Drew Bledsoe. Hell, Donovan McNabb and Jeff Garcia would love some work.

  40. Iain says: Aug 28, 2013 3:40 AM

This has more to do with McElroy being hurt than anything else.

  42. chi01town says: Aug 28, 2013 4:11 AM

packers need to keep they garbage
in that little raggady town. Green bay is the worse lie the NFL has ever told. frozen tundra.. more like
frozen clay. the real truth is there is NOTHING IN GREEN BAY but that little raggady football stadium selling raw bratz and nacho’s.

  43. richdaddy1231 says: Aug 28, 2013 4:14 AM

He may be the best starter they got

  44. goodwilljoe says: Aug 28, 2013 4:25 AM

Give McElroy a try. He’s the only QB on the Jet’s roster that has looked decent so far.

  47. sunzu717 says: Aug 28, 2013 5:29 AM

Now it’s a full blown circus lol. Just play Geno all year and develop the kid, then trade Samchise for a 6th rounder next year and call it a day. They look so desperate with all these other attempts, it’s not like they were destined to win this year anyway.

  48. RexCanCoach says: Aug 28, 2013 5:47 AM

Only on the Jets does the term “camp body” describe their QB’s.

Personally, I want to see more of Simms on Thursday, this kid may be ready for the job in my opinion.

  49. lrjets says: Aug 28, 2013 6:02 AM

Five Quarterbacks 11 days before Opening Day???

I’d use McElroy or give Simms a chance. Probably has the strongest arm under the tent.

Let Cromartie play QB, go 0-16, get the #1 DP.

    Keep it simple.

  50. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Aug 28, 2013 6:03 AM

    LOL

  52. gsomatt says: Aug 28, 2013 6:15 AM

Harrell is a serviceable back up. But he had three years to get the GB offense down and didn’t.

I wish him well but if he’s thrust into a starting roll with 2 weeks t0o learn the offense… well the Jets can look forward to a high draft pick in 2014.

  53. cobraiv says: Aug 28, 2013 6:38 AM

Wow! The Jets now have more quaterbacks then they do receivers.

  54. p31squared says: Aug 28, 2013 6:38 AM

They are also reportedly looking at Beck the musician, Glenn Beck, Graham Elliott, Graham Nash, a Teddy Graham, Teddy Ruxpin, Ted from the movie and the remains of Theodore Roosevelt.

  55. 15starr says: Aug 28, 2013 6:39 AM

He’s a great guy.. Hasn’t shown anything on the football field.

  56. mrbigass says: Aug 28, 2013 6:57 AM

I’m beginning to understand why really elite NFL QB’s make 20 mil a year like a Brady or Manning.

Think about it. Of the entire world’s population or just the USA at over 300 million you need to find 32 guys that are really good at that job. Just 32.

But even with that large a pool to select from the dropoff from the very best to the worst is pretty substantial.

What does all this mean?……..I have no idea……..

  57. clowntown1 says: Aug 28, 2013 7:04 AM

as a Packers fan I can with certainty that Harrell is a great guy and a horrible football player. Just flat out, used-toilet paper bad.

Bad things just happen when he is on the field. Last year he came in for one play when Rodgers got poked in the eye against the Saints…Packers had the ball first and goal on the 2…Harrell could not execute a simple hand off, fumbled and the Saints recovered.

He is just that kind of guy….everything he touches on the field turns to garbage. Since the Jets are already garbage, maybe there will be a double negative type thing that happens here and two negatives will turn into a positive. Jets are so desperate that is prob why they signed him…hoping maybe math can save them.

  58. fahmundamahbalsaq says: Aug 28, 2013 7:08 AM

Theres no need to fear, Graham Harrell is here!

I can hear that collective sigh of relief from Jet fans. Rex’s job is now safe and the Jets will make the playoffs this year. Oh wait, Harrell was beat out by Vince Young. Never mind!

  59. doall24 says: Aug 28, 2013 7:10 AM

you couldn’t make this stuff up with the jets. LOL.

  60. dgtalmn says: Aug 28, 2013 7:20 AM

Good for Harrell, welcome to crazy town

  61. undefeateddolphins72 says: Aug 28, 2013 7:20 AM

Harrell + Sanchez + Smith + Greg McElroy + Matt Simms = 25% of the talent of Ryan Tannehill

  62. bklyntay says: Aug 28, 2013 7:23 AM

I would read to much into this they only have two healthy qb’s (simms smith) they aren’t gonna play smith so they need someone to share the snaps with simms because mcelroy is still hurt. Harrell will be cut after the preseason.

  63. beerbratscheese says: Aug 28, 2013 7:28 AM

As a Packers fan, I have no ill will for Graham Graham Harrell whatsoever. He was a model teammate and a good guy. I hope he does well in NY.

  64. richkotitte says: Aug 28, 2013 7:31 AM

The Jets and Jags may have more QB’s on their opening day rosters than LB’s!

It’s what happens when you haven’t yet found
    ‘the guy’.

  65. firestarter0728 says: Aug 28, 2013 7:37 AM

Immediately, he becomes the best QB on the Jets roster. As a Packers fan I’m happy to see him get another shot.

  68. virusgvr says: Aug 28, 2013 7:45 AM

This just proves how much of a mess the Jets are in. A garbage QB to the Packers this season and 17 minutes later the Jets can’t wait to blow their wad and get this guy on the team ASAP. I have to believe that there will be a few better QB’s that will be release this week following the cuts?

  69. ctiggs says: Aug 28, 2013 7:50 AM

Graham seems like a good guy but after 3 years in GB he just couldn’t put it together. I don’t see him faring any better in the quarterback factory that is the Jets.

  72. whatjusthapped says: Aug 28, 2013 7:57 AM

It seems that whenever the Jets face a critical decision for their franchise, they make the wrong choice. I don’t know much about John Beck but what I can tell you is that Graham Harrell sucks, I mean worse that Christian Ponder suckage if that is even possible.

Hopefully, he never sees the field in the regular season.

  73. pl4tinum514 says: Aug 28, 2013 8:01 AM

What is wrong with the Jets? Are they seriously trying to collect the 4 worst QBs in the NFL? Harrell is atrocious!

  74. thechronicjoker says: Aug 28, 2013 8:01 AM

Good thing you got your starting quarterback, the last week of preseason. Harrell will be your starter.

  75. aa1829 says: Aug 28, 2013 8:05 AM

  77. hodag54501 says: Aug 28, 2013 8:13 AM

Harrell’s a good guy, but when given the opportunity to run with the number one offense he fell flat. That was in a QB-friendly offense in Green Bay. Sorry Jets fans, he ain’t Brett Favre in terms of ability. Basically he was beaten out of a roster spot by a 7th round draft pick(B.J. Coleman) and a guy who was out of football last year(Vince Young).

  78. 7ransponder says: Aug 28, 2013 8:16 AM

It’s a shame that the best QB on this team will get overlooked for another year. Greg McElroy, all he does is win games. He may not be the strong armed, franchise type QB, but he’s a mistake free game manager. Just not enough intelligence in the Jets organization to see that.

  94. seanmmartin says: Aug 28, 2013 9:09 AM

Get the signing. He’s smart, was heralded in college, and played/learned behind Rodgers. Plus, the only way to beat the Pats is by air. Shame they don’t have receivers.

  95. twobluegills says: Aug 28, 2013 9:27 AM

  98. dwarftosser says: Aug 28, 2013 9:54 AM

Harrell didn’t develop the way we wanted him to in Green Bay, but he’s still got talent and he certainly won’t make any worse decisions than Sanchez. Seems like a good pickup to me.

  99. thirdistheworrd says: Aug 28, 2013 10:37 AM

  100. gobuccs1280 says: Aug 28, 2013 10:39 AM

They should have tried to inquire about Tim Tebow, the Pats might not keep him by the time they hit 53. Plus aren’t the Jets already footing the bill. The hoodie smiles again.

  101. nananatman says: Aug 28, 2013 11:06 AM
